DallasGuy75219 Posted December 17, 2023 #1 Share Posted December 17, 2023 So the pretty decorated layer cakes are now for display only. They're putting out pre-sliced sheet cakes that don't exactly taste like the layer cakes used to.
staceyglow Posted December 17, 2023 #2 Share Posted December 17, 2023 Yes, I have seen this on several ships. My guess is that this is a decision made by either the head baker or the head chef.
BecT Posted December 17, 2023 #3 Share Posted December 17, 2023 Just got off Spirit today. I noticed the same thing. I like their German chocolate cake but they typically have too much frosting. With the normal layered cake I could remove most of the frosting. With the new version the cake itself was so thin I couldn't separate the frosting which was disappointing. My husband got a piece of the red velvet cake but it was still the layer cake. He was served a ridiculously oversized piece but was mostly tasteless frosting so it was wasted. I think Carnival is trying to find the right balance while minimizing waste. Kind of unrelated but on the positive side, we enjoyed several of the new offerings in the main dining room. It was especially pleasant to see different entree sized salad offerings at dinner. Many times if I eat lunch in the buffet I'm not super hungry so those entree salads were a welcome addition. 3
mz-s Posted December 17, 2023 #4 Share Posted December 17, 2023 That's a shame, the cakes used to be good.
BecT Posted December 17, 2023 #5 Share Posted December 17, 2023 I just noticed the picture of the German chocolate cake. The sheet cake on Spirit did not look the same. It was about the same height but had 3-4 layers to it more like what you would see as a petit-four. The posted picture looks a lot better than what I got. momof3cruisers Posted December 18, 2023 #10 Share Posted December 18, 2023 That’s a bummer. Ten days ago the regular cakes were still available on Conquest.
Rudyard Posted December 18, 2023 #11 Share Posted December 18, 2023 We had the regular cakes on Breeze last week. They were slicing them thin enough to see through, but at least they were the original cakes.

mz-s Posted December 18, 2023 #13 Share Posted December 18, 2023 Frankly on my last cruise I liked the sheet cakes on the dinner buffet better than the layer cakes they served for lunch, which is sad because the layer cakes used to be a highlight of the included food on Carnival.

Exactly, none of those changes (and they are simply changes, made to make the cruise line as efficient as possible without unduly raising fares) severely impacts the overall cruise experience. We had just as a good of a time on Glory this past April as we did on Pride in 2012. 3

geovet Posted December 18, 2023 #18 Share Posted December 18, 2023 I like the small servings. I always asked to give me a thin slice anyway. My typical buffet strategy is to sample first to see what l like. I think there was a lot of wast previously, seeing people with several large servings of the large cakes. ps not happy with omelette cut back. Just a bad move!
geovet Posted December 18, 2023 #19 Share Posted December 18, 2023 I use to love their cookies over most of the cake, but they are not the same sadly and now have to pass them up.

Rare MisterOJ2 Posted December 18, 2023 #21 Share Posted December 18, 2023 I always thought the cakes looked so good, and then was underwhelmed by the way they tasted. The last couple cruises I've been on, I barely ate any cake from Lido.

Despegue Posted December 18, 2023 #23 Share Posted December 18, 2023 But why only cakes and cookies? Are there no pastries like eclairs, tompousse, fruit tarts, chocolate-mousses, puddings, bavarois ??!!

Sometimes they serve mousse and pudding and jello at the sweet spot on the buffet. But generally, it's just cakes and cookies.
