So serious question.....how do you get an upgrade....Just read a post and she called, RC stated no upgrades available and a couple days later they were upgraded from a Junior Suite to a Crown Loft?????

I might be a little jealous but I am also a little angry....

Never in my 20 years of cruising with Royal have I ever been offered and upgrade on any of the 19 cruises with them.... I am a couple nights shy of Diamond Plus and this really makes me sad.... so what do you have to do to get an upgrade...

All you can do is call C&A and tell them to set up your profile for an automatic upgrade. This does not mean you will get an upgrade, or even if it will increase the probability of getting an upgrade. It's just the only action you can take related to getting an upgrade.

The Upgrade Fairy only puts in very rare appearances.

Her ugly stepsister, the Upsell Fairy, sometimes calls.

My profile has always been "automatic upgrade"...again 20 years and 19 cruises and NOTHING..

I actually like NCL "upgrade bid" at least everyone is given the opportunity..

Join the club. There are 3-5 thousand people on every ship that want to be upgraded

I wonder what the secret criteria is for an upgrade opportunity as I don’t believe its completely random.

I’m thinking maybe price you paid on your current cabin or maybe your previous onboard spends or casino activity. There must be some profiling that occurs or perhaps its just my over active imagination.

My parents had me convinced that Santa Claus, on Christmas Eve, would present them with a bill for the toys he brought. Less-fortunate kids got toys from him for free, but because we could afford it we paid for them. It was their handy way of keeping us kids on a budget when perusing the Sears Wish Book to make a list.

I offer this seemingly totally irrelevant story because while we only have an 8-cruise history, when the Fairy flitted her way to our TA it was an offer to bump us from a GS to an OS not for free, though for what was a ridiculously small amount (under $200 I seem to recall), right about a week before departure. I imagine if we'd passed, and anyone else in a GS had passed, then MAYBE a free upgrade would've been had by someone; but rest assured we were on that posthaste. Indeed, our TA was feverishly trying to get in touch via every phone number or e-mail at her disposal - giving me the impression there was an "Early Bird Getting Worms" factor attached.

I imagine they then performed the same game with our now-available GS to folks in JS's, or maybe one of them got an upgrade.

The funnier thing was that OS had a minor plumbing issue that then paid for about ⅓ of our next cruise, and our Internet package...

I would agree with you that there are many factors at work here and it would definitely include the price that was paid for the cabin. It would make the most sense from a financial point of view to upgrade the person that paid the highest amount for their room. That way when you sell the cabin that they were in you have received the greatest amount of money for the 2 cabins.

We’re Diamond Plus also never been visited by the upgrade fairy. Did get one up sell call a few cruises back for $400 to upgrade from a balcony to a JS which we did.

A friend at work did their first ever cruise for their honeymoon and were upgraded free of charge from a balcony to JS. Never sailed before.

Guess it worked... they’ve sailed 3-4 times since and will only book a JS.

Would like to feel bad for you, however, with over 100 cruises I have never been upgraded or received a call from the ugly stepsister either. If you ever find out how the system really works, please post. Would like at least one upgrade before I hit 200 cruises.

It also helps if you sail on a larger ship with many suites and during the slowest weeks of the year like the first week in December, the second week in January or to the Caribbean during the height of hurricane season.

In our 19 RCCL cruises we’ve been upgraded twice, once from a balcony with a rediculous room number (1666) to a JS on the Explorer of the Seas and once from a JS to a GS on the Allure of the Seas. The JS upgrade was on our 2nd cruise and the GS upgrade was on our 10th. We did book a couple of GS’s after that upgrade, so I guess it worked on us! No clue why we were selected for either of them, prices paid were about average for those sailings, both bookings were made through online TA’s. Both upgrades were in September, so maybe those boats were less full then normal sailings so upgrades were more available?

What is ridiculous about the cabin number?

I do not know why, but this cracked me up. :')

I so agree. We received the blessing of the upgrade fairy, probably 20 years ago, once. The ugly step sister appeared this year, and we went from an OV to a balcony for $100 a person. Best deal and we enjoyed the balcony!
