This is just a venting post but I am so frustrated right now. Ove a year and a half ago I got the okay from my boss in writing to take a longer than normal vacation. Our max time off is usually two week off at a time.

Before booking my B2B Med and transatlantic I discussed it with her and got approval. Now with it coming up in 126 day I am being told I might not get the time off. They won't know until 60 days out or so. I have explained to them about the cancelation policy etc. but no change in their time line.

I am someone who likes to plan hence the discussing the time off with the boss, early booking to get the room I wanted , researching the stops planning excursions etc. Now because others don't plan ahead I may get denied vacation.

Chances are with a little work I can get a coworker to help cover some of it and will go but I HATE uncertainty.

Rant over. Thanks for reading

Short term solution --> Travel insurance

Long Term solution --> start updating your resume.

Likewise, I hope everything works out.

However, for the replies mentioning trip insurance...it seems like all of the policies I’ve seen cover “emergencies” and wouldn’t cover circumstances described by the OP. Am I looking for trip insurance in the wrong place?

I would say yes you are. I always get travel insurance that includes coverage for work reasons - specifically if your previously approved vacation time is canceled/denied then it is covered.

A number of years ago I was working for the state in a job where I had to examine financial records of various state agencies. We had a family vacation planner for about a year and I was getting a little nervous about the assignment I was on being completed before we left. I had called into the office to request a specialist to come out to the site to conduct a certain required part of the review but the supervisors never sent him out. So now it is about 3 weeks until my vacation and the supervisor comes out the the site to see how things were going. While he was there I asked about the specialist and mumbled some nonsense and went to lunch. When he came back he said to me "About your vacation, if you are done you can go." Fast forward three weeks and a specialist never showed up, needless to say we had not finished the review. I went into the main office and stopped by the supervisor's desk. I asked "So you said about my vacation if I was done I can go?" He replied "Yes!" So I simply said "OK I am done." and flipped my resignation into his desk. Best vacation I ever had!

How sad and yet annoying. A few years before I retired the same thing happened to me. I planned to go for around 3 weeks not counting my normal weekends off. I explained that I did not wish to book the cruise until I had the vacation approved. My immediate supervisor approved the vacation and her boss approved the vacation which I asked for in writing. They thought it odd but I said alot can happen in a year. They both gave me copies of the signed vacation leave. Life happens and I got another supervisor and the person who was in charge retired. Yep, you guessed it they said, oh well you can't go on vacation. I had my proof that my vacation was approved and sadly had to ask if I died or became deathly ill what would you do? I went on my vacation, had a great time, and yes I continued to work for several years after this episode.

BUT I wonder if KITT would be covered as the problem would be known before you apply for the insurance.

I doubt any, work, insurance coverage. The OP, now, before the insurance, knows there is NO guarantee of approval. I'd say, they need a cancel for any reason policy.

Now it's up to them, IF they are going to take the risk. They've been warned by the employer. Do they have a union and signed documents?

They are before final payment.

Not sure how it works there but if you have it in writing multiple times discussing booking some thing then they would have to honour it? I’m a people leader, once I approve it, it’s approved and especially when things are booked. This why we have fair work Australia.

Can you not reach out to your HR dept to get advice that this has been approved?

If this ever happened to me I’d take the holdsy and clear my desk.

Very unfair for you, hope you seek higher management or HR advice. I’d keep going higher and higher until resolved.

Let us know how you get on, fingers and toes!

don't blame you for venting. Sometimes it is all we can do. Let's hope you can work this out. If you have insurance I wonder if that will help you, at least get your money back. Good luck and I bet it will work out just fine. Keep us posted. my fingers are crossed for you.

Many years ago hubby was on a 6 month contract with a particular company. Before he took the job he did let them know we had an extended vacation planned that would last about 2 weeks. We all know 2 weeks is not a long vacation but he had only been with the company about 4 months. Even though they were aware of his plans and the contract was for 6 months when he returned they decided to cancel the remaining couple of months of his contract. So he simply cleaned out his desk and chalked it up to experience. He learned nothing is so secure that it can't change.

I don't know the specifics of your occupation, how employable you are, or how much you like your job. But having all of that permission in writing maybe it would be a good time to consult a labor attorney or at least hint at such an action with your boss if he/she gets a little testy about it.

Very sorry about your situation. Our job has similar uncertainty and we carry insurance that allows us to cancel for any reason or cancel for work. Over the past 5 years, we have cancelled week of cruise (or day of cruise last year) three times.

I second this. Get travel insurance and no worries!

Too late for OP to get insurance for this trip. You can't insure a risk that you know is likely to occur.

If you want insurance you have to buy it when you book, or if you use cruise line insurance at the time of final payment.

Ummm, yeah, that's a big NO. I asked for time off two years ago to do a 10-year anniversary repeat of our original B2B Med and Transatlantic cruises. It required I take 20 days off. I had done 30 days three times in the past, so thought this would be no problem -- but deliberately bought travel insurance with the work reasons coverage anyway and paid a nice hefty price. When my work denied my ability to go and refused to budge, I contacted the insurance and they refused to pay! We went back and forth for months, but to no avail. So I not only lost the extra monies I paid for that coverage, but they wouldn't honor it when it came into play. Their excuse: you knew you might not get guaranteed approval?!? How do they know that? Very bizarre and I guess they will find a way to wiggle out of it if they don't want to pay.

If you want insurance you have to buy it when you book, or if you use cruise line insurance at the time of final payment.

There are third party policies you can buy whenever you please, but you have the pre-existing exclusions. And cancel for any reason coverage (at least what I'd looked at) costs more $$ and only refunds 75%.

If before final payment, I hate to say it but you may want to try to nail things down and if you can't, well, cancelling is an option!!

I've in the past offered to cancel a non-refundable vacation IF my employer reimbursed me. They would always tell me to go ahead and go.

I agree - sucks!

I will say I have some fantastic coworkers who are willing to adjust scheduling to help make this possible.

I work as a night surgical technician in obstetrics and we must have a team on at all times. That’s why I gave so much advanced notice of vacation.

Yes- I’m Aus too and when I read this I thought to myself-‘how can a boss deny you time off if it is in writing?’ I would definitely be taking this higher, probably to the union. This is definitely a case of ‘unfair working conditions.’ We’re very lucky here, more annual leave as well as long service leave. I feel for the OP as I don’t think it is acceptable what the boss has done. Approving leave, then denying it is just not on.

Sometimes you just have to go with the flow. Best cruise I ever went out had itinerary changed last minute due to Hurricane and had to replan everything at last minute.
