Rare LawDog61 Posted March 14, 2018 #1 Share Posted March 14, 2018 We are having a delayed departure from Monterey ( 7 day California coastal) -an issue with one of the propulsion units. The Captain made the announcement about an hour ago- no further info yet.

capriccio Posted March 14, 2018 #11 Share Posted March 14, 2018 Another cruiser is blogging from this cruise on this thread: https://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2610936. His most recent remarks on the propulsion problem: "During dinner the captain informed us of an issue with the starboard motor which had delayed our departure. After about 2 hours, the captain reported that the “small issue” was resolved and we set off toward San Diego. With a sea day scheduled for Wednesday, top speed is not needed to reach San Diego so its uncertain whether this issue wil cause problems for the Ruby when top speeds are required for her to make port." seacruise9 Posted March 14, 2018 #12 Share Posted March 14, 2018 Hi, I hope that the propulsion problems of the Caribbean Princess are not spreading to other members of the fleet. :( Chuck
Rare LawDog61 Posted March 15, 2018 Author #13 Share Posted March 15, 2018 We arrived in San Diego this morning on time. A truck (Subsea Global) is unloading gear on the dock at the aft of the ship. I see a wet suit so it looks like they are going to send a diver down to tale a look.

chengkp75 Posted March 15, 2018 #15 Share Posted March 15, 2018 Since the Ruby does not have azipods, my guess is that while "testing gear" prior to departure (the bridge and engine rooms test the steering controls, and the engine telegraphs, and the propeller pitch controls to make sure they are working correctly) every time, something in the pitch did not work right. After testing a few times, it cleared up, and the ship was underway. The divers are most likely going to see if there is some fishing gear wrapped around a propeller blade, or similar that may have temporarily caused the pitch control to not work. yyjguy Posted March 15, 2018 #17 Share Posted March 15, 2018 The Grand class vessels have fixed pitch propellers like the rest of the Princess fleet.

dobiemom Posted March 16, 2018 #19 Share Posted March 16, 2018 Since the Ruby does not have azipods, <snip> Will she be getting azipods during her upcoming drydock, or is this something that has to be done during the build? (Sorry if this is a stoopid question.)

TheRabbit Posted March 18, 2018 #23 Share Posted March 18, 2018 Will she be getting azipods during her upcoming drydock, or is this something that has to be done during the build? (Sorry if this is a stoopid question.) Azipods require a different hull design. As such, this is not a simple dry-dock change out.
