Mariner Society- spending bonus

From what I understand, you receive 1 cruise credit for every $300 you spend. Now my question is, does it have to be only on-board spending or does anything you buy on the website prior to your cruise like excursions, drink package also count?

Who keeps track of this spending? I don't see no transaction history on my account on HAL website so how will they now I've spent $300

Also does $300 have to be spent all at once? or for instance can you spend $150 one day and $150 another day will that count?

It is everything you buy on the website too..excursions, drink packages, everything. It is tracked through your mariner number. You are signed in to their website and so they have your mariner number when you order. It is an accumulative total for the cruise

All spending pre cruise and on board count including transfers and hotel booked through HAL as well as gratuities and laundry. I am not sure if beverages “purchased” on explore 4 perks. Perhaps someone who has had this can help out. The credit is for total spend and they are liberal in applying credit.

If you purchase Explore 4, the cost of the package counts. The individual beverages do not.

We had a very lively thread on this subject a couple of years ago. I ended up talking at length with a Mariner Society Supervisor a couple of times who said that the Signature Beverage Pkg included in the Explore 4 promo doesn't count towards the Onboard Spending Bonus. If you purchase the SBP separately, then the Pkg price goes towards the Spending Bonus. There have been reports of people getting credit for the individual drinks, but it is not HAL policy for that to happen.

AFAIK It's everything you spend on the ship, plus whatever you buy in advance on the HAL website (indulgences, tours, spa, etc) *except* casino related purchases and pre-purchase of OBC. Also, you can't get days in excess of the actual days sailed: if sailing for 10 days, and you spend more than $3000 you will only get 10 days extra (IE $300 per day sailed).

Also, if booked in a suite (Vista, Signature, Neptune, and Pinnacle) you get 2x days for each day sailed. This can work out nicely sometimes, when for example your cruise has Signature suites for a price not much higher than a veranda, especially if there is a promo with additional perks for buying such.

Clarification, please. I thought that the extra Mariner days were only given for each $300 spent while on board. Does it also include pre-booked expenses? Not that it actually makes any difference. If you pre-purchase items and then cancel the cruise, you won't get the extra days, will you?

Not sure that it would include airfare, but (based on my experience) it does include pre-booked/pre-purchased items such as shore excursions and specialty restaurants. Not that it actually makes any difference. If you pre-purchase items and then cancel the cruise, you won't get the extra days, will you? Based on my experience, no, you will not get the extra days.

See my comments in blue above. Also, I suggest you contact the Mariner Society directly for the most authoritative and up-to-date information.

Smooth sailing :ship: :ship: :ship:

The extra Mariner days are credited for expenses attached to your booking number. That includes purchases made on board, in advance, and even those made by others on your behalf.

Since purchases made in advance are refunded if the cruise is canceled, and obviously can't be made on board, there are no bonus days to credit in that case.

Do transfers to the airport at the end of the cruise but booked ahead of the cruise count towards this as well? For some reason, I had it in my head that for transfers to count, I had to wait until I was actually on board. Thanks for clarifying!

Discussed here frequently. Also that they are very generous with their rounding up to that $300 level.

I agree, HAL has been very generous in rounding up! Transfers to airports got credit...I always wait until on board to book the transfers through shoe excursion, and it appears on the ship board bill.

Found this online, although not on HAL website.

Be careful with this. It doesn't include 5 star level which started many years ago.

agree. The up to date rewards are here https://www.hollandamerica.com/marinerSociety/Main.action?tabName=Rewards#

You might need to log in to access it. I was logged in when I did.

It is also enclosed in our Mariner Magazine when we receive it.

I was very surprised to learn that, even though I purchased excursions for my family as the entire cruise was paid for by my DH and I, we were denied mariner points for the excursions I purchased for them. I called to complain, but was told that I could only get points for things that were personally used by my DH and me. I'm curious to know if the rest of my family (all six of them) received mariner points for the excursions I paid for them.

Has anyone else had this problem?

The rest of the family should have received the Mariner points.

I have done some gifts and they were credited to the people who used them and yes, they did get the points.

As mentioned earlier, It's not who buys them but who uses them.

I don't get the miles when I purchase airline tickets for one of our kids, they do. Same with paying for multiple rooms at a hotel - no extra nights credit towards higher loyalty award level. When my Mom took the whole clan on a Christmas cruise, everyone got their own Mariner numbers and sailing-day credits. That was before the spending bonus was instituted, but it seems to be the norm in the travel business to ascribe rewards earned to the end-user.
