Stingray spotted on Cococay

Decent size (2 ft not counting the tail) near south beach. Definitely do the "stingray shuffle" while getting into the water.

We have seen stingrays at South Beach many times.  We have seen lemon sharks too.

They hired him recently to enhance the "natural feeling" of the island!👍

In July we saw a lemon shark.  The lifeguards suddenly got everyone out of the water and said there was a hammerhead shark.  We saw the fin zip across the water, I had no idea they moved that fast.

We were at the Ocean Villas at NCL Great Stirrup Cay, had a Stingray swim by us while on the swing

Last March, my wife was sitting in shallow water and had one swim right up to her. Needless to say, she was pretty freaked out initially. 🙂

Extremely common for there to be both sting rays and lemon sharks.

The first time I ever saw a stingray was in 2003 snorkeling at Coco Cay. There were bunches of them then. I used a whole waterproof disposable camera taking pictures of rays and eels.

 

In the 20 years since then, I’ve moved close enough to the gulf coast that day trips to the beach are a common occurrence and we're used to seeing sharks and rays all the time. For those unfamiliar with saltwater predators, there’s a very easy way to tell if there are sharks in the water:

 

1) Wade out into the water until you’re about knee deep.

2) Bend at the waist and put your hands into the water.

3) Make a cup shape with your hands.

4) Bring the water up to your face and stick your tongue into the water in your hands.

 

If it tastes salty, there are sharks in the water.

Have also seen quite a few stingrays there. In October,  we saw a manatee alongside the boat. That was a first for us at Coco Cay.

Small harmless lemon sharks, but it is a bit of a jolt for a second or two when you see one swim by your legs for the first time.

This kind of reminds me of coyote sightings on Nextdoor. One seems to pop up every other day. Stingrays live there. Coyotes live here. It is not uncommon to see them. ☺️

Ya mean like this one.........be sure and walk with a shuffle while there if you pick up your feet you could step on one.
