Norwegian Jewel Family Suite 11530. STAY AWAY

I am currently on the Norwegian Jewel family suite room 11530.  This is a 20000 dollar suite for six people 13 day Southeast Asia cruise. They put this suite on the 11th floor under the pool area that they designated as a smoking area (pool is on 12th floor). Day and night can hear scraping noise as people moving furniture above. Can’t sleep in or sleep at night. Called concierge manny times but can’t stop the noise. Stay away from this room at all costs. I will probably just change cruise lines after this!

...or... you can do the appropriate level of research before you drop 20,000 on a cabin on deck 11 which will pretty much certainly be underneath something or other. "They put us in", did you not choose your cabin?

No kidding! They didn’t look where their cabin was beforehand so now they want to play the blame game?

Not obvious on your first time Jewel ships' deck 11.  Our first time we booked a deck 11, same thing.  I had no idea that the deck above would be so noisy.  I would never have imagined that these expensive cabins would not have been noise insulated better.   So unless you somehow just stumble onto reports of these being noisy cabins, for your first booking on deck 11, you just don't know.   I now have a good idea of the quieter areas of deck 11 to book.   But I fault NCL for not having planed better when the ship was built.

If sleeping is the only issue, just grab some ear plugs. If they work for me with a snoring husband in my face every night, I'm sure it would have muffled sporadic scraping a deck away.

I  was in 11530 on Gem , and I made the error in not  carefully checking the deck plan--

Yes  the room was noisy from above --scraping and  dragging of chairsetc.. 

 

I suggest  not staying on the  11  floor at all

First, you made a mistake in not reading the deck plan before booking this cabin and then you want NCL to tell other passengers to stop doing what they are doing while enjoying their cruise, because you can't sleep because of your mistake.

An examination of 11530 shows it under the pool deck, a few feet away from the fitness center.  Other deck 11 cabins have similar  or easily identifiable problems, under the galley, under the buffet, kids club, teen club, etc., BUT others are clearly under less noisy places like the library, photo studio, etc.  There are plenty of reviews on this website and one can find that those under La Cucina get good reviews, for example.  Reviews of aft-facing cabins under Great Outdoors are more excited about the view than upset about noise, if any.  You just have to do your homework.

I was in this cabin for Alaska 2016 and would suggest ear plugs.  I’ve been in cabins where a baby next door has cried all night or something creaked constantly.  Vacations can be this way unfortunately, get the plugs and try to enjoy the remainder of your vacation.

I was always amazed that the more expensive mini-suites and suites are on deck 11 on the Jewel class ships.  It would have made a lot more sense to have those suites on deck 10 and the cheaper balcony cabins on deck 11.  When you pay big bucks for a suite you should expect some quiet.  This was a hard and expensive lesson to learn for jonburge412.

Hotel manager is "working on it".  All they have to do is move smoking section elsewhere.  I don't blame smokers.  Ncl should not have people congregating over any room at all hours, let alone a suite.  Poor planning.

Sorry you are not going to like this - but there were 9 other 2BR suites to pick from and you happened to

pick the one under the Pool deck with the assigned smoking section (port side on the pool deck is the

assigned smoking area on some ships). I doubt that NCL is going to move the assigned smoking section.

Most ships sail with the suites sailing fully booked it is going to be difficult for the Hotel Director to do much.

Smoking on your floor(deck) is of course not allowed but the smoke you are experiencing is coming from

the open windows of the pool deck drifting down to your balcony. Knowing more about the location of the

cabin you are booking is essential to satisfaction in cruising. Regretfully you are not going to have that

experience with or on your first cruise. I wised up on my cruise with Carnival - never under a pool deck

with musical chairs furniture maintenance going on at all hours.

There were possible options for the 2BR suite both more expensive - the 2BR Haven suite and the Garden Villa.

 

Shoulda coulda woulda - better booking location on your next cruise - research is cheap free and the results

I agree that the OP should have looked at the deck plans before booking.

 

I also think that NCL could have noice insulated the cabins under pooldecks, and other noicy places, better so that it shouldn't be a problem!

For those of you faulting the OP for 'picking' a bad room.  Someone will be in that room.  What would  you tell that person?  Quit blaming the victim.

They moved the smoking section. Took care of 70% of the noise. We still hear once in a week hike but I applaud the effort. I agree with everyone that I should have researched better. However when you book an expensive suite you should be able to assume that it will not be in a noisy cabin.

Dollars to doughnuts the deck 12 smoking section was moved to another area on the same deck.  Since deck 11 is all passenger cabins, what unsuspecting cabins are now the recipient of the noise, courtesy of OP's complaint and NCL's resolution?

My advice to you alwayscheck deck plans before  booking ...type in dec kplans and name of ship on Google ...look carefully ...whats around ..below or above  your cabin  .

itis always best to be sandwiched between pax floors ..not under Lido deck, near theatre or music venue 

i oncebooked a cabin above the casino ..exvept it was right above casino band that played till 1 am every day ...you could have sworn they were in my cabin ...lol ...ship was booked solid ....so I had to grin and bear and stay out till after 1 AM 

so now I look and check ....

In my experience it's been next-door passengers and their unauthorized smoking or loud music that have been far, far worse than staying one level below the pool deck.

I wanted to book a suite on the star to get priority disembarkation in St. Petersburg. I was shocked the remaining suites were under common areas and needed to choose a balcony cabin, since we have a 3 year old who can’t deal with that noise.  I booked 6 weeks out, so ncl probably lost the ability to sell a suite because they chose to put them in loud locations.
