Upgrade Fairy

I wonder what the secret criteria is for an upgrade opportunity as I don’t believe its completely random.

I’m thinking maybe price you paid on your current cabin or maybe your previous onboard spends or casino activity. There must be some profiling that occurs or perhaps its just my over active imagination.

I think maybe if you are a new or fairly new cruiser with them and only book ocean view or interior they may try and tempt you into booking balconies by showing you what you are missing. The only time we had an upgrade was three years ago, had a guaranteed interior booked and we got allocated a central park balcony.

So serious question.....how do you get an upgrade....Just read a post and she called, RC stated no upgrades available and a couple days later they were upgraded from a Junior Suite to a Crown Loft?????

I might be a little jealous but I am also a little angry....

Never in my 20 years of cruising with Royal have I ever been offered and upgrade on any of the 19 cruises with them.... I am a couple nights shy of Diamond Plus and this really makes me sad.... so what do you have to do to get an upgrade...

If it makes you feel better there are some passengers, like me, that will never get a call from the Upgrade Fairy. Those passengers are the ones that have to have accessible cabins. The majority of the time all the accessible cabins are fully booked 12-15 months in advance. On the upside we will never get a call from the Upsell Fairy either.

I Had one visit by this fairy. i once booked lowest ocean view fare for a week long Disney Cruise (my first and only ). It was an amazing price during spring break (I hit the jackpot with even securing this price). I then called them days before we set sail and asked for an upgrade. They promised me a Garuntee balcony for only $200 for The whole cabin (I forgot to mention it was for two adults and two small kids). Not bad I thought !

When we checked in we were upgraded to this large balcony suite next to Owners suite. I don’t remember what it was called but it was huge.

Not to rub salt in the OP's wound (or maybe a little ;p) but when we got a free upgrade to balcony we weren't even Diamond yet.

Ummm, I beat you. I was emerald, and I went from a balcony, to a JS guarantee. I was given the Owners Suite. I paid the price of a balcony. The JS guarantee was because of a price reduction, and I chose to move up and paid a small amount of around $50.00 for the upgrade. (About a year ago in case someone asks)

Just once, and I think it was before we became Diamond Plus, the upgrade fairy met us at check-in at Port Canaveral. Our only clue was that we didn't recognize our cabin number. We enjoyed the Junior Suite, especially being able to have coffee in the morning without getting dressed and going out....or guessing what time we'd like Room Service to bring it.

Now my husband uses a mobility scooter so we aren't in the market for upgrades, but we've truly never been disappointed with the accommodations in an accessible balcony. I think RCI plans those cabins for utmost convenience. The only thing we'd like is to have automated doors on Oasis class like they do on Radiance class. It's so much easier to go in and out when I don't have to try to hold the door open for him without being in the way. I recently read on CC that you can ask for a door wedge, so we'll do that in the future.

What we miss most because of needing an accessible cabin is the ability to grab a last-minute bargain, because accessible cabins are usually all booked far in advance. I wish there were some kind of computer program that would notify us if someone cancels an accessible cabin near sailing date, but I know that that sounds harder than other things (that would benefit more people) that their IT Department can't accomplish.

Sorry I strayed a little off subject.

Idk how they do it but based on my spending onboard I “ don’t deserve it” still got it

-majesty from ocean view to grand suite -/free/platinum or gold

-freedom from interior to balcony/ free/platinum

-independence from interior to ocean view /free/emerald

-oasis from interior to Central Park/free/emerald

The rest has been upsell

We don’t drink or spent onboard more than 50$, no casino, no tours, nada. So I don’t really know what are their criteria for the upgrades.

In the upgrade process I believe they look at location of your original room and how easy it will be to quickly re-sell it. That being said I try to always book a cabin in the middle. I’ve had three upsell offers. 2 on carnival both from balcony’s one aft one middle to ocean suites. Took one refused the second. I’m sailing allure in a few months and had a JS booked with an extended balcony for $2600. Two months ago I received a call to upgrade to a crown loft suite for $900 total. I jumped on it figuring I’d never ever pay full price for that suite. We do have around $1500 in ancillaries purchased already for the cruise so not sure if that had anything to do with it. I’m going to be emerald if it makes any difference. And it was the second time I booked a junior suite.

Got a free upgrade from JS to GS this year on Mariner. Total cabin price was $1500 for 15 days. May have even included tips.

While I am happy that you all got upgrades, it makes me still feel bitter (the salt in the wounds really sting). I am at the point where I feel that Royal does not care about me (or my 19 cruises and the thousand upon thousands I have spent onboard, in casino and on cabins....I am done with being "loyal to Royal" as stated earlier I like how NCL has the "upgrade bid" and I think my next couple of cruises (after the ones I already have booked) will be there. Waiting to hit "diamond plus" so my "little one" will be able to utilize their "crown and anchor" program. Maybe they will do good by her, as I feel used...

Keep those upgrades coming for the first time/gold/emerald cruisers and enjoy!!!!

Sorry you feel this way. 30+ cruises on royal these past 4years and not one upgrade or upsell. I wish it was I that received these upgrades. But now I just book the crown loft suites we enjoy when we sail oasis class. When we sail other class ships, we book whatever cabin is the best value for us. Could be anywhere from inside to suites. Depends on ship, itinerary and price.

Hoping for an upgrade on our serenade cruises in Feb. If we get an upgrade great and if not I get the cabin that I paid for.

My son loves his d+ status (not really any more perks than gold for kids)and hope your little one will enjoy it. He is of that age that loves the bridge tours, galley tours, reserved seating etc.

Sorry to go off topic. I have a hypothetical question, when my son reaches pinnacle, will his kids(our grandkids) get d+ status? I am just asking as my son is only 12 years old right now and it will be many years before he is ready for a family.

Thanks

Maybe you should just book the cabin you want upfront. Royal usually has a nice balcony discount for their Diamond members

Be happy that you don't have medical issues that require you to have an accessible cabin. Accessible cabin = no upgrades; no last minute cheap deals and no GYT cabins. For some no accessible cabin = no holiday

You may need to find a different type of holiday.

Some folks can't travel at all.

30 cruises with Royal and the only upgrade was an inside guarantee to an outside, no cost. We book the room we want but it sure would be nice to upgrade for free or little cost.

I do need to call C and A as I I have no idea what my upgrade preferences are and don’t know how to look or change them.

If someone knows chime in.

You have to call. You can no longer see them or change them online
