Now for something different, Look what I found, a blast from the past

With everything going on and stay at home orders, my wife and I decided to go through stuff and get rid of things we don't use. While going through our kitchen pantry, and tons of recipe books we came across this blast from the past from Royal Caribbean. A set of Royal Caribbean Miniature Dinner Menus.

 

 

 

Now if anybody know's more about the history of these please chime in. These were from my wife's parents who went on a cruise somewhere in the 1970's on Song of Norway. If you notice at the bottom of the front cover booklet they listed all 4 of Royal Caribbean's earliest ships. Inside were 15 menus and here's the great part they included recipe's in them. Some of the recipe's look fantastic. I will post a couple each day for you to enjoy. Bon Appetit !

We have some like that.  Sailing was different then.  Dinner service was French style, each item, vegetable,  meat, etc., served from a platter by the waiter to you rather than a galley prepared plate.  Life was different.

This reminds me of our first cruise on NCL’s Southward in 1979.  Food was great and service wonderful, even for lowly interior cabin passengers.  But boy did it take a lot of luggage for a week!  Main dining room was your only option with set times and large tables.

Unfortunately, I do not have menus from the "Oceanic" and believe me the menu selections were extensive and simply delicious.  Remember the opportunity to have some special dinner request, prepared table side by the Maitre D.   I can still visualize the midnight buffet and the wonderful selections of desserts and fruits.

 

The crew was all Italian and service was to die for.

 

Entertainment was simple and performed by the CD staff.  Gambling was comprised of bingo and horse racing by the pool deck.  Had many opportunities to bid on those wooden horses with funny foreign names.😁

My father sailed from Liverpool to NY in 1913.I have a copy of a dinner menu.The food listed on the menu is better than anything on a 2020 menu.

Oh how different times were.  The roster could not happen now.  Just would not pass data protection.  

 

And has anyone noticed that there is nothing for a vegetarian.  Of course I am sure people could ask - but they were not the norm.  

 

Blue Nun wine.  Oh brings back memories. 

 

And what about the picture in the first post.  Not a great picture for people on a cruise, but times were different.

The front page was basically a pocket folder with the menus in the inside pocket. The front did not scan very well but the Royal Caribbean logo was raised so that is why I think they went with a solid color, in this case white. I thought the same thing when I saw "Blue Nun." That was my parent's favorite wine.
