Balloon Drop - Regal 10.14.2017

I attended one balloon drop and that was one too many. It is an accident waiting to happen. There are about 3 balloons that have "gift notes" inside. There is such a frenzy and I can see someone being trampled. All common sense evaporates and the shoving and pushing begins.

Have been to several and enjoyed them. Never saw anyone get injured including the small children who attended. I guess each to their own. Are you sure of the date as we disembarked in New York from the Regal on October 14.

We use to stand back and watch but several years ago, a friend said "let's go see if we can get a prize". All of a sudden he said "let's get out of here". His hand was cut. It is hard to break the ballons so I guess someone used a knife to break them fast to see if they could get a prize. It was so packed that he had no idea who did it.

LOVE the pics!

And, WAY cool video!

I am thinking that that they didn't always do this, except for special occasions. But, they dropped golden(yellow) balloons on the cruises as part of their 50th celebration. It was so popular that I think they do this on most cruises on the first formal night????

If we cruise on the Regal, I am looking forward to this, as I have never been in a real balloon drop this big.

I wish they would drop even more balloons!

I feel sorry for the poor guy who has to blow up all those balloons. He must have been very light headed by the time he was done.

I have seen at one time or another all of the following:

a) A machine used to blow up each balloon.

b) Several cruise staff members doing the job with their mouths.

c) Inviting passengers to the fun activity of blowing up balloons for the big drop.

I believe they started the balloon drop with the 50th anniversary celebration. I don't remember them doing it before. I usually watch the event from the fiesta or promenade deck. They have music to accompany the drop which is nice. I have never seen a "frenzy" as the balloons drop and usually see kids running around collecting balloons that are still inflated. I suspect some pax have a sharp point to break the balloons as I hear a lot of popping going on.

I have sailed on the Sea Princess, Dawn Princess, and the Sea Princess when they use to be in Port Everglades, and they did the balloon drop on Caribbean Night outside at the pool deck....it was a caribbean party with dancing, all the trimmings, and at the strike of 12 midnight they had the balloon drop...It sort of was like a big NYE Party....I use to look forward to this on every Princess Cruise....I will be going on the Regal Princess on November 1, 2018...and hoping that there will be another balloon drop....another thing i did enjoy was the Champayne Waterfall....to me that was the highlight of the cruise.....Very different from all the other cruise lines...

Won $50 gift card to any Princess boutique on the Diamond in February on the balloon drop. Balloon ended up under my chair as I sat there and watched the feeding frenzy. Some people got $5.00 coupons for the casino and there were some coffee card coupons as well. Basically the same prizes they give out for the stamps we are all encouraged to run around getting when we board the ship. On one of those draws, I once one a $100 towards a piece of art (when they called my name and told me what it was - I said No Thank you and then a minute or so later, my husband's name was drawn for a coffee card. Was fun.

Regal has this on the 2nd formal night and it kicked off a really fun dance party with Static our ship band. Kids insisted on popping the balloons, and some cried because they wanted to keep their balloons. Should have really kept them or the DJ in the Piazza until the wee hours, but it did send about 100 people to Club 6, which was a ghost town for much of our Spring Break cruise.

April 1 to 8 cruise, 700 youths under 12 .. full house.

I was thinking the same thing. Brought back visions of my prom when we blew up hundreds of balloons. Either way they had one on our last cruise and I wanted to go but got side tracked and missed it. So it goes. Guess I have another chance on our next trip.
