Cruise sold out

I am surprised our December 3rd cruise on the Grand to Mexico is sold out. Every cruise I’ve been on did not sell out till after final payment. I guess I won’t be trying to convince my friend to book. She was hesitant because she’s single and didn’t want to pay the extra cost for a single.

Have you looked at whether it is sold in multiple segments? We've sometimes seen longer cruises "sold out" while you could still book the same cruise as two separate segments. And, there is always the possibility that cabins will open up as the final payment date nears.

You can check around final payment time to see if there are some cancellations then. With all the low deposit cruises Princess is offering, its likely some people are booking more than they intend to do and deciding just before the big payment is due.

I am having this problem and I can't figure it out.

The 14-nighter on June 30 on the Caribbean Princess is almost sold out. But, the 7-nighter (June 30) and the next 7-nighter (July 7) are totally open. So, why does the 14-nighter look booked up?

Because Princess has blocked a certain number of cabins for the 14 night cruise and those are sold out. If you book it as 2 segments of 7 nights each, you might have to change cabins...again depending on availability. We hit the same thing with a 20 night vs. 2 10 night cruises. It really doesn't matter as long as you get on the ship, right? There are perks and things that may differ. For instance, if you book as 2 7s, you can use a shareholder's credit twice. I actually made a chart of the various OBCs, internet packages, etc. to figure out which was the better way to go. Also, the cost of 2 7s may differ slightly from a 14 nighter.

I betcha it's large groups that are holding the cabins. That's usually one of the cheapest dates to book in the whole year, so it makes sense that large groups have cabins on hold. Check back after final payment is due and there might be some open then.

I believe we booked a cruise around this date in the past. My husband’s birthday is on December 4th and I remember celebrating on one of our cruises.

We have a guaranteed cabin, I wonder if the fact it’s sold out we may find our what cabin we got.

Hopefully the ship hasn't been chartered...

If the ship was chartered, the charter group has 100% of the ship and all bookings would have to be made through the charter group. The group that has done the charter owns the ship for the entire cruise and is responsible for all cabin sales. Therefore, it can not have been chartered. This is a fundamental misuse of the word "charter".

Now it is possible that a group or perhaps several groups have booked a large number of cabins and it is difficult to find out if this is the case but it definitely has not been "chartered".

My cruise next April is showing sold out, but then it was a few weeks ago too, then some cabins came available.

Being sold out means I can’t check for lower rates. However I did get a great deal.

Because there won’t be lower rates if it is sold out, but keep checking back you never know when cabins will become available.

I wondered the same thing! I even looked (out of curiosity) at some cabin availability on both the June 30 & July 7 sailings and a lot of the same cabins show as available for both cruises. Go figure!!

We're actually booked on both of the 7-day sailings. Unfortunately no stockholder OBC for either segment but we got great casino rates!! :)

If an outside group arranged for a full ship charter, then they'd cancel all the existing bookings.

The Princess rep told me the voyage is sold out. I asked if it may open up after final payment and she said no, their is a waitlist and no more people can be put on the waitlist.

Sold out does mean they are taking no more GTY bookings which are what are on the waitlist.

However, if enough people do cancel and the waitlist people do get cabins, then there is a chance space could become available for new bookings.

My point exactly. Cruiser411 posted that perhaps the cruise might have been chartered. As both of us have stated, the ship can not have been chartered.

I had been looking at booking this sailing not too long ago. There was plenty of availability then and now, it is not showing as sold out, it is showing the following message:

Voyage departure date is too close to complete this booking. Please select a different departure date or contact us for assistance.

That doesn't make much sense to me as it is months in the future and that first week of December is known to go down to the wire before they fill the ship.

To me, this looks as though they may be entering into negotiations to either charter the ship or send it into dry dock for some needed maintenance that was recently discovered but is not immediate. The other option is they may be considering a revised itinerary and you should be safe as they would give you the option of canceling or rebooking on that itinerary if the change is significant. They always block new bookings in these scenarios due to the perks they throw in for already booked passengers.

I've been booked on a sailing before that was chartered and it takes a few months to get all the contracts in order before they will cancel the bookings of the original sailing. Someone on our roll call knew all about it way ahead of time, though and we weren't notified by the cruise line until nearly 4-5 months later that our cruise was canceled. Another time, I was booked on a sailing where the itinerary was changed so significantly that we just weren't interested in going on it any longer. Then again, I booked another sailing to replace that one and it did sell out pronto!! There are now some cabins that popped back up in the inventory as they opened another sailing with that same exact itinerary and moved some people over. The cabins that are now available are all more than triple of what we paid.

Time will tell. Please report back when you find out what happened.

I have a bad feeling I think they are going to cancel this cruise....can't even bring it up on My Princess Page...all my other cruises come up but not December 3, 2018...very suspicious. Wonder what they will do if anything to compensate ?
