Sea days

Hi Mizchief

So the two of you like playing video games. That's a start.

As others have suggested, you can try to use this experience as a chance to break out a mold. I love games, I am very competitive. Hard as it may seem to believe, when I was a kid, there were no video games. Very cheap and easy, get a pencil (those are still used today) and a piece of paper and invent your own games. If you don't want to be creative, just google easy games to play with pen and paper.

Try card games, or board games. I can't imagine that video games are the only games that he will enjoy. If so you can always play some a few handheld device games.

Really, try to do things that you don't do at home. You don't have to drink alcohol at the bars (nobody will pressure you). You can drink coffee, tea, pop, or just ask for a glass of water. Socialize, you might meet future lifelong friends. Go, just trying to have fun.

have a great cruise

I had a friend that took his first cruise with his wife and did not want to go. She won the cruise and was going with a group of others that had won also. Me and another friend talked to him about all the things to do on the cruise and activities in Cozumel (4 day cruise). He countered every suggestion with weak opposing arguments. When we finished I told my other friend he will hate the cruise because he wants to hate the cruise. We suggested watching the hairy chest contest, mixology contest, ice carving, going away party, welcome aboard show, etc... we suggested hanging out with the other spouses, in Cozumel. we suggested the guys hang out and let the wives shop. We suggested that if his wife likes to shop, do not just follow her from one shop to another. Get with guys and go to Three Amigos. After all these suggestions, he went on the cruise and had a miserable time because that is what he wanted. I wished I could win a cruise. I have been on a dozen and never had a bad time, rain or shine. I would suggest read the fun times. You can find them online and read and do some preplanning. If he still does not like the cruise, find a friend to go, if he is miserable, it could spoil your fun.

I do not prefer sea days either. 1 is good, 2 is ok, 3+ is pushing it. With that said, I always find stuff to do, and it doesn't ruin anything. I would just much rather be at a port.

I agree 100% and never book a cruise with more than 2 sea days for this very reason. I do find them to be boring, especially after being on many cruises and having done many of the same trivia contests over and over again, the same activities and shows over and over again, etc. I also don't enjoy spending my whole day eating and drinking because I just end up with a stomach ache. Unlike many people here, I have plenty of free time at home to read or just sit idle not doing anything, so on vacation I want to have fun. I can't stand the smoky casino and I'm not a big drinker. I also don't like to socialize with strangers.

So, that probably makes me sounds like a boring person, and that may be true, but I still love cruises because I get to visit ~4 different places, go to beautiful beaches, enjoy full service meals while traveling to each destination, watching big screen movies at night, etc. I sort of plan on being bored on sea days but it's okay. I can't go on any other caribbean vacation where I get to spend 4 days at an island for a comparable price. Cruising is always the cheapest option.

But everyone has different opinions. Many people don't even get off of the ship which to me is absolutely unimaginable. Do whatever it is that makes you happy.

My suggestions for your husband are to check out the sports bar, participate in a basketball/volleyball game on the sports deck, check out the gym if that's something he likes to do, enjoy the buffet, people watch, sleep in, maybe bring a video game of some sort that doesn't require the Internet (like on your phone or laptop), download some movies from Netflix for offline viewing, take pictures of various areas of the ship that are empty during the day, etc.

If you are predisposed to being bored, that is exactly what you will be.You guys have waited 5 years to go on your honeymoon. Go with an open mind, there are hundreds of You-Tube videos that can you can watch, even for the particular cruise ship that you will be on. I would like to know what his post-cruise opinion is. Congratulations on your wedding and your cruise!

My husband and I are gamers. I just booked our 5th cruise for March 2019. We take our portable systems with us and either find a shady spot that doesn’t fade out the screen or find an empty table or chair by a window inside and play games while watching the ocean and just talking. We also bring a travel set of dominoes and cards and play games on the lido deck at the tables during non peak hours. My husband does not sit still well so sometimes he will just wander around the ship while I watch the ocean. We prefer sea days and love the ability to just do whatever we feel like without feeling rushed. At night we hit up the comedy shows while enjoying a pitcher of some mixed drink and sometimes see a show if it’s something we’re interested in. We have also just walked the track and talked or played mini golf or something similar. I know many would consider us playing on our 3DS’s a waste of vacation but for us it’s something we love and rarely do at home because of work schedules and just life in general.

Sea day suggestions:

Enjoy Sea day Brunch in the main dinning room.

Check out the arcade.

Get a free deck of cards from guest services, and play in the red frog pub or the lido.

Take a jigsaw puzzle with you and work it together in the pub or lido. Then pass the puzzle on to another guest or leave it in the ships library for future cruises.

Look for the Ship's Coin!!! It will be hidden somewhere in plain sight. No cheating by googling it on your ship...

Walk a few laps on the top deck and enjoy the breeze and the view together.

Play a round of mini-golf. Really interesting if it is windy...

Do the Ropes course. It is awesome.

At home we play video games together...that is actually how we met. We are fairly young. I am 27 he is 35.

Tallandthensome....we were going on this with some friends. But originally it was the Conquest but then Irma hit and we all had to reschedule. so we had to wait a bit for when we could go. Our friends already used their credits. so we are using ours in October rather than losing it.

Most of the things you have suggested sound fun. I just don't want him to be bored because it all sounds so fun but if he doesn't like it we will never go again. As for leaving him home and stuff....I married him. you did not. leave it alone.

He may take the sea days to sleep I hope to be busy on port days.

This is my Honeymoon...it is 5 years late. We are leaving the kids home and just having a us vacation.

My husband was afraid of sea days too. I think it is a matter of mind over matter! Kind of like that I get seasick, but I am determined to go on cruises. He is going to have to plan ahead.

I just asked my husband how he is now able to enjoy sea days. He says, "make you port days so active that you are glad to have a down day." Sounds good to me.

If this is your honeymoon and time away from the kids the. I suggest you guys just enjoy each other’s company. You will both love being able to sit and relax with a cold beverage and actually talk without being interrupted.

It will only be boring if he wants it to be boring. Don’t get in that mindset. Don’t just assume you won’t like doing something.

In the Spa/gym area there are steam rooms and saunas. Nice and relaxing. Last cruise I listened to a wonderful string trio in the Atrium bar. I second the suggestion of tea time, relaxing and we had a great chat with other cruisers there. The art auction can be fun to walk around and critique and if they pass out free champagne, even better!

Have a great cruise!

Mizchief, my husband is the same. He is so active in daily life, never sits still except for a couple of hours in the evening. Always go, go, go. And he does get bored if he tries to do the things I like, such as reading and napping on a lounge chair - sometimes in the sun, sometimes in the shade. Sitting in the hot tub chatting to new people. Back out to read and nap some more...oh and did I say eating, too?

So he will sit with me for an hour, then go walk laps on the sports deck, check out the gym, play mini golf, stop in the casino. He sometimes enjoys a game of bingo. Go to the cabin and watch TV for a while, then join me again for another hour.

Then when we are in port, we do active things and he has a great time. So there is something for each of you to enjoy.

Cruising is a wonderful thing! Enjoy it.

In October my Husband and I will be on Magic for a 7 day Western Caribbean.

The husband is foreseeing being very bored on sea days.

He works in swimming pools and will not get in public pools. To many horror stories of what happens in pools. Yes the chemicals kill it....no he does not care how "clean" it is.

He is outside all day sun bathing will not be fun for him.

He is not a big gambler.

I am not sure what there is to do on a cruise ship. I heard there are shows. But I assume they are all at night. I don't want him to be bored. I can take a book and hang out in the sun and be fine as long as I get a drink once and a while.

Congratulations on getting to take your belated honeymoon:hearteyes: I think some other posters may have missed the bolded part - if the perception that all there is to do on a ship is drinking at the pool/laying in the sun or gambling in the casino was true many of us wouldn't want to cruise. Here are some of my thoughts:

-We aren't pool or casino people either but love being on the water, so walking the outer decks enjoying the sea air is a good way for us to start the morning.

-We usually work out twice a week at home, and try to incorporate this on sea days on a cruise.

-We like to explore the ship and see the different areas (or at least my husband humors me) and this can take a few hours depending on the size of the ship

-You can sleep in (or take multiple naps) if you had a long night or want extra energy for the coming evening

-Trivia and some other shows can be fun (we like to listen to karaoke), even if you are casually observing vs. participating

-The arcade may have "power hours" where games are 1/2 price (or 2 plays for price of 1) if you enjoy those games.

-You said he doesn't do pools, but would slides appeal if your ship has them?

-Mini golf or other sports

-It's your honeymoon:hearteyes: :*

-Are there things he wishes he could do if he had the time/no distractions (reading, writing, etc)? Here's his chance.

I hope you have a great cruise!

My husband does not sit in the sun, or gamble much but absolutely loves cruising. Our day starts with coffee on the Lido while many are still sleeping. We will often change into walking clothes and do a couple of miles on the walking track while it is still early. Then, it is time for a morning beverage and sea day brunch. We spend the rest of the day watching the ocean from our balcony, reading, chatting and wandering the ship. There can be a steakhouse cooking demonstration, drink tasting, ice carving, towel folding, trivia or music throughout the ship and we will often join in such activities. There is lunch to be had, ice cream to snack on, tea at 3 pm and of course, a nap is always welcome. Alchemy opens by 2 and we will stop by at various times to have them craft us drinks and to chat. Before we know it, it is evening and time for a shower, dinner, and then comedy, a show or the piano bar...and of course more Alchemy. Some nights we will enjoy a leisurely dinner at a specialty restaurant. When we are ready to wind down, we head back to our balcony for some star gazing. It's really a lovely way to spend the day and there is no way to cram all these things I have listed in one day!

We take a nap.it does get boring on seaways I don't care what the joyous cheerleaders say.thats why if there are more than 2 seaways I look elsewhere.

As you can see, everyone is different. Just as scpirate recognizes that for them sea days are boring and wisely look for port intensive cruises, others of us find that sea days can be amazing - I don't care what the negative nellies say;p

Life is often busy and stressful at home, so a few days to do anything offered - or just nothing at all - can be a treat. Many ships have activities you need to do yourself (gym, ropes course, slides, mini golf, rock wall, etc.), so if you are not interested in the what the ship has to offer and aren't content to do something passive like reading or people watching then it might be boring.

Being bored on a cruise ship - sea day or port day - just doesn't compute for me, so I have to wonder if they aren't bored on port days too:confused:. Hoping you have a great trip and can enjoy some "down time" without boredom:)

I also do not gamble, seldom drink, never sit in the sun or go near the pool. This is what I do enjoy doing all day.

Sitting on my balcony and having breakfast. Frankly, I could sit on my balcony all day, but I never do.

Trivia happens all day and we often hit several of those along with games like scattergories

Around noon, activities will start on the Lido deck by the pool like Miss Carnival, Ice Carving and the Fun ship Family Games. I enjoy these activities from a nice shaded seat and it is catered.

Bingo is happening in the main show lounge about this time if interested

Afternoon Tea at 3pm

Steam room and hot tub in the spa before getting ready for dinner

Dinner

After dinner you have multiple choices

Four Comedy shows, two rated PG and two Adult

Main stage show twice at 8pm and 10pm

High Seas Karaoke all evening

Late at night the Carnival Quest

If none of this was available though, I would still enjoy cruising and just being with my wife and family together.

Surprisingly to me, on my 2nd cruise I learned to relax. I'm getting better and better at it.

AM...drink coffee, watch sunrise, maybe talk to another early riser, wake up wife, eat b-fast, maybe gym or walk, people watch, shower, etc.

Lunch...then maybe some trivia, ice carving, listening to music on Lido in the shade, etc (whatever little show they have). I go to less and less of these each cruise. Sit somewhere and watch the ocean & people, look through some of the shops & pictures etc.

MDR and plenty of show options after that.

I did not read every post on here so someone may have suggested it already, but you mentioned gaming:cool:. Did you know that there is an arcade on board you could save your money up like people do for the casino, but use it in the arcade. I'm not sure but if you will be playing a lot they may have some kind of plan to make it cheaper, just a thought. My last cruise 16' they had some pretty cool up to date video games.

awesome! thank you all for the suggestions.

I can not wait to drink and explore the ship. I think the arcade will be a fun spot and I want him to come with me to the Casino. I have never been to one. It is getting closer and closer! I cant wait!

I suggest you find a new husband, because your current one sounds like a bump on a log. I would leave him at home and bring somebody who knows how to have a good time. Seriously, why would you go on a cruise if drinking and partying on a boat is considered as boring to you??

Believe it or not, there’s far more to a crisis than “drinking and partying”. I’m not into either much myself. Other than a glass of wine or two, I don’t drink. But I love cruises and being at sea.
