Will I be out of place wearing a tuxedo/dinner jacket on Evening Chic nights?

Recommended Posts

You will stand out in the crowd in a good way. You’re likely to get a few admiring glances and questions about the location of the restrooms - happened to DH every time when he wore his white dinner jacket and red tie/cummerbund (so did the officers), lol.

My husband wears a dinner jacket/tux on every chic night, and I wear a cocktail dress...and he gets all the admiration from passengers and crew! We dress for each other and he looks fabulous!

I totally understand that some don't like to go formal, or chafe at being required to do so, but I dig dressing up and rarely have occasion to nowadays. I'm on Equinix on a TA in April, and think it would be fun to dress formally on Evening Chic nights. I'm sailing solo, so it's just my own dressing preferences I need to consider (not a spouse, partner, etc). How many guys dress in a tux/dinner jacket on Evening Chic nights? How out of place would I be?

I'm inclined to dress to the nines no matter what, just for the fun. But still interested to know how many other passengers do.

Very few passengers do. As far as your question in the title, it’s up to you whether to feel out of place or to feel superior.

I love wearing floor length evening gowns/formal outfits and DH "matches" my formality with a white  tux jacket or a dark tux jacket, with the dark tux trousers for Evening Chic.  After our Sept.  cruise  where we saw 3 other men (may have been more but we didn't see 'em) wearing tuxes, I (DW) figured only Alpha males wore tuxes.  (I was greatly surprised with our recent 21 days cruise over Christmas-NYE  when I saw more males wearing tuxes.  To those gents: Bless you for complimenting your escorts' formal dress!) Frequently, positive comments to DH from other  more formally dressed  females with relatively casually dressed escorts such as: "you look like James Bond"! puts a smile on my face. (And in some ways, those comments are a very sad commentary on their relationships with their significant others.). Wear what feels good to you and your travel-mate! 🙂

Almost nothing seems out of place to me on Celebrity's "evening chic" nights. Not many people wear tuxes and evening gowns, but a few do. I see a wide range of styles and formality, and in my view, it all fits. Wear what you like.

I always wear my tux on every occasion I can!  I think my wife is beautiful and she looks even better when she's all dressed up and I'm standing next to her in my tux!  Now, you're sailing solo.  Be prepared for people to give you their drink orders!  You'll probably make enough money in tips to pay for your next cruise!

When my wife tells me I look like James Bond, I realize, I've succeeded!

You will be in the minority especially on a TA where a lot of passengers will be at the start or end of a longer trip making packing I,e. the weight, a serious issue.

I no longer travel with a jacket let alone a full suit, dress shirt etc. Same style of pants for every night (under armour golf - lightweight non crease), a few long sleeved smart shirts and sometimes a Union Jack (British flag) bow tie.

Whatever you choice relax and enjoy.

On my recent February Edge cruise there were a few men wearing a tux looking very smart and chic. If you feel good and enjoy wearing a tuxedo, go for it - it's your cruise.

My husband wore his tux on our recent Beyond cruise. We saw about 5 other men in tuxes. Like others have said he got compliments from both men and women. I encourage you to wear your tux and enjoy looking your best.

On Eclipse last month only 3-4 tuxes in evidence.

I own a tux but only wear it when sailing Cunard. On their formal nights 90% or more men will be wearing one making it much more enjoyable IMO.

I have no desire to stand out on other lines nor pack unnecessary clothing.

As everyone says, do what YOU are comfortable doing is the best answer.

While I always bring my tux on a Cunard cruise and don’t even wear a jacket or tie on Celebrity there is a high likelihood that many men will be wearing a suit on Celebrity TA.

There is better than a 50% probability that at least one other pax will be wearing a tux. Also, many women will dress up.

In my experience, there are more tuxedos seen on cruises in Europe and Asia than the Caribbean or Alaska, but you won’t likely stick out like a sore thumb on any itinerary. I wouldn’t hesitate to dress up if I were you. Wear what you like and enjoy yourself!

If you want to wear a Tuxedo why must you either feel out of place or superior? Can't you just be happy?

I guess it depends which Bond they are referring to. :classic_biggrin:

I got the same response by wearing a blue suit, white shirt, and tie on a T/A so maybe you don't need to go the tux path. Actually if you wear a tie you are probably in the 'best dressed' category.

Always better to be over dressed than not..I say go for it..I wore nice subtle black jacquard blazer a couple of times on my recent cruise on the Ascent…received a lot of compliments and it brought me some luck in the casino…I hadn’t packed a blazer in years..no tie though..

Was on the Apex in January.   Don't recall seeing a single tux on either Chic night.   I wore a jacket and tie but few of those as well.   Sadly, most just ignore chic night and dress as they do every other night.

We were on Apex in January also and didn't see anyone in tux, suit or fancy dress for evening chic.  In fact didn't see any special effort on evening chic nights.

When we first started cruising and while he was on active duty, DH wore his Navy mess dress for formal evenings a while few times.  He got tired of being asked "Captain, what is the weather tomorrow, etc."  He is a retired Navy captain 😊.  He went to suits, now a sport coat and tie.

Wear your tux, look and feel fabulous, and let the other 1400 or so men feel out of place.

Seeing someone wearing a tux while I’m wearing smart casual on a chic night certainly does not make me feel out of place. I can think of other things it makes me feel but it’s probably better I don’t say anything.
