How to convince someone a balcony is not necessary

Because they are 5 and I am 1. We need to get two cabins and it's not yet determined how costs will be split (which I'm fine with no matter if I end up paying 50% - my cousin keeps trying to "pay" for things for me because I bought her wedding dress for her and made her wedding cake but I'm in a better finacial situation then they are).

As for the balcony to "escape" to - I'm thinking that's what the second room will be for. If we have connecting interiors, then the kids can be in one room and the parents can have some alone time in the other (me, I'll be in the casino, lol).

Well, Ithink if I were you, (you seem to be able to afford it) I'djust go with the balconies. Who is going to determinehow the cost issplit? Since you don't mind paying 50%, ask them how they want to split the cost of the balconies - if it's half - you're allset - if it's less - even better!

I'd take St. Thomas and San Juan over Nassau ANY day!!!!!

Have you worked out just how much more Liberty is with a balcony?

I'm thinking interior across from balcony, but if it's for alone time while kids are sleeping, that won't work.

I do believe the only connecting cabins on the Liberty are OceanView.

I can see their reasoning for a balcony, with being able to sit out there and see the little ones inside sleeping, but truly, I'd take the 7 day itinerary and get connecting OV cabins for that.

So I guess your babysitting since you will be in a cabin with some of the kids.

They will need two cabins regardless. So you can spend as much time in the casino as you want and have some privacy..... book an inside solo. Yeah you'll pay double but at least you won't be bumping into and waking up the kiddos coming back from whatever your doing. just sayin...

Money is sometimes a tradeoffs... clearly if you haven't taught your family that tradoeff factor you are in for lots of difficult and possible wrong decisions in your life going forward financially.

For me it starts with value and what I have to give up either now/today or dollar value tomorrow or ten years from now.

Everytime I've done balcony as nice as views are, we always come away saying we'll never waste money that way again, so I guess everyone has a different view of this; same food, same service, same entertainment, same ports, same pretty much everything.. just fork more money over for a view and some square feet, YMMV in your view of this of course :D

Here's my problem. I love to cruise and my cousin, her husband their kids want to cruise with me for their 5th wedding anniversary next August.

There will be 6 of us (including 3 kids aged 6, 3, and 1). I am pricing out cruises and there are some decent prices for the end of august (not compared to what I pay in October but for the end of summer).

Here's my dilema - I keep pricing out inside, portholes and oceanview cabins (this cruise needs to be budget conscious because not only do we need to pay for 6 to cruise but also 6 to get to the cruise ship and back). My cousin's husband is stuck on getting two balconies. His grandfather cruises regularly (mostly on HAL and Princess) and he always gets a balcony (says it's the only way to cruise).

I'm trying to convince my cousin and her husband that it's worth giving up the balcony in exchange for a longer cruise.

For less than what 2 balconies on the Victory (5 night cruise) we could sail the Liberty in oceanview cabins for 7 nights.

Don't get me wrong - the Victory would be a great cruise (stops are half moon cay, grand turk and nassau) but the Liberty is two days longer and instead of Nassau we stop at St Thomas and San Juan (and also stops at grand turk and half moon cay). Plus it's had the Funship 2.0 upgrades.

How do you convince someone that a balcony isn't a necessity?

We use to love OV cabins until we decided to try a balcony. Haven't looked back since! LOL

I only get to cruise one time a year so I don't mind spending two or three extra hundred

bucks that I was probably going to blow on some other crap anyway.

I can't do without the balcony. Tried an inside once and absolutely hated it. Part of it was the lack of natural light. Also, though, while there is plenty to do on the ship, I don't necessarily want to deal with other people every waking minute. Sometimes I'd rather just sit on my balcony and read a book.

Had a hard time convincing my DW to try a balcony. The conclusion we came to was that in warmer climates a balcony is preferred . In Alaska an inside or Ocean View would be better then a balcony.

When I retire we probably will almost always cruise in an inside cabin due to cost. Also show them the difference in cost between an inside , outside & balcony.

Explain to them that he can lounge around on the pool deck is just as good as lounging around on a balcony. tell him to try inside first then try a balcony next time that way he can compair it. We did this and found that an inside was just as good as a balcony as we did not spend enough time on it to off set the extra price.

A five day conpaired to a 7 day to me is a no brainer 7 days plus if you have never been to the stops on the 7 day one just expain how you would really like to see ____. Plus 2 extra days no cooking, cleaning, and getting to spend extra time doing stuff with family.

Edit to say you can do an inside room on deck 9 on Liberty and be steps from food and a large balcony.

When at sea, a balcony can be very breezy and cool.

I don't think small kids can use the balcony without you,

With small kids, you're not going to be lounging around in the room anyway.

Balconies are nice for about 30 minutes a day when in port.

I'll go with an outside stateroom and longer trip anyday.

Eve without a longer cruise, I'd still save the money.

We will also only do balconies. Sorry.......;)

I do think that it would be fair to tell the others that

1. you can only afford to pay for your portion of the inside....so you will pay XXXXXX toward your part of the cabin (1/3 of inside) and they can make up the difference..

OR

2. get a balcony and the inside across the hall. We have done that and we are so close to the other group it is like having a connecting.

For us...it is not a matter of getting away from the kids...it is having the ocean right at our doorstep......:)

We use our balcony a lot so it is a necessity as far as we are concerned. We have coffee there in the morning, cocktails at night, and DH spends a large part of the afternoon on the balcony. We won't cruise without one. We always book at cheapest time of the year because we have that option.

The balcony makes up a good portion of my cruise experience. I wouldn't give it up to take a longer cruise.

To the poster that said sitting by the pool is just as good as sitting on a balcony, I totally disagree!

This is my thinking, and I have not read everyones responses.

Unless they have a lot of money, and have 3 young children, they could get an inner or window room.

With 3 young children, I can't see much time spent on the balcony, when there are so many other activites for the children to do. Unless the children are going to be gone most of the time, and I can't see a 1 year old being gone from its mother that much, a balcony would be OK. Another thing, where are you cruising to? If you are going to a cold climate, I would say no on that also.

I think a balcony is for someone who is going to spend a LOT of time out of their room "outside", and not in the ship doing all kinds of activities that they have going on.

I've had an inside, outside and a balcony. I will never do another inside as I like to peak outside before going topside. I may do another balcony but the time I did have one I think I spent a hour on it over 7 days. I much prefer to wander around. I do want to get a cove just because its unique. If we turn out to love it we may be limited to only the Dream class!

Bottom line though...cruise lines have quite a few different choices for cabins because we all have different tastes.
