The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention publishes travel advice, warnings and recommendations related to COVID-19, including for travel on cruise ships, which you should consult at CDC Cruise Ship Travel website before confirming a reservation.

If a threshold of COVID-19 is detected onboard, the voyage will be ended, the ship returned to the port of embarkation, and your subsequent travel or return home may be restricted or delayed.

Saw this when I logged in this morning.  Geeez....I thought things were getting better, especially if you're vaccinated.

The link to the CDC site goes to the page that shows the Level 4 (do not travel) at the top.  I do hope that Princess shares what the definition of "threshold" means so that we can all judge for ourselves if it is worth the risk of going.  Since they may have up to 5% of unvaccinated passengers and crew onboard, knowing that threshold becomes key.

I also wonder what Princess considers the threshold.  Although our 1st cruise back on a Princess ship is 6 months away, I am not too keen on having to be tested prior to boarding, especially as DH and I are fully vaccinated.  That could be a deal-breaker for us and others.

Nothing more to do for now but stay cautiously optimistic.

Sounds like CYA stuff from the CDC, and the cruise lines have to comply.

As other have said, what the threshold  is set at is an important issue.

The more interesting part is this:

If you are not fully vaccinated:

  • Get tested 3–5 days after your trip.
  • If your test is positive, isolate yourself to protect others from getting infected.
  • Self-monitor for COVID-19 symptoms for 14 days after travel; isolate and get tested if you develop symptoms.
  • Stay home and self-quarantine for 7 days after cruise travel, even if you test negative. [emphasis added]
  • If you do not get tested, stay home and self-quarantine for 10 days after cruise travel.
  • Avoid being around people who are at increased risk for severe illness for 14 days, whether you get tested or not.

If you are fully vaccinated:

  • Get tested 3–5 days after your trip. [emphasis added]
  • If your test is positive, isolate yourself to protect others from getting infected.
  • Self-monitor for COVID-19 symptoms for 14 days after travel; isolate and get tested if you develop symptoms.
  • You do NOT need to stay home and self-quarantine after cruise travel.

So, everybody should test after the cruise, non-vaccinated need to quarantine for 7 days no matter what.

That's a pretty big assumption that every passenger will be going directly home after their cruise ends. What about folks that plan a few days post cruise? And who would monitor/enforce this? Or is it "voluntary"?

Wishful thinking/recommendations!

1. It says "trip", not "cruise", so that's pretty inclusive of what you were referring to.

2. Monitor / enforce? Not sure that's gonna happen. But that doesn't mean one shouldn't do it anyway.

Personally, I'm adding getting the test to my calendar after the cruise. Vaccinated.

This piece says cruise travel....

Everyone forgets that there is already a similar precedent for this and that's norovirus. Princess has done the same thing so many times, terminating a voyage early and sailing back to homeport ahead of time. Of course, COVID is still a novel virus so the threshold is stricter for now and the statement Princess put here is likely designed to motivate guests to get vaccinated and not try to be Patient 0. I don't anticipate the policy to relax for quite some time because Princess is the last brand to need another huge PR crisis.

But has anything been set for real, as opposed to test, cruises?

Rather unlikely that the CDC will change for restricted cruises (they term for "real" cruises).

After all the CDC is unlikely to increase a 1.5% number for passengers and 1% for crew, and the cruise lines will not want to decrease it.

The real question is will the plan allow the next cruise to occur if there are any cases on the previous cruise, especially among the crew.

If one is fully vaccinated, there is no need to get tested unless one has some symptoms.  Why would one get tested?  Same would apply for any travel.  Leave it up to the CDC to be over cautious.

That page does not appear to have been updated for a while.  Pretty sure that testing for vaccinated passengers has been removed from the updated CSO instructions.  It's a work in progress.

sorry it reminds me of a a scene from Monty Python's Meaning of Life

School Teacher

All right, settle down. Settle down... Now, before I begin the lesson, will those of you who are playing in the match this afternoon move your clothes down onto the lower peg immediately after lunch, before you write your letter home, if you're not getting your hair cut, unless you've got a younger brother who is going out this weekend as the guest of another boy, in which case, collect his note before lunch, put it in your letter after you've had your hair cut, and make sure he moves your clothes down onto the lower peg for you. Now...

Princess will follow (at least for cruises that include a USA port) CDC requirements.

The CDC is constantly changing what will be required in the way of pre-testing for Covid-19, social distancing on a ship, mask wearing on a ship, requirements for ship sponsored excursions, etc.

Because the requirements are changing so frequently (and lately changing for the better for cruisers who are vaccinated), Princess cannot yet give definitive answers for the questions being discussed in this thread.
