Are these medals going to be colored ?

I'm not familiar with Princess so forgive me if I'm totally off base.  These medallions I guess are like Disney bands?  How close do the staff have to be to read them?  Could they walk up and down the aisle and see who is around them?  Stop to chat with top cruisers?

Sensors throughout the ship track the Medallions' (and presumably your) location at all times, unlocking your stateroom door as it approaches (and re-locking it if it goes in or goes past).

For purchases in a shop, it is a near-field device you place against a sensor at the register.

The ship also tracks crew members' location and shows them a picture and loyalty level of the passengers in their area.  It works well enough that you can order a drink poolside or from your seat in the ship's theater and it will be delivered to you.

In the dining room, you get called by name even in "Anytime Dining" (and they use the system to relay your order to the galley).

Why is it so horrible to have others know your Captain’s Circle level? Who would care? Most people probably won’t notice, or care one way or the other.

I agree.  Why people get their underwear in a knot regarding this device is amazing.  It doesn't have any more information than the cruise card on it, it isn't a medical issue, if you are having a problem letting folks know your loyalty level then put it in your pocket or somewhere else but it does unlock your door when you approach your cabin and other interesting and fun things to make your voyage more enjoyable.

Relax and enjoy the cruise.

Wow, that's a little creepy.  They know where you are every second.  Makes it easy to figure out what you like to do so they can sell that info to their partners.  I guess all the cruiselines have a lot of info already - casino card, sea card to log your drinks, when the cabin door was opened, etc., but now they know where on the ship beside your cabin you physically spend a lot of time and can focus their marketing efforts with more granularity.
It's not like we'd do anything of great interest to them, but that's still creepy to me.

It's basically nothing that they didn't already know from the cruise card but it just makes it easier to collect the data automatically.

Well, yes and no.  They don't know where you are every second without it.  Suppose they want to find you to try to sell you something?  Now, if you walk down a hall, you see someone shilling something and can go another way.  With this, they can find you.  Happens to me all the time at BJ's with the Verizon, Directv, and Home improvement folks.  (Avoiding therm, I mean.)

Don't underestimate blues, there is any number of folks who are blues once they get on the ship. Princess Cruise staff, corporate affiliates etc..... Heck I even saw a Senior VP as a blue. Nobody cares,  they really don't though, there are a few pax who hope someone  cares.

Your post doesn't really make much sense as far as being tracked to sell you things. Everyone gets confronted by photo sales, liquor drinks at dinner, spa treatments, jewelry sales, wine tasting, etc.

What makes you think just because you carry a medallion they'll be more opportunities pushed in your face?

Do you really believe they're going to take the time to find you to present some special offer?

Yes.  They already know a lot of what you like and dislike by your spending onboard, now they'll know where you hang out and can use that for upsells.  Do they like to spend time in the library?  Let's go talk to them about our new partnership with Barnes and Noble.  Now, they don't have to blast it everywhere, just to select people.  Just an example, but they're always looking for new ways to part you from your money, this makes it easier for them.  Think about FaceBook - they see what you're commenting on or even looking at and send you specific ads based on what they see.  And they keep that info forever.

It's really not much different than Facebook.

Or shopping on Walmart or Amazon.com

Or walking around town with your phone

Or paying by phone

This tech is here and it's getting more available and widely used.  I think we just need to be educated about it, and make decisions based on our needs/wants.

I guess my question would be whether or not using the medallions for targeting marketing cuts down on the amount of paper ads they deliver to your cabin.  I'm sure it can't be cheap (or particularly eco-friendly) to print out ads to leave next to the door for 1,500+ passenger cabins knowing that 90% of them are going to get thrown away unread.  In theory, if they saw that I haven't bought a single alcoholic beverage in 12 cruises they could probably figure out that I'm probably not going to be attending a wine tasting.

Then again, I've bought art on the ship before, so I've probably got a permanent place on that particular suckers list...

On the promotion material for the Medallions, they appear to be blue, will they have black for the elite, silver for the platinum?  I am not crazy about identifying my status as an Elite.  I see people in the literature with the medallion on a chain.  Really!!! I think I will just drop it into my little cruise card holder so that it is not visible.

OK. Why do you feel the need to share this?

As to question about how to get them: if you pre-register through the medallion app, they will be mailed to you if possible. If not possible, you will pick them up at checkin. If you do not pre register, you will do it at checkin, then get the medallion. To me, the only real advantage to the medallion is how much faster, smoother checkin was. If you don’t want to display your color, just put it in the old card holder, or simply in your pocket. At the cabin door, you may occasionally have to take it out and touch the receptor to open the door. Same goes if you want to use it the purchase things, same as the old card. I think you will soon get tired of pulling in and out and just wear it on the lanyard like almost everybody else. Soon, you just forget it’s there

Not based upon out last cruise on the Crown. They gave us plenty of cabin adds every day. Plus even double the amount of adds since we request 2 patters each day.

Maybe it's not inexpensive but as long as the profit's exceed their costs they'll never stop.

Except that the crew members pushing the wine tasting get incentives per sale to sign people up.

True.

The Medallions are not for targeting advertising.  Princess already has enough data to mine for that from the registers in their onboard shops and bars.

Medallions are primarily for "operational issues" such as speeding muster rollcalls (and locating those hiding in bathrooms),  improving boarding security at ports-of-call, or cutting MoB search time when a Medallion disappears from where someone could have fallen into the sea.

No, before the Medallion they only knew where you were when you purchased something or had to be scanned to get off/on the ship, at muster, etc.

They had no idea if you were in the Princess Theater, Skywalker's, the buffet, the atrium, browsing the shops, Princess Live!, etc. If you are carrying the Medallion around, they know that information now.

Marketing info about the Medallion said that your cell phone would receive notice of events that the system decided you were likely to be interested in.

If you went to Bingo once, you might receive notification every time Bingo is scheduled again.

I doubt they have reached this state of implementation yet, but it is what they "promised."

I've been on 4 Medallion cruises. My last one in May was the first time I wasn't also given a cruise card. Everything was done with the Medallion that you used to do with a cruise card. Of course this was the 1st cruise where my Medallion stopped working. No problem, they made a new one for me at the customer service desk.

It’s weird to care if people can see your captain circle status, and even weirder to think that they care.

It’s weirdest yet to answer peoples questions differently based on their captain’s circle status.

Well that is true but just what difference does it really make in the long run if they do know you are in those locations? My thinking was more along the lines of what purchases you had made on the ship.

Some people on this board seem to want to remain secretive about their location but at the same time still surf the web at home & have no problem ordering merchandise from eBay & Amazon.
