No Plastic Straws...funny edition.

First let me congratulate NCL on their no plastic straws policy, I think that is a great idea. However, I just returned from a British Isles cruise where I think the no plastic straws idea was taken to the extreme.

In the picture below you can see the milk cartons that were on the breakfast buffet every morning. These milk cartons used to have a small pointy plastic straw that was used to poke a hole (where the round dot is on top) to drink the milk. The straws have now been removed making it very difficult to drink the milk. I watched passengers trying to open the milk carton in various ways including using their teeth. It’s not easy my friends. The best way was to poke the hole using the fork and then “milk” the carton like it was a cow udder into a glass. It was quite comical watching people trying to open these milk cartons.

My question is; what happened to that little straw that was already on the carton? I could see the little piece of wax that is used to hold the straw still there on the carton. Did NCL waste the manpower to have those straws removed? And what became of those plastic straws, were they throw into the trash anyway?

My suggestion to NCL is; they should have the manufacturer put the milk in an easy open carton.

One more point about the no straws policy, I had absolutely no problem drinking frozen adult beverages without a straw.

Though I do think we ALL need to be responsible about the amount of plastic and garbage waste we create for the environment, we have taken this to the EXTREME....this is UDDER, pardon the pun, nonsense. Like you said, there was ALREADY a straw and plastic wrapper on the carton, why not leave it....AND CHANGE packaging on NEW MILK CARTONS.....

If you bring a juice box or Capri Sun type of drink to Sea World, they make you remove the straw and toss it into the trash.

With NCL, I suppose the straw on those boxes is also thrown away. By doing it that way, there is less of a chance of the straw blowing off of the ship and ending up in the water.

Taking the straw off and throwing it away totally defeats the purpose of the straw ban in which is to REDUCE the amount of single use plastic that is tossed

The concern is that straws end up in the ocean...

"As a member of Ocean Conservancy’s Trash Free Seas Alliance®, Norwegian is actively working towards solutions that will mitigate plastic waste entering the ocean."

Sadly, guests can't be trusted to properly dispose of waste so straws often blow off of the ship and land in the ocean.

Because some guests will walk away from a pool deck table or lounge and leave a cup and straw behind. Up will come a breeze, and blow it overboard. There are trash receptacles on the pool deck. No need to leave anything.

The cups can’t get into small openings in sea creatures like straws....at least that is what I have been told...

If the sea turtles would all go to drug rehab we would all still have our straws on board the ship. But NO! The sea turtles will not give up their coke habit. They have to keep snorting the happy dust.

;p:')

Problem is even cups break down into micro plastics which has become so insidious it is being found in our bottled drinking water around the world.

No straws is just a small win for the ocean, but if they all end up in our land fills, then it breaks down and leaches into our ground water. I am all for saving the ocean, but if it just gets diverted to landfill, we really aren't fixing the problem.

Did a Panama Canal cruise on Celebrity in April. When ordering a mixed drink, kept saying "no straw please" since we just take them out and put them on the bar. We couldn't get them to stop giving us straws.

We have a plan to help us pay for all the "freestyle" convenience fees

on our upcoming cruise. With 4,700 plus passengers we figure about

20% will want a straw.

We plan to have a table set up at each port and offer paper straws.

$2 for six straws per customer with 20% buying them will be about

$1,800 dollars. So in a quad cabin that should cover the service charges,

convenience fees, prohibition, casino tips, cash tips for staff, etc.

And of course we'll offer them at the crew bar on ladies night.

Any other ideas will be greatly appreciated.

We are the Moore's

Tampa Bay
