Just curious on the percentages of what people agree to do when sailing with others.  I know how I do it since I normally travel with about 10 +/- people who partake in my benefits. I did have to revise how I handle this when not sailing with family members, sometimes you learn the hard way.

No I do not,  in fact I covered all the tips when someone else stiffed them. That is why I now handle tips differently unless it’s my family. I now collect money on day 1 and put it in the safe with a card to be given out at the end of the week. I always include a card so that has not changed, only when I collect the money has changed so I do not get burned again.

I like the poll but it should be expanded perhaps for folks sailing with themselves (solos, couples, parents with children).  My answers to 1 & 3 wouldn't change though - I decide during the cruise IF I am going to tip DSC staff, who and how much; I always tip non-DSC staff but again, I decide how much during the cruise based on the service quality - I start with a range in mind, and adjust accordingly.

 

If I were travelling with others, I think there should be advance agreement as to the minimum tip and that should be prepaid even before cruising and put in safe.  Although, the one time I shared with another solo, we agreed we would each tip separately.  She is an experienced cruiser and I figured she'd tip appropriately, so I did my own thing and tipped as I saw fit.

The pole just does not work, it does not cover those people who don't use staff who are not part of the DSC, it does not cover people who do not tip over and above DSC and it does not cover people who remove the DSC.

 

For someone who sails steerage, leaves the DSC in place but pays no more, it is not possible to answer, those people are the majority of cruisers, most cruisers don't have/use butlers or concierges.

I only share my cabin with my husband, and we determine on the last day how much extra to tip our steward.  

My answer for #3 was based on my 1 and only cruise in a suite to which we were upgraded.  We usually cruise in regular cabins.

I never consult with my cabin mates ahead of time regarding tipping.  I am a big tipper and I tip everybody who provides me with good service.  If my cabin mates wish to pitch in, I let them.

One envelope each  for the steward,  for the butler and  for the concierge.

At the end of the cruise I either leave those amounts in place or add/subtract.

I don't understand why you need to agree on and collect tips from anyone. Everyone pays their own DSC and if they want to tip extra that is their business and has nothing to do with me. If I want to tip extra I do.

I did that on my cruise last week. Before I left home I had an envelope marked Sunday-Saturday for gambling, an envelope marked money for cabs, excursion shopping, an envelope with 1s and 5s in it for drink and dining tips.  Once we got on board there were 4 of us we made an envelope for butler and one for steward. All 4 of us put money in these and locked in safe.  Our butler (genie) was so good we added more to her envelope mid way through the cruise. We were used to butlers on NCL and hadn’t realized how much more genies do on RCI. We had no need to tip concierge because the genie did his/her things so money we planned on giving concierge went in genie envelope. Dinner was always fun with my friend I sailed with every night we argued about whose leaving the tip. She had done exactly what I did with all her envelopes including the one that had singles and fives.

Your friend Maria is the reason that outside of family I now collect everyone’s tips at the start of the cruise.

I will never let that happen to me or my cousin again.

Quest 1 : agree with whom? Cabin mates or neighbors using my room for perks.

Quest 2: why do you need to collect tip? Because I have sailed with someone who decided on the last day they were not tipping the butler or concierge after her kids used their services daily.

I take a few single dollars to tip the cocktail runners in the casino, it helps get refills faster.  Other than that, I don’t use butlers or concierges. I don’t tip bartenders because I only drink in the casino since I book CAS inside room offers.  I prepay the DSC and I’ve already paid SDP tips when I accept the booking offer ( its not free ).

 

I have a hard time tipping over 15% on land also, just can’t get behind these 18% or 20% rates pre-printed on receipts.  I rarely feel I’m getting the service that deserves that kind of tip.  It galls me to see it on fast food receipts now, I’m not going to tip a cashier at the pizza joint when I stop by to pick up a take out pizza.

 

I actually think cruise ship workers are paid enough when you add in their room and board is covered while they work, and they get to travel.  They get paid a lot better than I did my first job when I signed up at 18 with Uncle Sam.

 

Ya’ll are welcome to tip all the extra you want if you feel sorry for cruise workers.

We are going on a 9 night trip in the Haven.  Tips already paid are $700 for staff and specialty dining.  That equals $77 a day for tips.  I think enough is enough.....

We just leave the DSC on and usually tip the steward extra.  Simple, easy, and, to me, right.

 

Have not had a butler and don't use the kid's program, so if we did additional tips would be provided.

I always try to remember to tip my cabin steward near the end of the cruise but no set or predetermined amount.  As well I normally tip in the specialty dining.  In the casino I will tip the dealer, especially at the poker table and any time I get a drink (Mt Dew only for me please) I give the server a $1 white chip.

First off, what's the "DSC" ? that everybody keeps referring to?

 

We always introduce ourselves to our room steward & give him/her $10 on the first day (we ALWAY do an Inside GTY cabin) which usually ensures our cabin gets done early.  If the service is good we'll give him/her an additional $10-20 on the last night.

 

If the service in a restaurant(s) is exceptionally good we'll get the waiter/waittress' name & then ask for a "Comment Card" from the Maitre'D on the way out.  We'll fill this out, praise them to the skies & drop it at Reception at some point in the cruise.  I've asked CD's & the Hotel Manager(s)  & they've all said this makes a HUGE difference to a crew member's performance review.

 

We don't drink very much but we NEVER leave an additional tip for the bar staff.  The 18% "service fee" we feel is more than enough.  We don't gamble so we don't visit the casino except to watch.

 

We're Platinum so we get two "freebie" specialty restaurant reservations.  If the service is good (and it almost always is) we'll hand the waiter $10-15 tip as we leave.
