Johnny Rockets is an absolute waste for paid dining. It should be included with your RCL cruise fare (except for the milkshakes and other beverages of course). Guy's Burgers is included with your Carnival cruise and those are tasty.

There used to be no additional charge many, many years ago but they changed it sometime around 2006. Started out at $5.95 and has gone up from there. Supposedly it was done because it was becoming a hangout for kids.

I can remember it being a perk. Maybe platinum, maybe lower, you got a burger and a side, coke or milk shake extra. We used to get onion rings as a side.

Of course there used to be a free wine tasting too. A perk.

I'm guessing over 10 years ago. Time flies by to me. I must be getting immune that $12 seems almost reasonable. Prices around here are so crazy. Popeyes charges 25 cents for each thing of ketchup or sauce and you cant choose to remove them. Everything seems up to me.

I dont remember the 5.95, I remember free as a perk for one time at johnny rockets. I'm clearly old.

I indeed noticed again that Carnival offers much more included venues than RCCL and also, paid dining is priced much more reasonable.

We decided for RCCL again since we are very loyal and cruised only once with carnival 15 years ago. We'll see how our experience will be after 6 years being away and can still simply reconsider with every cruise... Not that JR is the deal breaker, but it adds up...

I believe you are right.  I think it was free when it was first introduced into the Royal System.  However, they saw the light and just how popular it was and realized that they were losing $$$$.  JMHO

Even at ~$12.00 it's a bargain.  My last visit to a Johnny Rockets was a few weeks ago in Windsor, Canada, Caesars Casino.  For 4 of us, the bill came to over $120.00, tip not included. Hell, a burger alone is up to ~$14.00

But on Royal, you're paying $12 + the underlying cost of the subsidized "free" meal included with your cruise fare.

I am also starting to realize how weak RCCL F&B range is regarding included outlets and compared to Carnival for instance. On a ship like Harmony being able only to go to windjammer (limited hours) or mini bites on lido deck is something that never made me think about this issue before.

Yes the adding $5.95 was an on/off thing since Voyager's first sailings in late 90's. First Johnny's was Free but too busy/popular on first Ship with added choice of Specialty Restaurant's. Within a month the Cover was added but included a Shake. Months later this was dropped. I was on Voyager #004 back when they listed each Sailing, first cover started and Explorer #008 when it was Free again to eat(but not a Shake). Cost topic was even talked about on Cruise Critic back 22yrs ago

I've already said my peace on this type of thinking in here.  I'll just restate that I don't think it logical to add the price of one luxury item against the price of a none luxury item or compare the price of the two as a loss when purchasing the luxury item.

Agree.  On our recent cruise, I only chose a burger for lunch once, but it was good.  I don't see why anyone would pay more for the same thing elsewhere.

If my limited experience was typical though, burgers were probably the most popular lunchtime choice in Windjammer.

I think I remember receiving BOGOF coupons -- but we have the chain locally, so it isn't anything that tempts us at sea.

It was definitely free when we were first cruising, and they made up the story about "too many teens" to justify starting to charge.

Our very first cruise was on Majesty in 2004 and there was a $4.95 cover charge at JR's. Ive seen a 2011 compass for Majesty and it was still $4.95.

It was 4.95 on Freedom in 2012 as well.  I saw a memory on my Facebook not long ago about Johnny Rockets and the extra cost.   It was delicious and well worth it then.  Id skip it now at 12.00

I remember it being included, then the $5 fee but all the Crown and Anchor coupon books (remember those?) had a coupon for one free meal!

 Sorta..

It's very logical, but perhaps you take exception to the estimated "worth" of the "included" items?

Eg - if I buy nothing onboard, and upgrade nothing, my cruise fare includes some assigned worth for each meal (for discussion's sake, let's say it's $10 for dinner).  So, if I buy the the upcharge JR meal @ $15, then it's logical that the cruiseline is saying that they believe it's actually worth $25.
