Finders/Keepers ?

We were on the Christmas /New Year NCL Spirit Cruise.

At 10.30pm on New Years Eve we were in the Galaxy of the Stars deck, I looked at my watch and said to my DH that I would go down to the Atrium to see if the band playing was better than the duo in Galaxy .Between the two venues my watch slipped off my wrist. :(

The next morning I went to the Customer Information desk to see if it had been handed in. No luck !! I went back a couple of times but eventually realised that whoever found it was keeping it.

It was a Rotary gold plated - not the most expensive - but a present from my DH. The next day we had an hours time change .. so whoever had my watch was changing the time knowing it was not theirs.

My question is .. if you found something would you return it - if it was possible?

I cell phone fell out of my backpack when I was boarding a cruise. We were surprised when someone found it and found my wife's cell number and call her while we were eating lunch. I hadn't noticed yet that my phone was missing. We met up soon after and the gentleman returned my phone. i offered to buy him a drink, but he had the drinks package so we 'bought' each other a drink. :D

OP sorry you lost your watch. Keep checking to see if it was found later and turned in.

Sorry you lost your watch. My experience has been that people are honest and return (or try to return) items that they find. It might have rolled/fell under a chair and not have been found until days later or even after you disembarked. Maybe you can contact NCL to see if they have a central lost and found.

On our second cruise my wife left her camera in a public bathroom one evening. We told the concierge the next morning (Carlos!) and before we were done with the day we had it back. Honesty abounds. Only exception some times is cash -- hard to claim ownership and prove it.

Sorry that you lost your watch, if someone did find it all they had to do was bring it to Guest Services. Once we were in Universal on line for a ride and my husband found someone's passport and inside of it was a bunch of American Express Travelers checks. He looked at the picture and on his way up to give it to the ride attendant he saw the person and gave him back his passport and money. There was no thank you or nod of appreciation. Then another time we were at Disney and my son found a man's wallet. There was a lot of cash in it along with a drivers license. I had to wait for my husband to get off the ride so we could bring it to Guest Services when a man in a panic came looking for his wallet. He matched the license photo. He was so grateful and wanted to give my son money but I wouldn't let my son accept it. It was nice that he offered but we were just happy we helped him.

If I found a $5 bill, I would keep it. If I found a watch, I would definitely turn it in.

Several years ago I lost my American Express card and drivers license in a casino. I received them in the mail two days later...someone had turned them in and the casino sent them to me. My card was never used by anyone else, though of course I reported it lost right away. We once found a new camera in a drawer at a hotel right after Christmas. We turned it in and the person who had just gotten it as a gift was so happy. Conversely, DH forgot his new camera in a hotel room and that was the end of that!

If I see something that is not mine, I either leave it or turn it in to staff at the location as a lost and found item. Think that when you are talking about a wallet or a cell phone most people agree (though there was a thread about this on another board ref a cell phone where a few people stated that taking property left behind isn’t stealing).

Where the debate gets interesting is unidentifiable property (like cash); can turn it in to lost and found but no one would ever be able to confirm ownership if they came looking for it.

Where I work integrity is a big deal. There’s an old wives tale that they sometimes perform ‘integrity checks’ where they leave a $20 on the ground somewhere with a camera on it. If someone takes it and doesn’t hand it straight over to a supervisor they would be fired. So, my job is also the only place I’ve ever seen where if any amount of cash is ever dropped on the ground, no one will EVER pick it up. Seen dollar bills sit on the floor for weeks at a time before. I can still taste to soap that my mother put on my tongue, when I found a pencil box on the bus and brought it home. I was in third grade and said "finders keepers". Nothing good happens to someone willing to steal. If you're not going to try to find the rightful owner, leave it.

Unfortunately thief is a fact on cruise ships. Last 3 since Nov. I heard 2 reports of continued lost items. All were left in the buffet or pool lounges, phones and tablets. I saw the same people throughout the sailings and none got their items back.

Unfortunately I see ALL the time, people leaving their purses, phones, tablets etc holding space on cruise ships, would you do this at your local Mac Donalds? Sorry but it's a poor habit and the naive thinking those who cross a cruise ship threshold are all "safe". It's just as easy to to carry a walmart bag around with some puzzles and your pencil in it to hold spaces. Why valuables are left are beyond me????

I would have picked it up and given it to the nearest employee I found (bartender, restaurant server, whatever). If they said I had to give it to guest services, then I would either just leave it there or take it to my room and leave a note for my stateroom host. I wouldn't stand in line to turn it in

I like to think that it was dropped in some towels that were thrown into the laundry and the watch wasn't seen , or you dropped it by accident into the garbage and it was removed that way. I hate to think that it was taken, because that means someone is in for a very large dose of Karma.

My wife set her expensive sunglasses down at the sink in one of the public bathrooms to wash her hands or whatever. It was a little crowded. It was just for a few seconds and it was next to her. It was gone in those few seconds she looked away. This was on a Disney Cruise ship. Unfortunately, it happens everywhere.

A woman lost her wedding ring in the spa on the dawn a few years back and she was besides herself!!! My husband went into the pool and searched for her and did find it, She was elated. The woman told the staff at the spa how my husband searched for it for her and they sent a bottle of wine to our room as a Thank you.

That was not necessary but it was a nice Gesture by NCL to thank people for helping others out.

Fast forward to this year my husbands necklace opened up in the pool and he lost a charm that was his fathers with sentimental value. We started to search the pool and as others realized we were looking for something everyone searched with us. We found the charm after about a half hour search but he was so happy to have it back !!!!

I am a strong believer in Karma

A few years ago while I was in the indoor hot tub in the spa, I stepped on something and went down to pick it up. Turned out to be the most beautiful set of wedding bands intertwined together from Cartier. When I got back to my room I noticed two names were engraved in the rings with a date. I showered, dressed (took at least two hours) and walked with my husband to the desk where the lost and found was. I asked them if anyone had come by to inquire about a lost ring. They said no, I gave them my name and room number and told them if anyone did to please let me know. As I was walking away, my husband overheard a young man asking if anyone found a ring??? He was with his husband and they were both very upset. I walked over and asked if they could describe the ring and give me the names engraved in the rings and the date. Not only could they do that, one of them was wearing the exact same ring!!! The names also matched up!!! I could not believe that two hours after finding the ring, at the exact same time, on a ship with over 4000 people, we would be at the lost and found at the same time!!! I can not tell you how happy I was to find who this ring belonged to and to not leave it with the lost and found never knowing if it was claimed. It was such a wonderful moment and I would not have given up the whole cruise until I found the owner!!! It was the first day of our 7-day cruise and I could only imagine how terrible the time would have been for this couple.. I do believe in Karma :)

That's great, but why didn't you turn the ring in to the lost and found? It seems like that would be a better way for someone to claim it.

I found a camera on a cruise ship. Somebody left it on a chair near a bar. I turned it into guest services. I've turned in a few things over the years.

On the flip side, I have lost items that have been turned in. I left a mini iPad in my hotel room once and the lady cleaning the room tracked me down to give it back to me. I was in the hotel's waiting room waiting to board a shuttle to the cruise port. It was at the Country Inn and Suites in Port Canaveral. Another time my son lost his wallet while we were on vacation and somebody mailed it back. My husband lost his wallet while we were traveling and at a Walgreens. It had a lot of cash in it. Somebody turned it in to the cashier and all of the cash was still there. People can be wonderful.
