On the Grand right now. We are just outside the port of Kauai. ??

If I got the time zones right you first posted at 6:16 PM Hawaii time.

So it is one hour after scheduled sailaway and the ship is idling off the harbor? And your question is....?

Are you genuinely worried about getting to Maui on time tomorrow--roughly 190 nautical miles in 14 hours.

If I were there I would grab a drink, put up my feet and enjoy the sunset. And for cripes sake log off the internet!

Perhaps the medical center had a case where the doctor wasn't sure whether to transport the patient to the next port or return to port to disembark them in Kauai. Maybe they had word on some overdue passengers. Who knows. I know that the bridge watch officers on the NCL POA have to wear night vision goggles when transiting the whale sanctuary between Oahu and Maui, and they go to Kahului on Maui, not Lahaina, which is in the midst of the sanctuary, so perhaps they were killing some time to transit during daylight hours.

Generally, there will not be periods of "idle speed", but with a slow speed to make good, they will plan the whole passage at that speed, and the power management program will configure the generators (number and size) to maximize load on the fewest generators. If the ship is coming in early based on this average speed to make, frequent "round turns" or circling is common, most often at night on cruise ships so passengers aren't aware.

Her course does seem a bit unusual. Marine Traffic info is about 50 minutes old. She sailed from Honolulu to Nawiliwili at around 12kn. She has farther to travel to get to Lahaina so would need to average a higher speed. She indeed did go nowhere for about 50 minutes going in one large circle.

If they were intending to transfer a patient, Nawiliwili would be better than Lahaina. Wilcox does not handle heart patients but it would not require a tender and they could fly the patient to Honolulu.

Think California Coastals: we spent many a nights making doughnuts out in the dark ocean so that the casinos and shops could be open. As long as you are between the islands (Kauai/Lanai/Maui), the casino would need to be closed.

Please do report back if you hear the reason for the "unusual" movement. The Grand Princess might just be "allergic" to Hawaii. They've had a few hiccups.

Good morning! Happy Easter to all… I appreciate post 10, 11, and 12! There were no announcements as to why we were delayed. Better, here we are on a beautiful sunny Easter morning off the coast of Maui.

I glanced out the window once when I couldn't sleep heading back to Canaveral. Saw the lights of South Florida. Looked again half an hour later, same lights!

An hour later, there they were again. It finally dawned on me we were sailing in big circles.

I thought the same, feel bad for Sam the OP, did not realize the PCL board was like this :( I starting to get ready for our Diamond cruise in October....gives me second thoughts on posting here.

Several years ago when I went to go on my first Holland America cruise, I went to the HAL board and was treated very poorly by posters over there. I subsequently cancelled my HAL cruise as I thought they represented those on the ship. I later cruised with HAL (several years later) and found the people delightful on the ship. The people on the board were definitely less than welcoming. It gave a bad/wrong impression of the line.

I really didn't understand the OP first post either.

Normally the Princess board is not like this.

Perhaps people were looking for some "news" that might affect other cruises, like engine issues, or some other "news worthy" event. The original post didn't indicate any.

Otherwise, my opinion is that an evening at sea is just that - nothing special about the course, as long as the ship gets to the next port on time.

Apparently the OP thought sailing in circles was unusual. Maybe it is.

Hi Laffnvegas!

You and I have met years ago online passing off the Holland America banner for The San Diego WebCam photo.

Please don't hesitate posting on the site as most of the folks are pretty nice. I have learned just to ignore the few who have excessive keyboard Courage.

Enjoy your upcoming cruise!
