Skipping Muster Drill on the Sensation

To me they should scan everyone's sign and sail card. 10 minutes after the announcement for drill anyone not checked should be called. If they don't show up within the next five minutes they should be located and escorted off the ship.

This.

I guarantee- get the word out that you can and will be punished for not attending on time, and people will comply!

I was on the Sensation last Sept. They were not scanning sail and sign cards. There was a family in front of us standing in the sweltering heat for 45 minutes during muster drill.. then they announced names and cabins to report to a certain area. One of the names mentioned was the father in front of us. He said what is that about? I said they are calling names for people that didn't show up. He said , they called his name. And said he better not be put off the ship or made to do another muster drill. Not sure what happened

I've been on 4 CCL cruises in the last year, going on Sensation Thursday. They all scanned the Sail & Sign card before the muster drill. No way out of it, unfortunately. They were all fairly quick & efficient.

3 here....only Freedom last month scanned ours. Hopefully they're all doing it now. It was much quicker that way.

On the Fantasy last month, they scanned one card in our family, then did verified we were all there and checked us off. I imagine this will be fleet wide very soon. This was the first cruise I've been on where they are using handheld scanners (including in port when you get on/off ship). That makes it much easier to track attendance. And yes, we had folks who were announced to attend a special muster after sailaway!

Some people are special, after all, right?

Why should they wait with the great unwashed while they enjoy another drink on the Lido deck?

Glad they were forced to do it... those are the same idiots who would panic and run roughshod over others in a real emergency!

We missed the muster drill in Puerto Rico once. Not because we think we're special, or didn't want to stand with the great unwashed! In order to get to the airport on time we had to get up at 2:30 AM. Since sail away was at 10:00 PM, we laid down to catch a quick nap and simply slept through the announcements. We received a note the next day asking us to attend muster drill in the theatre, which we did. There are many reasons someone may miss it, don't be so quick to assume anything. I'll never understand why some people are so quick to judge and think the worst of others.

When we sailed on the Vista in Europe, they scanned our sign and sail card with a iPad (they also used these for embarking and debarking). My guess it will take a while to roll that out. On our last cruise on the Pride for a NYE cruise, they had supervisors with clicker counting people. Of course, people can get really creative in finding places to hide and act like children......

On our cruise on the Breeze in January they scanned the Sail and Sign Cards with iPads at all the entrances to our muster station. They then proceeded to call out names and cabin numbers of the people that were missing. Some had managed to get into the theater without getting their cards scanned, but others were trying to skip out on it. We were told by the guy in charge of our muster station that those who missed the drill would have to attend a mandatory make up session, or risk being put off in the first port.

Of course they will refund your cruise, hotel and airfare. You are not getting kicked off a ship, ridiculous

I agree that's not going to happen , but there needs to be a new system that works . Perhaps some posters here could help find a solution instead of sarcasm :D.

Actually the new "system" (used on the Vista for one) is a significant improvement.

I suspect we are headed to a world where all cruisers are required to have a UHF RFID tags on them at all times (think Disney Magic Bands). Should make taking attendance at muster drills a snap. More importantly, knowing where everybody is will prove invaluable in an actual emergency.

And, yeah, it's creepy as all get out... but that's where we are headed.

on the elation they never scanned the cards, i thought wow i could have skipped it , as long as i know the station area to go to.

If it's like the three times I was on elation, they knew how many people were supposed to be at the muster station and counted heads...and if someone was missing they'd find out who was missing and it causes a big delay. The card scanning is definitely better.

Just off the Freedom this morning, and they scanned our cards with an iPad at Muster. Much quicker, and they were able to call out those who didn't attend. I will say, though, I missed "dinging" myself on and off the ship. Lol But I understand this makes things easier.

Wow I'm glad I read this because after my last cruise on the Liberty I was planning to try to find a way to skip out on the whole muster ordeal.

The last muster I attended on the Liberty was a tortuous ordeal that almost broke me from going on a cruise ever again. They had us crammed in lines like sardines in sweltering heat of Galveston Texas in the middle of summer. It took forever and there wasn't even one bit of air coming into the semi closed off outdoor area we were being tortured in. 2 people passed out and one woman's son was obviously getting overheated and looked like he was about to keel over. She begged for a glass of water for him but was ignored. The rest of the passengers tried to squeeze even tighter together to give them a little air space but I myself started feeling like I was going to go down as well. I can tell you right now I wasn't paying one hoot of attention to anything they were telling us, had no clue even where this station was as I had been herded towards this area in such a great herd that I had no idea where I was. It seemed like a complete and utter waste of time as in the event of an emergency no matter how much muster training has been given there would be panic and pandemonium since there are just too many people on the ship. Why waste our time???? I've been on 3 cruises and the first 2 the musters were tolerable but the last one on the Liberty was downright inhumane.

Please just drop the charade that this muster drill prepares everyone for an emergency.

Whether it prepares you for an emergency or not is irrelevant. It is the law (not merely policy) that you attend.

Wrong they wouldn't have to refund anything. As you would be getting kicked off for not following federal safety rules. It would be no different then being kicked off for breaking any other rule people get kicked off for. What is ridiculous is thinking you can break the rules with no punishment.

At Hanauma Bay, they make every beach-goer watch a 20 minute video about respecting the reef before they snorkel or explore. They have to sign out to prove attendance.

It would be interesting to see how this concept could work as part of the check-in process. The muster drill could perhaps be shorter and more of just everyone walking to where they WOULD be standing and less talking from the staff.

My first cruises we all had to wear our life jackets as well, and that was pretty uncomfortable- we feel thankful not to do that.

I just close my eyes or stare at ceiling listening to directions in my happy place. Reminding myself I'm on vacation and get over it. Taking deep breaths and finding Jesus in my heart to ease my irritation at the stragglers or the adult-children heckling the staff.

"YIKES" to the previous comments....

Times have changed, I remember back when, we had to wear our vests on the promenade deck in the horrendous heat, for what seemed like hours, uncomfortable, I too remember some people fainting because of this. Last year, we were at our assigned place, when a group of people came in and found their way to seats, the crew member in charge asked for their cruise card to "scan" them in, upon doing so, only TWO of the group were in the right place, the others assumed because they were together, it didn't matter what section they went to. I'm coming up with the word "entitled"
