FL proposes Beach smoking ban, will Royal follow lead?

I went to a casino resort a few years back and they had a smoking section in the casino, but it was completely enclosed. Only one way in and out through glass doors. The result was that the rest of the casino and resort was blissfully smoke free. Since then, I’ve wondered why casinos on cruise ships couldn’t be designed or retrofitted in a similar fashion.

This would keep the smoke and smell contained, give smokers a chance to continue gambling, while allowing the rest of the non-smoking population to enjoy a smoke free casino and surroundings. In the meantime, we’ve  learned to steer clear of the casino and anything near it, but the way some ships are designed with completely open spaces, some of which you need to cross in order to get from point A to point B, it’s almost impossible to fully avoid these areas.

Actually the new ships can be.  For example, on the new Spectrum of the Seas, they created a casino space for the "high rollers" and "Golden Suite Class".  This is completely away, and a separate area than the main Casino.  It is on the side of the ship, so it can easily be vented outside.  If they can do this, they can make it into a smokers Casino, to cover the 15.5% of smokers on the ship.

Get this, on last April sailing on Harmony, in the CK, someone was vaping at one of the tables in the back during dinner. I told the CK manager. The CK mgr has a conversation with the vaper. Never saw it occur again but one must assume if they do it at dinner, they most likely are vaping in cabin/balcony.

We saw quite a bit of vaping, fortunately not the obnoxiously huge clouds that can be produced, but smaller ones on the Promenade, in the Schooner bar, and a few other places like the theaters.

One would hope Royal would do all they can to prevent this activity.

The main reason for the proposed law is because of the smoker slobs littering the beach with their cigarette butts. For some reason smokers don't think that's littering

Rather a butt than a straw. At least the butts are biodegradable

As long as these products are legal, the best solution is to give smokers a place to smoke, both indoors and outdoors, away from the non-smokers.  A self-contained area, glassed-off area in the casino is a start. A well-ventilated cigar/smoking lounge is another.  Contrary to what another poster said about smokers being "coddled" by RCCL, the opposite is true.  The smoking areas on the ship are extremely limited and seem to shrink each year.  Give them enough space and most people will stop lighting up where it's prohibited (except for the occasion jerk).

On a slight tangent, on Liberty, the smoking area extends all the way into the kiddie pool area. Even my smoking family members felt that was wrong and would not venture to that area.

I’ll never agree that smokers should be provided an indoor area to smoke. Personally, I don’t think they should use the elevator/lift or sit at tables with non-smokers.

That's a big 'IF' right there. I'm OK with keeping smoking outdoors but if you ban it completely then security will be stretched pretty thin chasing down balcony smokers.

It’s very possible the Celebrity might be in our future. However, that really has nothing to do with Royal preventing smoking in the Casino. What about the crew that is forced to work hours and hours in a smoke filled environment? It’s not fair to expose them to second hand smoke.

I agree with banning all indoor smoking. Works for Celebrity. But you've got to be kidding about elevators and table arrangements.:classic_rolleyes:

You have as much of a chance of cruise lines prohibiting smoking as the casinos, especially in Las Vegas, do. Slim to none. Too much revenue to lose.

That’s the common line smokers use. The Casinos in the NE are surviving quite well after banning smoking. Actually, many say they are actually doing better.

Those are mostly the ones that use the Casino as a smoking lounge and come out saturated with smoke. Once they eliminate smoking indoors, it shouldn’t be as much a problem.

That wasn't my point. Your comment ,"Personally, I don’t think they should use the elevator/lift or sit at tables with non-smokers" is extreme. I don't know what you've been smoking.

My DD has some kind of spray spritzer thingy that she carries with her & uses on her hair & clothing. It's not a perfume or cologne but it somehow neutralizes or mask the smell of smoke.  Maybe if the smoking areas had automatic dispensers that you had to walk thru when exiting? 😉

I do get the point of people reeking of cigarette smoke. It's not pleasant. It didn't occur to me that smoking indoors, people reek more.  Point taken.

That’s easy to answer, NOTHING.  There would be no need to prevent smokers who smoke in the Casino from saturating themselves with smoke and then walking into the MDR or elevator, if the Casino was non smoking.  I’ve had smokers at our MDR table, between courses, excuse themselves to run out and have a smoke in the Casino and then run back in for the next course and bringing the stench of smoke on their person for all those at the table to enjoy.

Obviously you haven't cruised with Celebrity.

Different clientele, maybe?  I haven't sailed Celebrity but I understand it appeals to an older, more mature demographic.

After decades of declining, smoking - especially vaping - is rising among younger people.  The kind of people Royal seeks to attract. I don't see Royal banning smoking.

At the risk of going off-topic, as recreational marijuana use become more wide spread and the 15.5% figure rises, I wonder how cruise lines will react.

That’s a great question. Anyone who has been around MJ, inhaling or otherwise, know that a seed and stalks can pop out a burn. If it can burn a hole in clothing or cloth, it certainly can create a fire. lol

We cruise with both RC and Celebrity. I don't see any Cruise line banning smoking completely. Celebrity just bans all inside smoking. Even RC has been restrictive on their indoor smoking.
