Renegade Puffers [Smokers] on Ships

I will be writing a full report to Celebrity within the post cruise survey once I get home, but in a nutshell, our holiday cruise (Dec 2017) had a large population of Renegade Puffers [smokers] on board - that is, smoking "where ever and whenever" they wanted to.

My priority issue with this is the overall "safety" concern (fires at sea? NO thanks!!!). We observed puffing people tossing butts overboard into the wind, snuffing out butts and placing them in PAPER garbage bins, and all of this with celebrity staff walking by and saying nothing (we believe the junior staff were trying to avoid confrontation with the guests). We took it upon ourselves to report offenses as they happened and IF you said something, the offenders were approached (by more senior staff or security).

Sidebar - this is absolutely hear-say, so take it with a grain of salt - but apparently an offender was kicked off our ship because of his rude response back to Senior Staff when he refused to be conform to the rules (YAY to Celebrity, if that was true).

Should Celebrity be more proactive in eliminating this issue? (for example, if they have received multiple complaints, should security increase their presence in problem areas?)

Interested in hearing the opinions of others and IF you have experienced renegade puffers, what have YOU done about it to bring it to the attention of Celebrity.

We had a smoker on the balcony a couple of rooms down from us. we called guest services and an officer came to our room and saw him leaning over the balcony smoking. After that he tried to be sneaky and stay behind the divider but we still could smell it they went to his cabin again we were told they might ban him from future cruises.

Right on that you called. He should have been tossed off the ship after the first warming!

Also fined, and charged to clean the cabin. Maybe they was lucky no being expelled from the ship

I don't know how many passengers constituted the "large population" of smokers during your cruise, or where they were smoking outside the designated areas, but all efforts to have Celebrity enforce its related policies are appreciated.

I was on Infinity last month and while walking down the hallway I observed a Security Officer knocking on an inside cabin door. When opened I could smell a puff of smoke. The officer said - I'm here to check you smoke detector it is activating, have you been smoking in your room?... The guy looked like a deer caught in headlights. Not sure what happened later...

Did I miss something? Where did the OP say they interacted directly with the discourteous smokers? The OP simply reported the offence to the ship staff.

I am sure the ship staff can monitor and react without anyone's assistance.

Would you prefer a fire to be started, while you are waiting for someone to react?

No thanks, I will continue to report all offenses to security and/or staff.

Smoking in non-designated areas is unacceptable.

Like any safety issue, it's only common sense for passengers to point out to the crew something posing a potential threat to the ship and those aboard.

The OP wasn't complaining about smoking per se, just smoking in areas designated by Celebrity as non-smoking areas.

If someone is smoking on their balcony it is unlikely that the ship staff can monitor and react without it being reported.

If they are in a public area that is non smoking, or in a smoking area and tossing butts overboard or stuffing them in a trash can I would hope ship staff would see and react. If not, I would and have brought it to someones attention.

Smoking is banned in cabins and on balconies, and limited to designated smoking areas, for safety issues and so that other passengers can enjoy their voyage.

Thanks to the OP for their actions. Besides the obvious and serious danger careless smokers put all cruisers into there are additional real consequences to those who have serious health issues with smoke. I for one would definitely report violations of the smoking rules.

I'm SHOCKED that nothing was done to these rule breakers !

I am a smoker, cigars, I marched myself to the upper deck and baked in the sun daily to enjoy a smoke with the other smokers.

If I had known that nothing would be done to rule breakers I may have tried it also, lol.

But, seriously, where does end, if that rule can be broken without consequences, I guess others can be broken also.

I totally agree with the OP. You did the exact same thing that I would have done. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I think there are many that would do the same. Smoking has its own designated areas period.

Thank you for speaking up and caring about health and safety...

If they tossed him off the ship after the first warning it wouldn't be much of a warning would it? More like a coup de gras. :)

No warning from me, get caught get tossed. And just to show everyone that I am not completely heartless I might even wait until we got into sight of the next port before I tossed the offender off the ship.;)

Never seen this on any cruise before. Not saying it didn't happen, but on any cruise I have been on, smokers know the areas they can use and I have yet to see anyone blatantly abusing it. Sure you could get one or two who try to smoke on a balcony perhaps...but in any large group of ppl(3-5,000 on a average cruise) there are always going to be a few who break the rules, whatever they are.

As for fire's starting...sure it can happen..but I love how everyone talks about the ONE fire that did happen..not the 99,000 cruises that had people smoking on the balconies for years without an issue.

I am very surprised to hear that if it was this obvious and bad, that no one did anything about it. Sounds like there may have been a bad experience or situation or two that tainted the overview/opinion of the whole cruise for the OP.

I disagree. Use the Captain Bligh approach to toss him off the ship.

Mind our own business and leave management of the ship and rules to those who are paid and assigned to do so.

LMAO..hmm NO. It should be everybody's business. If you saw someone go overboard and waving for help would you ignore it, say it's the crews job to look, not mine?

I must study our ship (Solstice) and learn where the smoking areas are.... so I can avoid them on our cruise March / April!

Celebrity makes it real easy. No smoking anywhere inside the ship, including all cabins and balconies. A list of

designated

outside smoking areas will be published in your Celebrity Today.

Per Celebrity's website:

"For your comfort and enjoyment, our ships are designated as non-smoking; however, we recognize that some of our guests smoke. Therefore, cigarette, cigar and pipe smoking is permitted in designated outdoor areas of the ship. Smoking is not permitted in any dining venue, casino, theater, lounge, hallway, elevator, or corridor. This policy includes smoking-like products such as electronic cigarettes. Smoking is not permitted inside any stateroom, nor on any stateroom veranda. If you are in violation of this policy, a cleaning fee of $250 USD will be applied to your SeaPass® account and you may be subject to further action pursuant to the "Consequences Section" of the Guest Conduct Policy. Cigarettes, cigars and pipe tobacco must be properly disposed of and never thrown overboard. You must be at least 18 years of age to purchase, possess or use tobacco onboard.

Additionally, there is a non-smoking policy on all components of the land tour portion of all Celebrity Cruises Cruisetour products. We appreciate your understanding and adherence."

I know on Royal it was usually a section on deck 4 or 5 outside the MDR on the port side (I believe) and also on the pool deck but only port side. I think Celebrity follows the same idea?

Pretty easy to avoid on a ship that large with only 2 sections that allow smoking.
