Smokers a problem on Mariner

i believe Royal provides adequate areas for smokers including half the main pool deck, one whole side of exterior promenade deck, half casino. Smokers on other hand feel differently

Yesterday Was using main pool (family pool) in non smoking section, not 2 minutes in our chair and guy 2 chairs over is smoking a cigarette. And by Guy I mean dirt bag. Wife beater shirt, shower shoes with marijuana leaf knee high socks. Basketball shorts down to his shins. Asked him to use the smoking section away from my kid. Tells me **** you. I tell pool attendant staff. They shrug it off. We leave pool

Today, similar situation, guy takes lounge chair next to us in shade on non smoking side, breaks out an e cig the size of a 1980s Walkman and clouds my kids face. This time I was a bit more direct. The other side is the smoking side. I don’t want you doing that again in my kids face. Again I approached pool attendant staff and they kind of stared through me. I asked if they would address it and they said they don’t want to upset guests. Left pool again.

Went to guest services to let them know I didn’t appreciate my kid and I being chased out of family pool non smoking section by smokers. Was told hotel director was “off” today.

Asst front desk manager vowed to make it right which to me was blowing us off but later in day notified we received $200 Obc. Generous as I am a realist and no one has a time machine.

I hate going to front desk ever for anything on a cruise. It’s a waste of time. Maybe royal should train their deck staff that it’s not inappropriate to ask smokers to use the designated smoking section. Pissed me off big time being told they didn’t want to offend the smoker. I don’t go to smoking sections and complain, nor do I say they need to eliminate all smoking. I admit I wish casino was smoke free but I’m not a big gambler so don’t fight it. Thanks for the $200 Royal. If you displayed a little back bone yesterday you wouldn’t have been in a position to offer me a single cent, nor would I have had to visit GS.

They don’t want to upset guests but it’s ok for you to be uncomfortable on vacation.

Debark a couple of these goofballs in Nassau if they can’t handle rules and suddenly a request to use a designated smoking section won’t get belligerent responses.

I was on Mariner a few weeks ago and a guy 2 doors down was smoking a cigar on the balcony. I called and they sent someone to my room about 10 minutes later. They came out to my balcony to look over and see if he was still out there smoking. I had already told him that he had gone back inside already. They told me they would “monitor” it (how?). I would have felt better if they came to my room after going to his room and giving a stern warning. But I got the feeling they didn’t do that and weren’t planning to.

Next day, he was back out there smoking again. Ditto for a guy 2 decks below me. I didn’t bother calling.

Between that experience and this thread, I am wondering if the type of crowd the inexpensive 3 or 4 day cruise attracts, might be one I’m better off avoiding.

I'm getting the impression from this thread and from other threads that these weekend cruises are just great big party boats. We have one of these booked for the end of April. We're going to be in West Palm Beach for a conference and thought this would be great way to extend a business trip with a little pleasure. We're mid 50's and not party people. I don't mind people drinking and enjoying themselves around me but I really don't have any interest in spending the weekend with a bunch of drunken 20 somethings binging all weekend long. Are we going to regret booking this little weekend getaway? There is a 7 day Western Caribbean leaving the same day out of Miami. Should I cancel and rebook on this one?

Is it a 3 or a 4 night? What ship? Being LATE April, you should dodge all the Spring Break shenanigans.

3 night April 26 on Mariner

No doubt it'll be one of the livelier cruises you've been on. I did a 3 night Enchantment that was a bit of a party as well as a 4 night on Brilliance over a 3 day holiday weekend that was a tad more of a mosh pit than I would of preferred. The silver lining is that a lot of the cruisers are newer to cruising and don't know the ins and outs, so it's easy to "swim against the current" if you will or find those hidden quiet places etc, also the diamond lounge should be near-empty!

Certainly strange that they'd "rather" offer $200 credit than have people enforce the rule. Just need a burly guy monitoring who revels in that sort of thing :D

While I tend to let little upset me, I can certainly appreciate your intervention and frustrations with the blokes and the staff here.

I hope this won't be an issue on a 7 day cruise. DW has asthma attacks if she is exposed to too much smoke. I understand not wanting to upset guests but there are two guests involved in this case so one of them is bound to be upset, why not upset the one actually breaking the rule?

I would not worry about it too much. On the Anthem's pool deck, (not the solarium), there is a very large smoking section on one side. Just make sure you are on the opposite side when walking thru, as it IS very smokey, but easily avoidable. In the casino, there is a VERY tiny smoking section way back in a corner.

The Anthem is really not a party ship like the Carnival ships are and are not 3-5 day cruises. They are at least 7-12 day cruises.

I hope you and your wife have an amazing time on an amazing ship.

Actually I'm surprised that you are still sailing with Royal.

Also waiting for Royal to do another Brenda move

Absurd comment, can tell you don’t run a business at all.

Let me see if this computes: I’d rather get NOTHING; meaning there would never be a reason to visit guest services because these issues don’t exist.

There’s a big difference between demanding free things, and asking them to either provide clean rooms or maintain nonsmoking sections. In neither instance did I demand anything. In fact did not even ask for anything other than what was advertised to me.

A lot of the crowd onboard is the weekend party set. I wouldn’t be concerned on a 7 day

I was recently on the Mariner, while sitting at the pool bar I noticed a couple of times people smoking there. I just let the bartenders know & they took care of the problem.

Was this the deck 11 or deck 12 bar? Reason I ask is that the entire deck 12 bar area (port and starboard) seems to be smoking on every Voyager/Freedom class ship.

Thanks for the re-assurance, it is what we would expect on a 7 day cruise.

As an ex smoker, and my partner is still a smoker... these people you describe tick (not the word I wanted to use) me off!! The smoking areas are plenty large, and there is no reason to blow smoke in someones face, who has not chosen to smoke.

I think was is the worst is.. "they don't want to upset guests." Aren't you a guest? Well they are not doing a good job at not upsetting you. The $200 is there way of doing something without doing something. Why even bother to announce the guest conduct policy during muster if they have no intention of following it.

UGH makes me mad. While smoking one time on the out door promenade, I once saw a smoker throw a butt overboard and I lost it. I am surprised that I didn't get in trouble for admonishing the idiot that could have started the ship on fire.

Sorry this happened to you and your kid. :(

What is it about these pool monitors? I ran into the same thing on NCL when one refused to say anything to the man in the hot tub with his baby in a diaper.

I know what you mean about not wanting to go to guest services. I'd rather tell the person nearby, whose job it is to pay attention to what is going on, then to waste my time going to guest services.

Which side of the pool deck is smoking anyway?

The crew is reluctant to enforce any rule nowadays because they are afraid of upsetting guests and receiving less than a 10. They live and die by the almighty 10. That's why the MDR staff always mention how important a 10 on our post cruise evaluation is.

They don't enforce no smoking, no chair hogging, no shorts/wife beaters in the MDR, or much of anything except maybe smuggling on some booze or an iron.

We reduce our numerical scores when rules ARE NOT enforced and it affects our cruise - such as a balcony smoker.

If the almighty 10 is so important, they should earn it by doing the job we expect.

So they get a 10 from the person they allow to break the rules and a 0 from the person complaining about the lack of rule enforcement. If a crewmember told me that I would point that obvious point out to them as I took their name.

We found the casino similar . People would be in the smoking section and move over to a slot on the non smoking section but keep smoking, staff just walked past them. I found being loud and woo hoo ing a lot when I won soon moved them on, one smoking lady complained to me that I was too noisy and I just told her I was thinking of the lawsuit I could hit her with for smoking in the non smoking section next to someone who was asthmatic, she near enough ran away and stayed clear of the non smoking section while I was there lol. The waiter Jonny was behind me laughing his head off.
