Edge Transatlantic Testing positive for Covid

Up until yesterday every morning announcement from the Captain said that there were no cases of Covid in either the crew of the passengers.
Yesterday he announced that there were two positive crew members and one passenger. The close contacts had been informed and were now part of the test every morning brigade.
Last night my husband had a headache. He suffers from ocular migraines from time to time and we thought we should wait until morning before asking the Medical staff to come to our suite and test him.
This morning we arrived in Madiera and the  headache was still a problem and had moved to his sinuses.
Other than that he felt fine. We had noticed a few other diners in Luminae coughing and blowing their noses and there was a woman in the Retreat who was coughing pretty actively and not bothering to leave the area.
So we called the Medical Department. They sent a nurse to the suite and she took his vitals and performed a PCR test.
it seemed to take forever to get the results, but that was probably more due to our impatience.

He tested positive.
They then sent a Medical team to test me. I tested negative.

They sent a hazmat suited and hooded employee to escort him to his home for the next 5+ days.
He was placed in a C-3 Infinite balcony cabin on Deck 12.
I thank the people who came before us and obviously helped enact the change from Ocean View for Isolation to at least a balcony.
Tonight we both ordered room service and actually ordered the same food.
We did the right thing just like JetBlue did.
We have a lot of loose threads to take care of though.
We have booked on Regal Princess for  May 7. We disembark the Edge on May 6.
We have three weeks on the Regal and have our flight back home on May 29.
I booked the flight on the very first day the flights opened.
I paid an insanely low price for the First class return tickets.
I need to find out our options.
We disembarked a 60 day Cunard South America cruise on March 17, 2020. That was the day that the country shut down. "
When we entered the embarkation area on April 22 of this year  I could not stop crying. I was so joyous to be doing what we love.
We have had some serious health issues this past year. We have no idea how much time anyone of us has left. So we are NOT ready to give up cruising.
I just wish that there were a better way to handle the covid stuff.
I mentioned on an earlier thread that when I had the flu in 2018, despite having the "Senior Citizen double trouble shot" and a bout of the flu in January at home, we were on the Queen Elizabeth World Cruise. I went to the Medical center and asked to be seen. I was quarantined to my suite and visited twice a day. We were off the coast of Australia. There were quite a few others who were ill as well. Not everyone went to the Medical Center. I have a feeling that this is the same on every voyage.
So I just wanted to update regarding the Covid situation on THIS Transatlantic.

Where did your cruise originate?

Fort Lauderdale.
I am beginning to wonder about the workers at the Port.
If you read enough Edge boards, there seems to be a trend that people test positive on day 7 or 8, usually after they depart the ship.

Sorry to hear the OP news.

Good  your husb got an inf balc rm rather than an interior.

Infinite balc gives access to  outdoors sort of..good light and fresh air. You have a great attitude..hope all works out.

We will only book shortest cruises possible..just in case we are confined

@bananavan: I swear I'm not plugging and playing, but I'm sorry this happened to your husband. I hope he gets well soon. I hope you can stay virus free and symptom free 🙏. I hope all your issues get resolved to your satisfaction. And thank you for sharing your experience. Please continue to do so.

What do the port workers play?  We have done 5 cruises out of Fort Lauderdale

and the only port staff we have been within 6’ of for more than 2 minutes was the person us checking us in.  On departing we never got close to a port worker except to the person who was manning the facial recognition machine and that was about 15 seconds of encounter.

With masks no longer required on airplanes, and plane flying full that is a strong point of potential exposure.  We flew home Saturday on a full plane and very few had masks.  We masked in the terminal and on the plane.  Tuesday morning DH had score throat, headache & tested positive.  He spent far more time next to tge same unmasked people on the plane than he did in the entire cruise.  I tested negative and was seated in a different area of the plane.

@jelayneIt's impossible to know when or where you were in contact with someone so that you tested positive. We were fine in October, pre Omicron. We were fine on our 11 day March cruise and  2 days pre cruise in FLL. Wore masks on the plane and airports. Tested positive 5 days after getting home. Luckily it was mild for both of us. Hope you recover quickly.

Thank you very much for the info Bananavan!

Glad to hear they are giving balcony cabin.

Here is why I am so interested in what you have to say and I am looking forward to you keeping this thread going. It just so happens that my wife and I are getting on the Edge in Rome on May 6th. We also have a Sunset Veranda on Deck 12.

Is Deck 12 the current quarantine deck ? Very curious?

Any and all details are greatly appreciated!

Thank You!

So glad to hear Celebrity has heard us and is allowing quarantined passengers a breath of fresh air. Mental health is an important factor to be considered in caring for the Covid positive passengers. If this continues ( quarantining in a balcony cabin), I will reconsider my fall cruise out of Rome.

I totally understand what you are saying.
We have a driver who brings us to the port.
There are many ways to become infected.
My point is that it is extremely odd that people seem to test positive after about 6-8 days.
We are at 40% capacity.
We had no stops until yesterday.
Neither my husband nor I have taken part in any activities other than attending the concerts while socially distancing.
The where and how is tough to figure out.

Yours is a sunset veranda. He is in a port side C-3.
At this point we have no idea how many people are in quarantine.
We did not have an update yesterday because the ship had docked in Madiera.
I will see what I can find out though.

Only other person I know who has ocular migraines.

They are agony, as you well know.
I also have them as does our 45 year old daughter.
Of course, this time around it was not ocular in nature.

We NORMALLY (says with fond memories) book the longest cruises possible. We have completed two World Cruises with Cunard and have one planned for next year.
For us, and this is only for us and not said with any judgement, the short cruises are not how we like t cruise.
That being said, I will most likely be cancelling the World Cruise in January.
IT is not just the quarantine aspect but also the fear that we might become ill so far from home.
We are in a quandary as to how we will get home from Rome at this point.
We are four weeks away from that flight. Who knows what might happen in the meantime?

I’m on the Edge Transatlantic as well (fantastic cruise, BTW!). Capt’n Costas’ announcement this morning was 6 passengers and 1 crew in isolation. For the ship’s population that comes to 0.47%. As we only have ports the rest of the cruise, I don’t believe there will be any more daily update announcements.

With the current variation as highly transmissible as it is, I personally think the mental torture of trying to “figure out” where it was contracted is pointless.

@bananavan, I’m 🙏 your hubby recovers soon, and you remain negative and asymptomatic. Off topic, but a friend traveling with us os also on the Regal Princess May 7 sailing for 21-days and would like to meet you as she will be traveling solo. You can contact Linda in stateroom 11144. She’d love to hear from you. 😊

I don’t think Bananavan will be on that sailing as they likely will be denied boarding having tested positive recently. I believe their concern is what they are going to do about their flight home from Rome in 4 weeks.

I know many don't like to hear it but wearing a mask in the taxi, at the airport, in the airplane etc helps a lot. Furher, self awareness is important as well, hence as you mentioned this caughing person should have done a COVID test before caughing her germs all over the place, unfortunately many people are selfish an are not thinking of others. So once again it spreads from the crew to the passengers.

How do you reach that conclusion? Passengers are routinely tested once 2 days pre cruise. Crew are tested every week. Passengers are not obliged to wear masks, crew have to wear them at all times when working.

I am sorry that your DH tested positive, but very happy to hear that he has fresh air and a view.  You both have cruised the world and must have so many wonderful memories.  This is one of those times that is out of your control, so please take care and do what is best for both of you.
