Yes you still turn the handle but I should have been more specific. You do have to push the handle down but if your hands are full you don't have to fumble around for your card as you did in the past. If you have full hands you can at least push the handle with you forearm etc.

gotcha thanks!

#1 what port were you at that you waited 2 hours to check-in after security? Wow.

How about Vancouver, Canada.  We sat in a hugh hall waiting to board for over three hours.    Never, ever will I board in Vancouver

if one does not have a smart phone is there any point in using it?

In that case, the Medallion is simply used like the cruise card.

Yea, to all of the above, but what about walking into one of the retail stores and having a clerk acknowledge you by name and having your picture/name displayed on a screen?  What about everyone and anyone knowing where you are at any time.

I personally do not like those ideas and will probably when I board  later this month, go to guest services and ask them to give me a cruise card instead and turn off the medallion so all of the above won't be happening.  Just tapping the cruise card on the ipad to open your door is no big thing and I would personally just use the medallion for that and nothing else.  The Princess contract says I should be able to do this, so just hoping I can.

Pooh

1. I do not see how being greeted by shop personnel is so horrifying, however a simple inexpensive RFID pouch  will stop this horror.

2. Not everyone will know where you are (or particularly care for that matter) , you control that. In any event you can avoid that with the aforementioned RFID pouch.

Don't forget about playing the cool little adventure game on some of the big panels.  It's kind of a treasure hunt.  A good way to learn your way around the ship and have some fun.  We got a MedalionNet t-shirt upon completion.

@Anubi - the OceanMedallion enables a portfolio of experiences that require nothing from the guest - keyless stateroom entry, hassle-free payment, enhanced crew interactions and seamless ship embarkation and disembarkation. The Medallion itself is the enabler, but all a guest has to do is have it ... nothing else is required - no charging, no on/off switch, no configuring.

In addition to those fundamental features, guests can also engage in a number of other digital experiences powered by their Medallion, including wayfinding/friend locator (OceanCompass), service on demand (OceanNow), interactive games (PlayOcean), personalized itinerary bookmarking (JourneyView), anywhere wagering (Ocean Casino), travel shows viewing (OceanView).  Those experiences can be accessed from the MedallionClass app on smart devices, or by using the public portals found throughout the ship or on stateroom TVs.  Guests are free to engage in as many or as few of these experiences as they would like.

Should you prefer that members of your travel party not be able to locate you on board when they use OceanCompass on the portals around the ship or from their smart device, then you should turn on the "Hide My Location" feature within OceanCompass using your mobile device. That's the only experience that would require any action from you.

I've never made it onto the ship in 2 minutes either. 😄LOL

And talk about messaging others on board. Unless you want to stare into your phone all day long waiting for a text, it's almost next to worthless. 😉

People stare at their devices enough on land, it will be interesting to see if that phenomenon spreads to cruise ships.

I have bought an RFID wallet for our upcoming cruise.   Most of the perks Medallion  offers are not of interest to me and I consider some of them to be intrusive. To each his own, but I think Princess is being a bit invasive.  Pleased to hear from this board that they have at least given you the option to turn some features off.

Aluminum foil is cheaper & works great if you don't want to be found or identified.

If you do use it it involves removing it for most things like disemarking, door entry, purchasing items. To me it's just not worth the trouble.

I tried using the locate option to find my sister.  It sent me to  a laundry room.  She says she was never there...

The Medallion was trying to tell you that your sister needed to do her laundry.

Thanks for the explanation.  Much appreciated.  🙂

I totally get the concept of medallion because we frequent Disney and they seem to be the same thing as their magic bands. Last night on his way home from work my husband talked to his parents who are sailing with us on the Sky and my FIL said he heard bad things about medallions. No specifics on what these bad things might be. He apparently doesn't want to wear it. So he's going to put it in his pocket. I told my husband about how you can order a drink using the app and they'll deliver it using your medallion to locate you. What are some other selling points of the medallion in case this comes up again.

With 2 yrs' worth of Medallion threads highlighting its features, we need to regurgitate it over and over and over?

Thsts unfortunate. Have embarked  and disembarked in Vancouver several times, never more than 20 minutes from arrival to checked in and ready to board and disembarkation was fairly quick too..

Personally, we'd never do a cruise early in the season, like the first few cruises in/out of Vancouver as it's always a mess as they get ready for the season, and with Alaska season opening earlier and earlier, and more and more ships, those first few cruises are worse than ever.  That's basic planning though - or if sailing then, just planning to arrive at port later than usual, around 1 or 2 versus 11 or 12. But then, I'm also not one who has to be first aboard.

I was on the a Medallion cruise and witnessed people so involved in their phone that they  1: walked into the glass sliding doors,  2: missed the last step on the staircase  3:stood in the middle of a walkway trying to read their device oblivious of others walking...felt like I never left land...so sad people can't just turn it off and relax with the sea!
