I witnessed smoking indoors on Oasis of the Seas!

We were on the Navigator a week ago and the crowd was mainly college students. Most were fairly polite and well behaved (other than the drunks coming back aboard in Mexico).

When waiting to board the ship in the waiting area for the Platinum plus passengers in Miami, one college student was puffing away at their e-cigarette in the waiting area.

The first night in the MDR, several people at our table told me that one of the college kids behind me was blowing smoke. He was hiding an e-cigarette below the table and kept puffing at it. I let the Head Waiter know and he watched for about 5 minutes til he witnessed it himself and then confronted the individual.

Two nights later, the college student in front of me in the main theater was puffing away at an e-cigarette in the theatre throughout the entire show.

Following night, the college student in front of me during the Quest in Studio B was doing the same.

This is the first time I have witnessed this indoors on a ship over the course of about 10 cruises. May just have been the cruise we chose this year, but it seems as though those with the e-cigarettes couldn't give a damn about where they could smoke them.

I would have said something to them, the smoker. Smoking of anything is prohibited except in designated areas. The e-cigs are also a fire hazard.

Hallelujah!!!

The Oasis Casino was a giant smoke-filled gas chamber 2 days this week. People were coughing like crazy.

You’re lucky it was only 2 days. On my cruise it was every day. It’s revolting.

It's a CIGARETTE for crying out loud. I hate when people smoke where they aren't supposed to. But first I realized that they are an adult who is still stupid enough to smoke in the first place, so they really aren't that worth caring about. I hate it too. But in the real world, there are d-bags and losers everywhere who skirt the rules. Do you get you panties in a twist when someone passes on the right or double parks?

While it is annoying when someone passes on the right or double parks, neither of those is going to set off an asthma attack or could cause a fire. Inconsiderate smokers affect everyone who uses that space. Perhaps the more people who are willing to get their panties in a twist over it, the fewer people will pollute shared space?

Exactly. That comparison wasn’t even remotely equivalent. Fire hazard on a ship is a big deal!!

Have witnessed it for years. Indoor asthma triggers that may affect you include:

  • Secondhand Smoke: Secondhand smoke, or environmental tobacco smoke, consists of a mixture of both the smoke irritants exhaled by smokers of cigarettes, pipes, or cigars and from the burning tobacco itself. Environmental tobacco smoke contains more then 250 different cancer-causing chemicals such as benzene, vinyl chloride, and arsenic that may irritate your airways and lead to asthma symptoms.

Just a little FYI for those of you who assume that every obese person you see on a scooter or in a wheelchair is in need of a mobility aid because of their weight, in many, many cases the opposite is true. The weight gain often happens BECAUSE of the disability. While you are looking at my 500 lb body in my wheelchair, judging me as a fat slob and looking at me with disgust I am living with medical issues that you can't begin to fathom and just trying to enjoy my vacation. Instead of making assumptions try getting to know me, or someone like me, you may just find us great company!

I hope to meet you on a future cruise.

The things people get alarmed by....

Seriously, cruising is the perfect vacation for you. Don't go to Vegas, and definitely DON'T go to any major city, especially overseas.

Skirting the rules on a cruise could get a lot of people killed. I have been through a house fire and the thought of being in a fire on the ocean is pretty scary. We all know the risks on a cruise but someone who cares nothing of the welfare of others is pretty disconcerting.

You do know they allow smoking on RCI ships, right? While fire is a danger, it is not quite so much a danger that they eliminate it from their ships. Some cruiselines, still let you smoke in your cabin. While I would prefer a non-smoking ship, I don’t think the complete fear being expressed is rational.

JMHO and YMMV

I agree with you. I hate second hand smoke and as long as smokers smoke in their designated outside areas, I’m ok.

I still believe the Casino should be no smoking as too much second hand smoke.

So, while I agree, I prefer a smoke free ship. I don’t actually care that they stay in their place. Yes, it is civilized to smoke in a designated smoking area, but 50 years ago, people smoked literally everywhere, and somehow our species is still in existence 50 years later. It is shocking, with all of the tv shows showing all of us the dangers that somehow we all survived.

Smoking is dumb and those who do it are on average going to die sooner and poorer. That said, good lord people...

Of course a smoke free ship is better. One obstacle at a time. Casino first.

Very well said it is a frightening thought and even more so for less mobile people.

I still remember when you could smoke on planes and in bars and restaurants too.

RC know the high number of people who smoke and designate smoking areas which is good of them.

People smoking where they shouldn't, have no excuse and should be ashamed of themselves.

How would you feel if someone came over to your house, started smoking a cigarette without permission inside, and then when confronted, stomped the butt out onto your floor?

I mean, it's not going to kill you...so no big deal, right?

Great comparison and so true. The selfish people need to put themselves into other people's shoes and understand they are being selfish and disrespectful to others.

Exactly, it is not going to kill me. And they would never be invited back into the house. I have no problem with RCI kicking them off their ship either. I just don’t think that the ship is all that much more likely to burn up. Could it happen? Sure.

All I am trying to say is this hyperventilating is way over the top. People smoke on ships at sea every single day.

JC<———— was never a smoker outside of trying to be cool as a teen or occasionally trying to be cool on the golf course as a young adult with a cigar. I quit participating in a sport I was really good out because it happened in a smoking overwhelming environment. Those environments are non-smoking now, but I have moved on, and when they put non-smoking rules up for vote I was against them. I try to stay true to important ideas, like freedom and liberty, not trying to punish other people to make them conform to my preferences.
