Europe ETIAS

I'm looking to find a discussion about this as we have multiple European cruises next year.

Assume several threads will be created once the details are known/finalized and folks start to actually apply. Till then, you may see mention of it in various threads.

The ETIAS is for the EU countries. If visiting the UK or transiting the UK, you will also need their ETAuk electronic visa waiver in the coming years.

But I don't blame them in any way. The US has been requiring this information from them for a few years now.

Please don't call it a visa it's not. It's an electronic approval to travel to the EU. Same as the USA ESTA that USA makes visa waiver countries apply for before travel.

Saying it's a visa is confusing as a visa requires an embassy visit and bring without a passport while it's processed this is not the case here.

ETIAS: There is no start date yet.

It only costs €7pp so it’s hardly a deal breaker and far cheaper than the $21 the USA ESTA costs!
It Will be free for over 70’s and under 18s.

UK ETA: starting November but for some Middle Eastern counties residents only.  No dates yet for other counties to be added.
It will cost £10pp which is only $13 so again; far cheaper than ESTA!

This is the official ETIAS website:
ETIAS (europa.eu)

It´s not a visa but as ESTA (for US) or eTA (for Canada) and ETA (UK) a visa waiver program where you simply preregister for your entry. Compared to the 21 USD for ESTA now the 7 Euro are a bargain for ETIAS. So far there is still no official start date.

ETIAS vs USA ESTA - Same cost per sq mile / km2. (USA is 3x the size of Schengen area) = USA ESTA is fair priced.

UK/Ireland ETA vs USA ESTA - USA is 30x the size of UK/Ireland, ESTA is only 1.6x more = UK ETA is a rip off!  😄

So if we depart from uk and go to eu countries we need both?

Correct, once both schemes are up and running.

Just like a British citizen who wants to visit the US and Canada needs both an ESTA and an eTA.

There are 16 threads on CC with ETIAS in the title. Do a search (everywhere)(title) on ETIAS.

And like this thread, it's unlikely any of those will be resurrected to re-open the discussion once ETIAS is actually a thing - new threads will be created.

Not sure what "discussion" you need. Once it is up and running, you need to pay and register.

In the recent past (COVID), we needed to register and pay when we went to Bermuda and the Bahamas.

Yup, but the OP was looking to find an existing discussion, not a future one. While there may be changes between now and the launch date, reading these threads will give him a good overview.

We'll see if this ever comes to fruition.  There's going to be lots of push back.

No there will not. 😏 it is high time for a system like this. Quid pro quo.

As for EU citizens... when you don´t have ESTA you won´t be allowed to board the plane to the US. The data is sent to the US prior to departure of the plane and the plane can only depart when the US authorities have given their o.k. for departure.

Not sure whether ETIAS or UK ETA are working the same way.

We shouldn't be moaning about the cost. The UK is lucky to be on the visa waiver program 3 eu countries are not to my knowledge. And the refusal rate for the ESTA is like 10k of 1%. No way tourist visa refusal rates are 10k of 1% more like 5, 10 or even higher.

It won't matter in practice. The airline is liable and fined if they land a passenger without the correct documentation. In practice they will check the passenger has the documentation before they accept them for carriage.
