miched Posted January 22, 2022 #1 Share Posted January 22, 2022 It is still hard to twist off the caps on the aluminum water bottles? Happy cruising 🌊🚢🇺🇸🌅
Rare DaKahuna Posted January 22, 2022 #2 Share Posted January 22, 2022 I found some were easy and others were a little hard. Turning the bottle upside down and giving the top a couple if hits on a solid surface seemed to help with the more troublesome ones. Also using a washcloth to towel to grip the cap helped too. Roxydog15 Posted January 22, 2022 #3 Share Posted January 22, 2022 We haven't cruised since they switched to those bottles, but DaKahuna gave me an idea. I may bring one of those round rubber sheets that are used for opening jars!
BettyCruiser Posted January 22, 2022 #4 Share Posted January 22, 2022 They are still hard to open. I got around it by ordering Evian since I had the premium package.

The BTs and most servers will open them for you. Their hands have probably became calloused. Happy cruising 🌊🚢🇺🇸🌅
Roxydog15 Posted January 22, 2022 #6 Share Posted January 22, 2022 Good point, pulling out that sheet in a dining venue would be a bit tacky. I will reserve that for the cabin and excursions and just ask the server to use their expertise to assist!
dreams_of_travel Posted January 23, 2022 #7 Share Posted January 23, 2022 I'll have to remember to use a washcloth. I cut a finger open trying to open one on my December cruise. Fortunately I didn't need stitches. I was very annoyed though. They are very tough to open, some worse than others.
Rare Jim_Iain Posted January 23, 2022 #8 Share Posted January 23, 2022 I found them very difficult to open. Also the San Pelligrino glass bottles were so tough on a couple occasions I had to ask a bartender to open them for me.
Arizona Wildcat Posted January 23, 2022 #9 Share Posted January 23, 2022 With arthritic hands I simply ask for assistance. The rubber gripper is a great idea. I use one at home for all sorts of stuff. Jim or Iain maybe you can open mine on the Iceland cruise?
Hickeyclan1 Posted January 23, 2022 #10 Share Posted January 23, 2022 Amazon has some great collapsible water bottles. We plan on bringing those and pouring the water from the aluminum cans into the bottles.

Rare keesar Posted January 23, 2022 #13 Share Posted January 23, 2022 Many seniors have problems opening these bottles. Goes with the territory. I will be doing exercises to strengthen my hands and wrist. Also, may bring along some pliers to open those bottles just in case. However, I may get sent to the 'naughty room' if the pliers are detected in my baggage. I remember those gross water cartons from my trips in Alaska on Solstice. My mother who was 79 at the time was sent to the naughty room for bringing a 'weapon' onboard a pair of scissors she brought she told them it's for cutting the tags off her clothes.

marieps Posted January 23, 2022 #16 Share Posted January 23, 2022 DW found a metallic odor when drinking from the bottle. And they're hard to open. We're not fans.

I was one of the first ones off the ship and checked out two tables of confiscated items. I could not believe there was so much stuff. There was a sword, knives, scissors, candles, toy guns, etc. Appliances included coffee makers, knitting needles, many irons, steamers, etc. There was a set of handcuffs and not sure why someone would bring those on a cruise....

Interestingly, by the time we got to Cozumel, they were handing out plastic bottles.

I've heard of people attempting to bring all those things on their cruises before but the sword is new to me! What in the world are people thinking when they're packing?! "Hmm, better pack this sword in case the ship gets stormed by pirates. I knew this thing would come in handy some day!"

I bring a pair of sewing scissors (maybe 3-inch blades) and they haven't been confiscated. Sometimes one needs a pair of scissors. 😇

miched Posted January 23, 2022 Author #23 Share Posted January 23, 2022 In Alaska people would buy Ulu Knives in the ports. They are considered a weapon and confiscated and were not returned by that cruise. One enterprising local would stand by the ship and act like a Good Samaritan telling them he would mail the knives If they gave him their name and address plus $10 to cover the shipping costs I wonder how many time those knives have been resold? Rare BennyBrun Posted January 23, 2022 #24 Share Posted January 23, 2022 Yes difficult to open and slightly dangerous when the thread breaks off and it breaks skin. We always use a towel and pre open a few bottles for when I wake up in the middle of the night craving for water.
