Many have been wondering whether Celebrity would extend the October 31 date for their COVID 19 Assistance Program.  Indeed they have.  It now extends to 31 December 2021 sailings.

Book a Celebrity cruise
that’s sailing on or
before December 31, 2021

and you’ll have the
following reassurance
at no extra charge

COVID19 ASSISTANCE PROVIDES THE FOLLOWING REASSURANCE AT NO EXTRA CHARGE:

  • 100% cruise fare refund for you, and your Travelling Party, if any of you test positive for COVID-19 within 14 days prior to the cruise or at the boarding terminal.
  • Pro-rated cruise fare refund for anyone who has their cruise cut short due to testing positive for COVID-19 or being suspected of having COVID-19 during the cruise.
  • If you test positive for COVID-19 during the cruise, Celebrity Cruises will cover the costs of COVID-19 related medical treatment onboard, any required land-based quarantine, and travel home for you and your Travelling Party.

Thanks, Chris.  Time to book another cruise or two!

Got 'em booked already -- for November -- so we're definitely 2X beneficiaries of the change.  Added to the insurance we already had, we're pretty well covered now.

That’s good news…I wonder if they will extend it again…we don’t sail until February..it made me more comfortable when we sailed in July with that policy in place..

It is a good policy from the passenger’s point of view. It certainly relieves a lot of the uncertainty and worry about the expense involved in testing positive before embarkation or during the cruise.

On the other hand, it is expensive for the company to provide charter jets, even at a contract rate. It is a balancing act between encouraging people to cruise and returning to profitability.

One bit of relief it offers is for B2B cruisers who get tossed at the turn for their 2nd (or 3rd, etc) leg due to a contact trace issue.  It's one thing to quarantine aboard for a couple of days during a cruise, but quite another to discover that even after a series of negative tests, you and your suitcases will be left behind at the turn.  Now the cruise costs for the additional leg(s) in such event will be reimbursed through all of 2021.

I hope it is extended into 2022 as well. It is so much more difficult to decide which and what travel insurance is needed these days. I never even thought about a med evac policy or out of US medical until Covid. Still researching for our early 2022 trip.

Just so you know - medical evacuation will not fly you home just because you test positive the way Celebrity assistance does. The evacuation you get with a comprehensive policy is hospital to hospital when the nearest facility is not adequate to care for you or if you need extended care.  A separate evacuation only policy is the same except you have more control in the decision making. It is unlikely that Covid would require that kind of transfer, but the coverage is good to have for any medical emergency.

Your own insurance may provide some out-of-country coverage. There is a wide range of possibilities, but check that first. It will help you decide how much medical you need.

This is great news— much appreciated, Celebrity!

One question: If you test positive during your cruise and must be disembarked, how is it determined whether you must quarantine in a hotel or are able to be flown home directly?  Thoughts?

So far, everyone has been returned home except those cruising to or from countries that require quarantine by law before onward travel. I believe that is the case with Greece. There is a footnote in the policy about it.

I read a post of at least one family required to quarantine in Spain because one of them tested positive at embarkation. That was on RCI, but they have the same assistance  plan as Celebrity.

If Celebrity can provide immediate private transportation, which they seem to have been able to do, they're managing without quarantine.  In the event that for some reason you would have to return on a commercial flight, you'd probably be quarantined in that instance.  Hope so, anyway.

If someone tested positive during Caribbean cruise and will require monoclonal treatment, will Celebrity provide immediate air transport back to Florida? Or they will have treatment on board? Does anyone know?

All the cases I’ve read about have been flown home shortly after testing positive. I’m not privy to details and don’t claim to know about every instance, but it appears that Celebrity reacts in a timely manner.

I have no information about monoclonal treatment on board.

Glad to see this - and hoping very much it gets extended once again into 2022.  It's a difficult (and expensive) proposition for the cruise lines for sure.  And of course also for passengers.   And in addition for the ports of call!  If Celebrity won't fly you home privately, what happens to you?  Will the ports agree to quarantine and/or treat Covid patients found to be positive while sailing?  I have to guess many will never agree to that.  A real quandary for the cruise lines.  And how many people will cancel, or not book, a cruise if that policy is no longer in place?  Insurance to cover the kind of care and transport you may need in that situation can be quite expensive and may be hard to find due to exclusions for pandemics, etc..
