LIVE from the Star Princess; RT SFO to Hawaii - Oct. 6th to 21st

A lazy, relaxing, non-eventful, non-stressful day. This, for me, is a perfect cruise.

Mike really, really needed to check out the 10 AM deck 7 Piazza sale. That lasted about 3 minutes. Then, he really really needed to have some hot chocolate. So down we went to the IC with our books and relaxed a bit with his HC and my coffee. And yes, he really really needed something to go along with the hot chocolate. I left him at 11:15 to check out the choir offerings and yes, same old songs. So back I went to the IC just in time to see him gobble the last piece of donut. Something possessed me to take a look at the lunch menu (which I hardly ever do) and lo and behold there was a Reuben. I love a Reuben, so yes, at 1:00 PM we lunched in the DR. So, now what do we do with the rest of the afternoon? Nothing. Nada. Once of us took a nap and the other read a book. And then, as happens every day, it was wine time. And folks, now you see what happens when there’s too much time on your hands. Your fingers become possessed and are able to write all kinds of babble about nothing. Anyway, hope some of you smile when you read it. :)

We are going to forego the cocktail party; don’t need more to drink. And of course if we don’t go to the party, that means we don’t dress for formal night. HC here we come.

Ship has been rocky all day, so I doubt we will be able to do the MUTS movie. But there’s one called The Double on stateroom TV, so might just see that. So many choices; so much time. What is for sure is that Destination Anywhere is not an option.

Maureen: we are now going to be two for two for no formal night, so can't answer your question.

Tracie: No. Didn't register. I am scent sensitive and all that floral stuff would not suit my lungs.

Bye for now. See you in the morning.

Anyhow, we drove out to Ka’anapali Beach which to a shopping center; Whalers Village. Lots of upscale stores as well as reasonable ones too. We had a yummy lunch at a restaurant right on the beach; Hula Grill. Sitting under palapas in the shade, drinking Diet Coke (come on, it’s midday;)) and feeling the ocean breeze. W

Is their a reasonable way to get to the beach without renting a car or taxi ??

thanks

I completely concur with your thoughts about a perfect cruise, and I definitely did smile when i read your post. It also reminded me of possessed fingers filling a blog about an entire winter of cruising. Lots of babble about nothing. A friend told me I blog exactly like I talk. I'm not sure it was a compliment. Not at all sure.

The last time we did the Hawaiian cruise, we took the bus from in back of the Cinema Wharf Mall, which goes up to that beach, but we got off at the Cannery Mall stop. It is a crowded bus. Next Hawaiian cruise, we may just go up to that beach and the Whalers Mall. I wonder if the museum there is worth checking out.

That worked great for Jerry Seinfeld! ;)

Click on this link to get the schedule for the $1 bus from the back of The Wharf Cinema Center across from the Banyan Tree adjacent to the tender pier. You can go either north to Ka'anapali Beach or south to Ma'alaea Bay where the aquarium is located & even to Ka'ahumanu Shopping Center in Kahului. Just allow enough time because it can probably get busy particularly with a lot of cruise ship passengers.

Pia, Thanks so much for your insights and reports. We are booked on Star Nov 20th. We may need to really limit luggage due to a medical procedure scheduled for Nov 9th, OY!! So I'm wondering how many men do not wear jackets in MDR on formal nights? DH has always brought a suit but maybe not this time.... Glad you and DH are enjoying! m--

Will try and save Pia some minutes and respond to this - the vast majority of the men in the MDR wear jackets, lots wear tuxes on formal nights. Not sure what the packing issues might be, but medically necessary equipment doesn't count towards your airline luggage limits. Medical stuff flies free.

What kind of choir is it? Thank You

Passengers who would like to sing together led by a staff member. Think "Sweet Caroline" and "We Are the Champions" and similar songs.

No great singing voice or experience needed.

There are several rehersals followed near the end of the cruise by a performance in the atrium.

Remember the first time we didn't do formal nite. Several years ago, sat in Vines with a flight of wine and watched everyone go by in their finery. It was freeing and you need to try it if you never have. Last winter on the Star we had 6 formal nites. The last one was St. Patrick's Day and 'the boys' wore green tee shirts under their sports coats (with ties of course!) Fun-fun-fun

Pia, I have really enjoyed your posting. Thanks for the input. Although we are mainly looking to just sit back and enjoy, this is our first cruise to Hawaii and I am looking for some options at each port of call for independent tours. Anyone got any ideas. Just want to say "been there, say that" :)

Rent a car on Kauai and drive yourself around Waimea Canyon stopping whenever you like. Very very easy and makes for a great tour when you're not having to keep to someone else's schedule.

Good morning on this partly cloudy, but warm Tuesday morning. So much to do today if you are so inclined. Also a $20 laundry bag special; one per passenger.

Morning offerings are as follows:

1. Future cruise presentation on Alaska

2. Zumba class - outdoors at the Neptune pool

3. 3 hour only sale; again. In Capri

4. Lecture - “Sharks; the Predators of the Deep”

5. Choir rehearsal

6. Ice carving at Neptune pool

7. Lei workshop, if you are registered

8. Lecture - “Supernova; what kind of stars do we see?”

9. Bingo

10. Pub Lunch

This afternoon in the theater, comedian Kevin Hughes is giving a lecture on How not to Lose your Mind, followed by the movie Men in Black 3. MUTS has the movie Back to the Future, the

Red Hat Society is meeting and of course another Bingo session.

It’s no smoking in the casino tonight, so perhaps the tables can get me. MUTS has The Hunger Games, Lovena Fox (I cannot seem to take a cruise without her being there) is the theater show du jour, and Arbitrage is the movie that will be shown in Vista. My choice is either the movie or the casino. Or both. Explorer’s will have early Karaoke, music and dancing and trivia.

Last night it was way too windy to see a MUTS movie, so we opted to see The Double on TV. Good cast. Richard Gere, Topher Grace and Martin Sheen. One thing wrong, though. That’s not the movie that came on in the designated time slot and channel. Midnight in Paris showed up and though we’d seen it previously, we watched it again. I looked through the TV guide and Midnight is due to be shown the night of the 20th. Somebody goofed.

Just before we left the cabin this morning, Martyn announced today’s winner. It’s me! I win a goodie bag, though I don’t know what’s in it. Will let you know when I find out.

Thank you Tina, Donna and Bill for answering questions. And to anyone else I didn't mention. Time for breakfast.

Ciao. Oops, wrong cruise. :D

Pia,

Hope your goody bag is full of wine! You and Mike are on a hot streak. You're missed here, really gets SO quiet when your gone.

We fly to NY on Friday and will be meeting Gloria & Lew at the hotel and heading out to dinner and some wine shopping and Vodka or Jack Daniels for John.

You'd be ROTFLYAO if you saw how many clothes I've packed for 21 days, but it puts a smile on my face.

Pia: Thx so much for taking the time to post. My BF/DH and extended family are on the same ship. BF/DH are cruise virgins!! Your posting will help me ask BF some important questions. Especially helpful is the wave action as BF"s DH was very concerned about getting seasick. Has that patch behind the ear thing.

The DH is a computer nerd but only posts when in port. Glad noro hasn't showed up. Thanks for UR time and efforts.

I was only on the sea once before I took my first cruise. It was only for 4 hours but, for those 4 hours, I would gladly have had someone shoot me. I was beyond sick and wanted to die.

I got the patch for my first cruise and we hit really rough weather the first night out of port and all the next day. People were staggering around the ship. The patch WORKED. It was a 10 day cruise and I never felt the slightest discomfort.

We're departing SFO no the 5th for Hawaii. 15 day trip. I have my patches and am confident I will not have an issue with motion sickness.

I never leave home without my patches, dramine, sea sick wrist bands (don't know if they really work) and Gin Gins (hard ginger candy and it works for when the swells are a little more than gentle).

Someone earlier in this post mentioned the Sea Princess and the Pax stranded ashore in Akaroa. We have a friend who's on board here's part of his email:

"Well we are on our last day at sea, we are rocking and rolling through the Tasmanian Sea, a storm front came through and we had to spend a extra night in Akaroa with 700 passengers stuck on the island, they finally got aboard the next day. At that point the Captain made a announcement that we would have to bypass the last two stops and head straight for Sydney, we the Tasmanian Sea is no picnic, we have been fine but some people are not doing well. We have 12 foot swells and 40mph winds."

I used the patch on my first cruise and it made me feel groggy, so I cut it half.

I know some posters say not to do it...but for me it worked, I didn't get sea sick, and felt "normal" :D

( Altoids has a ginger mint in a tin)

Thank you for all the Star post!!! Great info , loved feeling as though I'm on the cruise

Does anyone know that since my cruise is sold out both inside and outside and we have a guarantee inside cabin but have not received a cabin assignment yet, does this mean that we might get a balcony upgrade???

you might get the category you booked or something higher, you will have to wait and you may not even find out until you check in
