Edge (and Apex?) issues...

Problem is that  on EDGE if you cannot afford a  regular balcony suite, the stateroom  options are fairly  limited.,

Sunset Verandas are few,  and  cost  a bunch more than the IV; other balconies are  hull balconies...very small with round cut out.

So if we don't book the IV, where do we go on EDGE, other than ocean view window or inside?  We hope they keep regular balconies  on the M and S Class ships..and  find a way going forward  to improve the IVs

It it would be interesting to see a poll on those that had sailed in an IV and who would consider booking that same cabin again for another Caribbean cruise 🤔. After reading many of the reviews, and discounting those that haven’t already experienced the IV yet or those that have relatives working onboard, many appear to only recommend them for cold weather itineraries. Perhaps a poll would show a different outcome?

I too hope they don’t change the regular balconies on the M& S class.

Does anyone know if there is  any bar service in the theater?  I heard the seats have cup/ glass  holders...

Yes, there is bar service in the theatre. And there are cup holders.

The shops on board were ridiculously up-scale and horribly over priced. We bought NOTHING on board!

We had a tough time trying to find something to buy with our OBC.

I applaud Celebrity for being creative and trying something different, and the ship was beautiful. We had a great time and cruise. Still, I think it would be a great idea to have shops and or things that fit different budgets. I think a good example of this can be found in RCI Oasis class ships. They have some upscale stuff and also regular reasonably priced things.

Why are there only 15 to 17 actual reviews on Vtcruising spreadsheet under The Edge at the Celebrity Cruise Forum ?   She asked for our input to create that spreadsheet.

Vt’s spreadsheet is specifically for stateroom/suite reviews. The cabin spreadsheets aka “stickies” for m-class and s-class ships are so helpful that VT kindly created one for the Edge class. Hopefully, most people will post their cabin reviews there when they have time.

The Edge, to me is about “Change.”  It’s takes time to people to adapt to changes.

Do you remember when computers were first introduced to the General Public and How large and heavy that Black & White monitor was that CPU weigh a ton?  Now look at todays computers 💻 . They are light weight some are called a lap top. They are in high definition color. You can use it talk to long distance, make graphic designs, you can even carry it around with you. etc., etc.

Here is another example of change do you remember that big heavy cell phone and what functions it had. Now you have a Smartphone, that is a exactly a mini computer, you can take photos, it’s a GPS, you can even call Russia, or Aruba on it. etc.,

Lets give The Edge a chance .

Do you remember Coke Classic and the Edsel?  How did they work out?  Let's not stick our head in the sand and try to convince ourselves that there are not inherent problems with features on this ship, specifically the IV balcony, that don't suit our needs.  We just need to book other options that better meet our needs and Celebrity will need to figure out how to better market and price Edge class ships.  If others like the Edge, that's great.  Enjoy your cruise.  But for many of us, this ship appears to be a miss.  Don't hate us, but thank us.  Edge prices will come down because the demand for the ship will decrease.

So I guess we do not need color televisions, cable networks, the internet, smartphones  or laptops computer or jet commercial air planes? Without changes their would be no CC Board and we could not post on this subject.

Let’s hope Celebrity will reconsider some of The Edge shortcomings and will fix these problems with their future E Class ships build.

I just hope that the price of the other Celebrity ships aren’t elevated when they have gone through their Revolution.

For pre or post dinner dinners, there really is only one suitable Bar/lounge IMO and that is the very overcrowded Martini Bar where it is hard to get a seat.  The Club environment is not inviting and other activities were being held there per-dinner. Later in the evening it becomes a nightclub.  The Eden has the Edenists running around, and while I did not experience incense burning on the Dec9-16 cruise, I did read about that.  Not good for people with allergies or other breathing issues.

Going outside after one is showered and dressed for dinner for a drink is not something I want to do. I, too, missed a space like the Ensemble or Rendevous.  And they took away the forward Sky Lounge to put the Suite Retreat in.  They were quiet venues where you can sit, have a drink or two, and some pleasant conversation.  This is where the EDGE is severely lacking. And, I would never think of the casino, or the ocean view bars as a pre or post dinner lounge to get a drink.  Cafe el Bacio is limited in what they serve as we found out. And , I too don't know where the Resort Bar is.

Your TA is on the mark with her assessment.

Interestingly, in one of the more educat(ive?)ed reviews about the Edge, the reviewer uses this sentiment/recommendation:

"My advice to Celebrity is to consider adding more lounges to the upcoming sister ships. Ditch a couple of those extra-pay restaurants for some unique lounges."

Initially, I thought that this is a good idea for fixing the obvious socially inept design flaw... but then, just by eyeballing the financials behind the two options, I thought that specialty restaurants should still win the battle - if you encounter upcharge PLUS everybody would STILL order drinks in there... At least this is an even-steven thing... so - no, I don't think that X is going to change this.

Feel sorry, though.

Going on edge Sunday.  I hve read revies and have seen youtyvideos.  We are in an infinite verand stateroom.  Thus far I see storage will be a real problem. Miss the cabinet above the bed and small closet.  We travel heavy as we will be crossing the following week.  Yes we do laundry, however the storage is limited.  It would have been nice to have the trundle bed area used as a drawer if you don’t need another bed.  We also enjoy breakfast on the balcony which isn’t going to happen due to the small balcony and lack of a real table.  The price for the cruise for this small, really window view cabin is obscene

We love celebrity and if this ship isn’t for us will sail on the solstice and milly class

hope those ships aren’t ruined

What exactly  is the change that EDGE is about? ( other than seeking a revenue stream from  a new generation of  contemporary cruisers)

EDGE  promos said  it  would " leave the future behind " .  To date it is more a retro trip to the past. The  regular cabins have 80's dorm like furnishings,  Eden entertainment is retro flower power, etc. Light shows in the atrium .

Seems  everything old is new again for EDGE! Waiting for a macrame class!

So far as reported:

Smaller  verandas w window in lieu of outdoor balcony,  wrong sized  veranda furniture...no table for  breakfast on veranda,  AC issues relating to the veranda window being  open

 no quiet music lounges, lack of  inside bars/ slow service,  no dedicated wine venue;

shows in the theater that folks walk out of..( bad material, too loud ,  very bright lighting )

loud central atrium with noise spilling into dining venues  and Cafe Bacio, that have no walls sep them off,

wasting of the beautiful large EDEN  space with wierd performances

The club not always used as a trad  lounge style club, no trad dancing.,.mostly disco and role playing games,,

a  beautiful rooftop area that is often too windy to enjoy and has no bar area other than Sunset around the corner

The private pool deck area  apparently competes with a walkway on that side of the ship. No band/ event stage at the pool area

The odd programming choices  not a big hit so far modifying trivia to an unpopular format,  no printed sudoku, crosswords  or Intl news summaries,  How many want to learn Haiku..again! No morning stretch or group walk.

Onboard  App not all can access,  no Attention to Detail cards?? limited printed materials other than ads

Most all of these changes/ shortcomings can easily be fixed by bring true Modern Upscale ideas  to EDGE.

The restaurants and 4 MDR concept seem to be getting very good reviews as well as the staff throught the ship.  Maybe Celebrity should modify its "changes" and really make this beautiful ship a  true winner!

We will be onboard very soon.... will enjoy the restaurants and spa, thermal suites, Solarium, gym , any quiet and fun spaces we find on board, good music we hope, but I think the experience can become so much more that has been so far reported back by others,.

Seems that Celebrity deliberately reduced the volume of true bar/conversation areas.

Sooo, the question is why.

Considering the past year of various threads stating the difficulty in getting a drink in the drink package era (attributed mostly to cut back in staff)  - I believe that Celebrity has limited the physical venues to acquire drinks - to increase profits.

So the cut back in staff combined with a reduction in physical venues dispensing alcohol = winner Celebrity.

Celebrity already has your $ - so no need to provide alcohol.

It is beyond brilliant and the CEO is smiling all the way to the bank, with guests $.

Interesting perspective but I doubt Celebrity would design a ship making it inconvenient for those with beverage packages to save money through offering fewer bars.  What about those passengers without beverage packages?  Is their money no good?  I am on Edge in a few weeks with a Premium beverage package and I'm pretty sure I will find a drink when I want one!

Yeah I’d have to concur.  Percentage of passengers with drink packages probably under 30%

How did you reach that conclusion?  only insides wouldn't have received one upon booking. There are far more suites and IVs on this ship than the rest of the fleet. So yes, OBC would have been an option but I'd be willing to bet it's far more than 30% that have a drink package on an average 7 day Caribbean cruise

“Only eight to 10 percent of passengers purchase unlimited booze packages”

Quote from Bloomberg January 2018z. Look it up

Is that percentage quoted just for Celebrity??  Other lines offer modified plans, some offer none so unless this is specific to Celebrity it is apple to oranges.

Sure is apples to apples, with both being Royal Caribbean and neither being Celebrity.

My upcoming Royal Caribbean cruise cost me and my wife over $1,200.00 for beverage packages. My last Celebrity cruises included the beverage packages, built into the price. (of course they aren't free, just marketing)

Lots more would have them if they were included and not an extra $1.200.00 like on RCCL/
