  1. Good evening!  Today, at the last minute, Craig took Summer north to Show Low. His DS’s daughter and family were visiting from California and all the girls were wanting to see each other. Not sure how long they are staying.

    We have been to Ketchikan 4 times, most recently a year ago in May on the lovely Volendam.

    It’s one of my favorite Alaskan ports and a great place to shop for souvenirs.

    Have a good evening!

    OK girls, what ingredient in my recipe do you not like?

    Try it once with all fresh ingredients.

    My stepmother used to make "chop suey" from cans. It was disgusting. And worse, her meat choice was hamburger!! So many times I would stop at McDonald's before I came home. She was the worst cook in the world.

    I like all your ingredients and agree with you that you should use all fresh ingredients.

    We're on the same page, Terry!  When we were kids we knew not to say we didn't like something.  It was eat it or go hungry.  Mom was not afraid to remind us that she was not a short order cook.

    I have been to the town in Ireland where my mom's grandparents came from several times.  I also took my mom to the town where her father was born.  When he was born it was Austria, but it is now the Czech Republic.

    Teenagers are here to make sure we are worthy of leadership.  Constant testing.  It is good that you and Craig are there for her.  You wouldn't have to coax me to get in the pool.

    Thank you Debbie!  We will have to see what happens next.  I’m taking it day by day. I wish you were here to enjoy our pool but I don’t think you would like our weather.

    I keep the AC around 85 as I just hate cold blowing air.  Much too warm for most of my friends!

    We keep ours at 79 which is very comfortable except when I’m cooking or baking and then I just turn it down to 78. Craig doesn’t like cold blowing air either and complains when I have it on 79. Problem is that we have two stories with the main bedroom and bathroom on the second floor so it gets hot up there. I can’t stand blowing air while I sleep so no fans and do turn the A/C down at night.

  4. Good early afternoon!  Happy Friday!  Craig put out the new flag he just bought early this morning.  I don’t think I’ve ever had Chop Suey. I have a few books on my DM’s family history that she gave me recently. Very interesting. A relative, I believe one of her aunts, wrote one of the books and even went to the small town in England where distant relatives lived and were buried. She even has some pictures.

    We have our DGD here for a while. It’s summertime and not much for her to do except get in trouble while DS and his SO are working. They caught her with a boy they didn’t want her seeing and things went south so we are trying to keep her busy. I am teaching her how to make the no knead bread she loves so much. Craig has been taking her on errands and bought her a book to read. Hopefully I can get her in the pool for some exercise.

    Bon Voyage @Lady Hudson!

    Safe travels home @Cruzin Terri!

    Roy @rafinmd, thinking of you today while you have your medical tests and your DB’s Heavenly Birthday.

    Have a great day everyone!

    etc.  In fact, I went to the "Demon Chef" - Alvin Leung's - who is a judge on Masterchef Canada, restaurant in Hong Kong and reserved the chef's table in 2015.  OMG!! He was there and so he was the one cooking for me. It is a memory I will cherish. A pic of him and I:

    Sorry for the long post.  @Cruzin Terri I hope you get home safe.  And thoughts for all those in FL with your flooding.  Stay Safe.

    Have a great day everyone!!

    Pennie, he doesn’t look so intimidating in your picture!  And no purple/blue hair. What a great memory!

  6. Good morning and Happy Thursday. I have seen axe throwing on TV and don’t think that I’ll ever try it myself. I try not to be a klutz in the kitchen, just take it slow because of my arthritis.

    I like radishes, especially in tacos and salads. I’ve never had them cooked. I’m thinking about making yesterday’s meal next week. Debbie @dfish, did you make it yesterday?  Let me know what you thought. Today I need to make something with some Costco rotisserie chicken breast, I haven’t decided what yet but I’m leaning toward making sandwiches since I have bread left from making BLT’s. BLT’s are a favorite summertime meal for me.

    I’m not sure if I’d like the drink or wine. I haven’t been to Bruge. It looks beautiful.

    Ann @Vict0riann, so good to read that your surgery is soon. I’m thinking about you and hope your recovery is quick.

    Joy @Seasick Sailor, I’m praying for Allen and know with your good cooking he will gain the one lb he needs to gain.

    Have a great day everyone!

  7. Good evening. Today was warm and we are getting into our summer routine of pool time at 6:30. Craig reads while I paddle around. I think I like my new phone.  It has taken most of the day to reset some settings, like my ringtone. At least I can use the app for our new car. It has a remote start that will come in handy during the hot summer days. It also tells us about service that is due.

    Terri @Cruzin Terri, if I was in your situation I would just plan on staying where you are for a few days just to be safe. No need stressing out on your journey home.

    @erewhon, congratulations on your 5 year anniversary, I hope you celebrated today.

    I am amazed that I’m the only person here who has been to the port today. Wish I could have posted pictures. I wouldn’t plan a cruise just to stop there but I was really impressed with the Columbus memorial.

    Good night all!

  8. Good morning and Happy Wednesday. I finally have my new phone but am really upset about the in store customer service. I’ll get over it but will definitely write the company.

    Happy Birthday @catmando!!  Enjoy your special day!

    Surprisingly I have been to today’s port. I just can’t remember if it was in 1999 or 2000. It was on the Veendam and I really think it was 1999 and it’s possible that it was the cruise for our 25th anniversary. The cruise was out of San Juan and Santo Domingo was the first port. I remember that the harbor was very trashy, full of floating trash. We took a tour to the Christopher Columbus memorial. It’s a huge memorial but beautiful. Allegedly, Columbus is buried in a tomb there. I don’t have pictures, at that time Craig took mostly video. I think we went somewhere else on the tour but don’t remember.

    I like falafel but have never made them from scratch. Terry @smitty34877, I’ve heard that they come out better using dried chickpeas. Takes longer but there is something about the texture, just like with hummus. I’ve been wanting to make Molly Yeh’s recipe.
    For some reason my cut and paste isn’t working or I’d post the recipe. She also has a recipe for falafel waffles that look really good.

    I would like to try the meal suggestion, but I don’t have all the ingredients. Not sure what I’m making today but it’ll be something easy.

    Have a great day everyone!

    Sharon, it’s so nice to hear you mention the cruise we first met!  We’re doing well, but not cruising as much as we once did.  We may call it aging out?  I haven’t posted for a while, and don’t read as often because I was dropped for not recognizing my password!  But now I’m back and may post again.

    Pat, so good to hear from you!  I hope you post more often. Please give Bob my best.

    Good grief, Sharon!  What did you have to eat or drink last night before you went to bed?  Sue says to bring some along because it is obviously more fun than anything we take.

    Joy, I am so glad you were able to break the barrier of estrangement.   Life is too short for that, especially with a sibling.

    I don’t remember what I ate but gosh that dream was vivid and crazy.

    Oh Sharon, I'm laughing so hard now.  I have some crazy dreams too, but I especially am laughing that your cabin turned out to be the only bar/lounge!!  What a hoot!

    I'm also a little jealous that I won't be on your cruise -- you're all going to have a ball!

    Thank you Lenda!  It went well, I was in and out in under an hour.  The only thing that hurts is my jaw from keeping it open so long.

    Carolyn, I wish you were on the cruise too!  But don’t you have a Grand World cruise in January?  I’m envious of that!

  10. Good morning and Happy Monday. Debbie @dfish, I feel for you about Sunday nights sleeping except mine is opposite, I get to sleep just fine but wake up too early. I’ve been able to get back to sleep after being awake a few hours. When I was working I didn’t have enough time to do that. This morning I was able to sleep until 8:00, and I had some crazy dreams. We were on our August cruise and I was all settled into my inside cabin but two people showed up, it was a shared cabin!  (Must be because of that solo cabin thread.). I was really upset and to top it all off the cabin turned out to also be the only bar/lounge onboard!  We were all stuffed in there like sardines. What was in my mind beats me.

    Happy Birthday Denise!!  @Denise T   Enjoy your special day and I hope you find a way to celebrate.

    Bruce @aliaschief, welcome home!

    Sandi @StLouisCruisers, I think what you did with the relatives was a brave move and even though it might still be a strained relationship it proves that you did it for Mrs Relative.

    Good days for today. I do prefer pencils but can’t do without a pen when signing something or writing a check. I love my HAL pens and Craig asked me to get a few extra on our last cruise, however I think customer service caught on. 😉

    The meal sounds good and so does the wine but not at that price. I make iced tea all the time and I use my Kuerig. I make three kinds, regular, decaf, and mango. TJ’s has a seasonal mango tea that Craig can’t live without.   He likes it both hot and cold. I make the regular and decaf with Luzianne for myself.

    We have been to Malta and fell in love with it. I wish we could go back. I don’t have pictures. This is what I wrote previously and thanks to Sandi for the link.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~
    We were in Valletta on the Rotterdam May 2001. I accidentally broke my camera so I don’t have pictures but Craig took video. We went to St John’s Co Cathedral and walked around a lot. It was interesting seeing all the narrow pedestrian streets, most of which were sloping or stairs like the one in Sandi’s picture.  We also went to a hard to find church called St Paul’s Shipwreck. Paul the Apostle shipwrecked at Malta and is considered a spiritual father to the Maltese. It has a few relics of St Paul. A friend of ours asked us to seek it out and I brought him back some postcards. Then we had a lovely lunch in a restaurant that was like a wine cellar.  Thanks to everyone who posted pictures.
    I appreciate all the pictures especially of the Co Cathedral and the tapestries. This was the cruise we met Bob & Pat @bobpatj  I haven’t seen Pat post in a long time. I hope they are okay. I believe @sailingdutchymight know them.
    @Sharon in AZ, Sharon, after the dreadful cottage cheese looking lobster, I made sure to always ask for broiled. And I'm so happy you @dfish and Sue will join in Boston. (Great lobster!) 😉
    Yes Joy, that cottage cheese lobster looked icky, sorry. Did you send it back?  I always order the broiled, I think it has more flavor. Best ever was in the Pinnacle Grill October 2022 during our Canada to Florida repositioning cruise. We had a huge Daily group that Rich set up.
    It was huge!  And so yummy!!  And I couldn’t eat it all so I offered Carolyn @Cruising-along some and she loved it too.
    I am looking forward to some really good lobster in August!  We have 2 dinners in the Pinnacle Grill and I might just have the supplement lobster. And I seem to remember that you said the small ones in the MDR are not as good.
  12. Good morning and Happy Sunday. Yesterday wasn’t as oppressively hot as Friday was and I think today will be even better at about 101.
    Good days to celebrate and I love shrimp and rice, especially fried rice. But today I think I’m making sausage and peppers. I have leftover sausage from making pizza and need to use it up. I’ll pass on the drink. I’ve only had Irish coffee once and didn’t like it.
    I haven’t been to Montego Bay, only Ocho Rios. And would prefer to never go again. Annie @marshhawk, it sounds like you enjoyed your all inclusive there and I don’t ever remember you mentioning it before.
    Terri @Cruzin Terri, enjoy the beach and your book!  You deserve a relaxing day. You’ll have to tell us how the buffet lunch was.
    Jacqui @kazu, I think it’s good to know your options for the future. My DM loves her place and is more active than ever.  Hugs to you as you contemplate.
    said yesterday, we decided to arrive in Boston a day early so we can have a full day there. After last years fiasco in April trying to get to Fort Lauderdale because of their flooding and the recent flight delays I had in Dallas I feel much better with an extra day as a buffer.  I also changed my flight to go through Phoenix instead of Dallas. I’m getting excited!
  13. Good morning and Happy Saturday. Yesterday was so hot that I had no desire to get in the pool. I’m hoping I feel like it today. Right now it’s 90 and it’s supposed to be about 104 later.
    All good things to celebrate. I’ve heard of the sauce that is part of the the meal suggestion but never had it. I think we will have leftover quiche and salad today. Yesterday I made a chef’s salad with lots of yummy goodies in it and will do the same thing today.
    Bon Voyage @Suslor and @swin26!!
  14. Elizabeth @Haljo1935! Oh my goodness. Kidney stones!  Ouch. Feel better soon.
    Pennie @Nickelpenny, I think I know what street your incident happened on and no wonder because it’s more narrow there too. What a crummy way to spend time in this heat. I’m glad you are going to have your earlobe done, she’s the best.
    Lenda @Quartzsite Cruiser, sorry about the car battery. I know heat has a lot to do with battery life but not 2 months. But good that you were somewhere that you could get help with it.
  15. Good evening everyone from a hot Tucson. It’s 104 at 6:45pm!
     I read the Daily a bit disjointed today so might have missed something. I started reading on my iPad and after lunch read on my phone. Only now did I realize I missed an entire page.
    Annie @marshhawk, hugs to you.
    Joy @Seasick Sailor, that rock is all craggy and rough. No wonder your gash was infected. I hope it heals quickly.
    Debbie @dfish, WOW, your cake is beautiful. Sorry it’s dry. I made a German Chocolate cake once that turned out dry and the only thing I could figure out was that I might have over baked it.
    Thanks to everyone who posted pictures of the port.
    Bruce @aliaschief, how wonderful to have Monaco as your last port before you disembark your world cruise. I remember going there in 2000 and walking through the port area where all the yachts are.
    Have a good evening!
  16. Good evening from this baby boomer. There’s a new Master Chef with different generations and it’s hard to keep up with all the “Gen’s”. Gen Z, Gen X. I like the name of our generation.
    Good morning, Dailyites, and thanks for the news!  Pat leaves this afternoon, so today will be busy, but I just wanted to mention urinary crystals to @Sharon in AZ - as a reason for incontinence in cats - it can be terribly painful for them.  I wonder if a new vet might not have checked that?  Blue is a cat, right?  In dogs it might be that their anal glands need expressing... (TMI?)
    Ann, no he’s a dog. The new doctor was wonderful and was able to get enough to do a urinalysis and it was normal. He’s actually a lot better today, amazing after only 3 treatments of the ointment.
    Thank you all for thinking of him. I know it’s not a normal topic but our pets are our babies!  Sorry if it’s been TMI.
    How to teach a cat to purr.
    With the kitten, hold them close, pet them softly and make a purring noise.  They associate the good feeling with the purring.
    With Fawn,  Little Red, her friend was a purrer.  She did not know how.  I would pet him, he would purr, and then I would pet her,  Pet him, purr, pet her, pet him, he purred....and finally she associated the petting with purring.  Cats that are feral usually dont purr, but i have pet a bobcat, and he purred just fine..
    Animal rescue outside Carlsbad NM back in the mid 70's.
    I opened the door and a stray ran in, I guess he didn't know who lived here, because he tried to hide under the sofa.  Chuck weet and and didn't watch the door, and Furnando escaped.  It's been a cat's day. He yelled at him to get him back.
    Wow Annie that’s amazing!  You truly are a cat whisperer.
  20. Good afternoon!
    I got so excited when my new phone arrived. But it turned out to be the wrong one. The rep ordered the wrong size, I ordered a plus. So it’ll be a few days. Craig decided to get a new one too.
    I am taking Blue to the vet later this afternoon. I think he has a bladder infection or UTI. We’ll see. Not sure how they get urine samples.
    I changed our menu for today from pizza to the Olive Garden take home entree I got yesterday. They are just $6 and enough for two.
  21. Good morning and Happy Tuesday. There is a heat dome in the west and that’s why @LambKnuckles forecast looks so bad. Also really bad is California. Our area will be later this week. Be safe everyone!
    Yesterday DM had an appointment and we went to Olive Garden for lunch. It was really enjoyable. After I dropped her off I ran errands and ordered a new iPhone. I should get it tomorrow. I really need one. Mine is so old that I am unable to download certain apps and I really need it for the new car. Craig might get one too since they were on sale.
    Good days today. I wish I had cats, I really miss having one. Awareness about protecting children is important.
    I like the MOD but ask for it scrambled together and usually get chopped bacon, spinach and cream cheese. If anyone remembers The Good Earth restaurant it’s a take off of theirs.  The dining room on a BHB does a good job when I order it. I don’t like it when the ingredients are just inside the folded omelette.
    Pennie @Nickelpenny, I got the itinerary change for next year’s cruise and will have to do some research.  Right now I’m more focused on my August cruise.
    Annie @marshhawk, I’m enjoying reading about the kittens and would love to see a picture. And how do you teach a kitten to purr?
     I always feel like I’m missing commenting about people so please know I think about everyone when I’m reading your posts. Prayers for those in pain and going through rough times.
    Have a great day everyone!
