Smokers a problem on Mariner

Sounds like Royal isn't the line for the OP considering the "dirt bag" passengers and the apathetic staff unwilling to appropriately deal with them.

Perhaps Regent, Crystal or Oceania would be a much better choice to ensure one gets what they paid for.

Wait, so he refers to one passenger as being a dirt bag and you somehow infer that means he thinks all are? I'm not quite sure how you jumped to that conclusion, but in doing so you're being way more judgmental than the OP was. I don't know about you, but I'd likely refer to someone in a wife-beater, marijuana socks, and smoking in a non-smoking section as a dirt bag also, and it has nothing to do with the cruise line.

I hope this won't be an issue on a 7 day cruise. DW has asthma attacks if she is exposed to too much smoke. I understand not wanting to upset guests but there are two guests involved in this case so one of them is bound to be upset, why not upset the one actually breaking the rule?

This was my thought too. They don't want to upset the rule breaker but don't give a hoot how the innocent guest feels. Talk about backwards. I'd be livid if that was me.

We are ex-smokers ( finally ! ) but we were always considerate of others who did not enjoy being exposed to our cigarette/cigar/pipe smoke. It was simple a matter of good manners and consideration for others. That's all.

Any company I give my money to I want to get what I paid for. Not sure how any of those lines would make a difference.

What is it about these pool monitors? I ran into the same thing on NCL when one refused to say anything to the man in the hot tub with his baby in a diaper.

I know what you mean about not wanting to go to guest services. I'd rather tell the person nearby, whose job it is to pay attention to what is going on, then to waste my time going to guest services.

Which side of the pool deck is smoking anyway?

Port side.

wouldn't it be fun to have a well-hidden little plastic water pistol and then say "oh it wasn't me!" after you discreetly extinguish said cigar? :'):'):')

I like that. Somewhere I have a card that reads “if I see you smoking, I’ll assume you are on fire and act accordingly.”

Again I approached pool attendant staff and they kind of stared through me. I asked if they would address it and they said they don’t want to upset guests.

If they had said that to me, I would have responded "So, what the hell am I??!!! Cargo???"

Nope. Won't tolerate any of those shenanigans. Two of my kids (although older teens now and haven't had to use an inhaler for 2 years) literally went from green on their peak flow meter to ZERO in less than 3 minutes being exposed to smoke, smoke on someone's clothing, etc. It's honestly why we only sailed another cruise line. We are taking a chance that they will NOT have such a severe reaction...but here's what I'll do.

1. Videotape the person smoking.

2. Go directly to an agent and ask who do I need to show this video to in order to get this guest moved to the smoking section? Ask for THEIR supervisor if he is not removed in a minute.

I'll do the same for balconies...videotape it, if they need to 'see' it happening, I can make that happen. Now, I need to go research where smoking is allowed. I'm on Liberty of the Seas and we are on decks 10 and 12 to be as far away from the casino...but am I close to smoking sections??

3 night April 26 on Mariner
I would switch, especially if your cruise falls on the actual weekend.

Some people are actually ignorant of the rules, and or smoking areas. Had a coworker tell us all about his first cruise. And he loved the balcony, especially having an evening cigar. I gasped you aren't allowed to smoke there. He truly didn't know.

How about next time lackadaisical does the shrug. You ask for their name. Better yet take a picture of them and state they will be your review.

Im an ex smoker. Me and hubbys first cruise he still smoked. Our entire time on cruise was spent in one corner of pool deck. It was an eye opener for him. He quite 6 months later.

Guess he liked cruising more than smoking[emoji6]

(throws hands up)

I really don't carry more than towels, room keys, sunblock when going to the pool. No electronic devices. Security wears body cams. I don't want to go sticking a camera in someones face personally. More things that are a waste of time and a distraction from why I am there.

I generally operate in a manner that I try not to infringe on others, anywhere. In return all I want is to not be hassled either. Anything requiring further effort on vacation is a major negative for me.

Awesome idea. Thanks for this suggestion. It drives me batty to deal with inconsiderate smokers. If they choose to make themselves ill that is their choice. But it is totally irresponsible and infuriating to make people that choose not to smoke have to deal with smoke.

Is smoking still allowed on balconies? If so which side? Port or starboard? And is it region/ship/class of ship specific?

I have had chain smoking balcony neighbors (within rules) once on port side of Explorer and they rendered our balcony unusable. That was about 7 to 8 years ago.

Smoking is not allowed on any balconies on RC ships, except for those to whom the rules don't apply.

If someone tells me to **** off the last thing I would do is stick a camera in their face.

Thanks, Bob. And how about top decks? I read port side is smoking side is that true for all royal ships?

Basically if I want to avoid smoke as much as I can, should I just stick to starboard side balconies?

I don't believe that port side is smoking on all ships. Royal says smoking is starboard, except on Oasis class, but smoking was on the port side on Adventure this past July.

I was on Mariner a few weeks ago and a guy 2 doors down was smoking a cigar on the balcony. I called and they sent someone to my room about 10 minutes later. They came out to my balcony to look over and see if he was still out there smoking. I had already told him that he had gone back inside already. They told me they would “monitor” it (how?). I would have felt better if they came to my room after going to his room and giving a stern warning. But I got the feeling they didn’t do that and weren’t planning to.

Next day, he was back out there smoking again. Ditto for a guy 2 decks below me. I didn’t bother calling.

Between that experience and this thread, I am wondering if the type of crowd the inexpensive 3 or 4 day cruise attracts, might be one I’m better off avoiding.

When Royal started getting rid of the cigar lounges, I feared this might be one of the results. Unfortunately, I think incidents like the one you experienced will continue. Even as a non-smoker, I thought having the cigar lounges was a good feature because it gave people somewhere to smoke other than the casino. Not only was it a place to smoke, it was comfortable, and extremely well ventilated- so you didn't have to worry about much smoke escaping to other areas of the ship.

Port side on Enchantment, at least on deck 9. I can see them from where I’m sitting right now. [emoji6]

And you know this how?

Because i am not the type of person that anyone would ever attempt to confront like that. I don't have the look or demeanor where anyone would just flippantly tell me to **** off.

I am the dude that "asks" people to get off their phones during a movie and they comply no questions asked. I am the dude where people might act "aggressive" to my lady friends and then when I show up they are get quiet as church mice and move on.

If someone was smoking in a non smoking area and I said something to them I promise they would not tell me to **** off. They don't want that... lol

Because.....

Physical confrontations are frowned upon, verbal not as much. [emoji6]
