Renegade Puffers [Smokers] on Ships

We reported someone smoking when we were in an aft cabin on I believe the Equinox a couple of years ago to Guest relations. They advised us that they would handle it & thanked us. They alerted all cabin stewards to be looking for old cigarette butts & it stopped. We wondered what happened so we went down to Guest relations a couple of days later & they advised us that they had indeed found the offender and was given a warning, 2nd time is a fine & 3rd time they are escorted off the ship. They have to follow protocol & everything is put in writing to the offender.

A sneaky smoker, judging by their reaction. Me =:halo:

Agree ... me thinks drew"69" is one of those rude renegade puffers as the original OP put it so eloquently. This is our first X cruise and hope this does not become an issue for us as I have respiratory problems. I have seen someone on these posts where smoking areas are listed on the Reflection but can't seem to find them now.

Me thinks me smells smoke.

Me thinks that drew doesn't find smoke an issue. Maybe feels that the only issue is whining non smokers.

If I find anyone smoking where they shouldn't be I would be reporting it too. How dare they put lives at risk. Apart from the fact I hate the smell of it why should we have to put up with the stink. Report them I say

Agreed..people should follow rules..

Just like washing\sanitizing hands before eating and after using the washroom......how many people are guilty of that??!..hmmm

And to me, that is sicker and more disgusting and can ruin more peoples vacation if norovirus breaks out on board than a few renegade smokers.

I think we should talk more about that as it is a much bigger issue than smoking in the wrong spot IMHO!

Then start a thread about it. If you do a search you'll find plenty of threads concerning norovirus and hand washing you can contribute to. Not washing hands isn't a rule that is being broken. I agree with you it is disgusting when others don't wash their hands.

Now back to the topic of this thread. Smokers that are breaking the rules by smoking in non designated areas need to be held accountable for their actions.

Oh..sorry...I thought it was a rule.....cause doesn't seem to be much common sense out there...surpised cruise lines don't make it a rule to enter various eating areas..

Anyways...anyone who breaks rules need to be held accountable..agreed...including saving chairs, sharing drink packages and the list goes on.

The main point of the OP's post here, at least in my understanding was the wide spread and blatant breaking of the rules by smokers. Which I have never seen before or heard of to be honest. I think there maybe some sweeping generalizations being made here.

I have done 10 cruises and never seen it ONCE yet by even one smoker. So not saying it cant happen, but this thread makes It sound likes it back in the 80's and its nothing but blue smoke everywhere....for people to say they need to study the deck plans of the ship to escape the smoke is well..........

I think the OP is quite clear that it was an observation made on this one cruise and even has lots of qualifying statements built in. "All brown-haired people on the cruise smoked everywhere" would be a sweeping generalization. The OP doesn't approach that level anywhere. It's just a discussion question about what you would or wouldn't do if witnessing the same behavior.

Some people though like to flaunt the rules or have the attitude that 'the rules don't apply to them'.... on our cruise in March, if I see someone who is smoking in an area they shouldn't be smoking in I'll tell them off - and tell them they re being disrespectful to ALL cruise passengers or something like that.... then I will inform one of the celebrity staff members.

It’s been more than 30 years since I was a (tobacco smoker); I was fairly particular then, smoked filterless luckies, camels, export A’s, English Ovals, Marlboros or rolled my own. Couldn’t stand the smell of Winston’s or Newport’s. Now I can’t stand the smell of tobacco period; I can even smell a smoker if he’s in a car in front of mine. When a smoker has been in an elevator or is seated near me it’s nauseating.

On some ships (Oceania for one) the smokers are given one corner on the pool deck; if you need to use the Men’s Room you must go through the cloud. If the wind is blowing the wrong way the tobacco cloud travels across one side of the pool. I’d rather share an elevator with a homeless guy than a smoker.

Hapag Lloyd has the highest rated cruise ships in the world, Europa 1 and 2; they are a German line and allow smoking on their balconies and all cabins have balconies so I cannot travel on them.

My sense of smell may be extreme but there’s not much I can do about that. I really miss Renaissance Cruise Line.

I walk every morning between 5-5:30 AM on our cruises for 1.5 hours. As we all know one side (port or starboard) of the ship by the track has tables for smokers. More times than not as we are pulling in port and if the view is better some (not all) smokers will leave the smoking side with their lite cigarette and ashtray in hand and stroll over to the nonsmoking side to check out the port as we are pulling in. I've actually seen staff members doing their morning duties stop what they are doing and tell (I'm assuming as I can't hear them) the smokers to leave. Which they do. I will always high five the staff that enforce that rule. We never had a balcony smoker but if we did I would rat them out!

If it were me I'd rat out the smoker to a staff member and let them handle the violator. It's not worth the confrontation that may happen.

Yeah..never seen that in my experience....but I have only cruised Royal..so maybe its much different. Or maybe cause Royal gives smokers a place to smoke inside, they don't flaunt and violate the smoking rules as much on Celebrity.

This thread makes it sound like its a smokers free for all on Celebrity cruises..lighting up, throwing out, standing wherever they want to when they want to.....interesting.

I have not seen that on any Celebrity cruises I've been on. But, the demographics onboard a ship could have an effect on any particular sailing. A short cruise has a higher likelihood of being full of partiers, for example. Or if there is a large group, sometimes they feel entitled to bend the rules as they see fit and there's strength in numbers (so to speak).

No it's not different. I've also have seen it on some of our RC cruises. Obliviously your interpretation of this thread is different than mine. Interesting. It's about a few so called (by the OP) renegade smokers and what would you do if you witnessed a smoker smoking in a non designated smoking area.

I have never seen one smoker in 10 cruises smoking in a non-smoking place...so yeah, I understand what the OP is saying. Its just never been my experience.

Right on! But it doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Just sharing my experiences. Others have posted on this thread and other threads and even on other cruise line forums that they have had problems with smokers next to them on their balconies smoking. We never have. Doesn't mean it doesn't happen just because we haven't had the problem.

Our balcony on deck 6 on Silhouette adjoined the roof of a restaurant on the deck below. The first morning at sea we counted 10 cigarette butts on our balcony and the restaurant roof. We reported it to guest services but we knew it would be difficult to work out who had thrown them from one of the higher decks. The second day there were 3, but none after that, so I assume the perpetrator had been detected.

There are often a few who don't believe the rules apply to them.

The cruise we took on Silhouette on Dec 17 we had an Alcove. One day, as I headed to grab some ice cream to bring back, a trio passed me just outside my alcove. One of them had a lot cigar in his hand. I immediately looked around, saw the Specialty Matre'D was just sitting down to lunch at The Porch, and went to let him know. He RAN to catch them to let them know they could not do that.

I've seen people move ashtrays at the Sunset Bar from the smoking to non-smoking side. A comment to the waiter responsible for the Alcoves and it was attended to. A comment to the bartender at the bar did nothing. The waiter got a note with my appreciation to his boss.

I've even seen one woman take out her cigarettes and lighter and start to light up in the stairwell between 4 and 5 while heading to the doors of the smoking area on 5 out the port doors. There was a security guard nearby who took care of that one. :)

We've even seen one couple using their vapers during dinner in the MDR one evening. The waiter wouldn't do anything about it. The Asst Matre'D, however, did. We got dirty looks from the couple after that, but didn't have to smell it any further.

Sadly, there are always people who don't believe the rules apply to them.

Mind our own business and leave management of the ship and rules to those who are paid and assigned to do so.

I guess you could also mind your own business & ignore a baby locked in a hot car, too! When you choose NOT to get involved, that's when things can go wrong. If you see something, say something!
