What would be a 'fair' price for a single? Should that be the per person price quoted based upon double occupancy? Should a solo get the same cabin for half the price of a couple booking the same room? Would it be fairer if the cruise lines didn't publish per person prices but only quoted a price for a cabin, ie, twice the current published per person rate?

I am a solo traveler and I am forced to pay the price. I often opt out of many cruises I would like to do because of the price.

What would would be fair would be to charge for the cabin as double occupancy (as hotels do), but reduce the total fare for food/beverage. (1 person does not typically eat/drink the same as 2) In addition Solo travelers should not be disqualified for promotions, but should only be entitled to 1 persons worth. I do not book with Princess directly, so I am never able to book their promotions, I do not even bother looking.

Azamara often offers a single rate of 125% and this weeks Celebrity "Exciting Deals" has 6 of the 9 cruises offered at 150%

Good to know! thanks for the info.

I found a website (travel agency so cannot mention the name here) that has a link to all of their cruises that don't include a single supplement or if so, they list the discounted price for that cabin as well ... one stop shopping!!

I have a friend that I would like to cruise with but she snores so badly that I know I would get no sleep. Going to keep my eyes open on this site for some deals.

Currently, not places we want to go and many specials listed for pricey cruiselines ... but Norwegian does have quite a few specials listed that have no single supplement. :)

One of my big grumps is that a solo pays $1000 more than the double rate on this cruise for special discount only given to 2 in a room they pay $1000 less. Now is that fair ROcketman?

Sad fact of life is that marketing is not fair. Princess wants to sell cruises, so they do these promotions. It's just about the money, and fairness isn't part of the equation. :(

I think it would be great if they eliminate the single supplement. If they do, instead of my wife and I getting a balcony, one could get a balcony and the other could get an inside. That would save us some money and give us some extra storage space.

I like the idea of the smaller cabins that some cruise lines are making for solo travelers. A few of those on each ship would be great. Obviously, there is a demand for them or they wouldn't be marketing them. As to sharing space, it is difficult enough to do with a relative let alone a friend or travel mate.

For your input.I am pleased I am not alone on this subject which bugs me to death. Why is Princess one of the only lines that does not give solos a break.

Think they really would like to say' No Solos' They cannot because of discriminatory action.

Solos should pay more, perhaps, they don't spend double, on booze, shops, casino etc, so actually cost the line money.

I don't buy this argument especially if a cruise isn't fully booked. I would think they would rather have one person in a cabin, than an empty cabin. I shop, buy drinks, go in the casino, so I stay home because they double the price. If there are empty cabins, just seems dumb to me. One passenger is better than none.

Why not try NCL newer ships. They have solo cabins and you might be surprised at how nice these ship are. Just a suggestion.

Then it has to be better to book for 2 and have one No Show

Not really sure how you would work the passport information that needs to be entered before you cruise. Do you know someone willing to give you that information?

That's not true. I would actually spend more if I went as a single than I do when I go as a couple ... and I cannot be alone on that. I would find things to go do on my own, those things cost money for me and make money for the cruise line. If I went alone, I would go to the spa and book additional excursions, play bingo or go to the casino.

If with my mate, I might hang out in my cabin and watch a movie and then order room service, sit out by the pool or go dancing.

The original post wasn't only complaining about paying double for the single supplement but also not getting the discount that a couple might get, so may end up paying 250% vs 200%. Not fair at all.

I saw pricing on a site where pricing is $1400 pp but $4400 for a single. That is just not right!!

I just had a peek at their website and find it a most welcoming one for solos.

A luxury line with all tips and drinks included which is making me begin to think.:)

And it's not just the really great cabins and really great service, Silversea treat solos as valued guests, not just some flotsam or jetsam that they must tolerate just to fill their cabins or comply with some law. There are solo get togethers to which solos actually come, and solos are invited to dine with officers some nights (if they wish, nothing is obligatory), and on some sailings there are 'gentleman hosts' (yeah, dated and sexist, I know, but some people like them if they want to dance). My biggest problem sailing Silversea is trying to resist the champagne till at least noon, but I usually fail and have a champagne cocktail around the pool about 11.30am ... or earlier ... sigh ...

I couldn't agree more. If I were in charge, I would have solos pay a slightly discounted cabin rate and get half the promos like hpeabody suggested.

I am just starting to look into solo cruising. Right now my cabin mate is my 90 year old mom. I suspect this year may be her last so I started looking. Can't say I am happy with what I found so far. As a retired manager I do understand all about the bottom line but I don't have to like it. I guess I'm not clear what the op is saying about not getting the lower price that a double would get.

So say I book a cabin solo for 1700.00 that would be 800.00 pp if i booked double. Next month it is discounted by 200.00 and I cannot as a solo reap any of that savings? What about specials that offer free specialty dinner or whatever, can a solo get that? What if you have a casino discount can solo use that?

As I said I am just trying to understand how being solo works because I know my time is coming. I really am not interested in sharing a cabin unless a close family member. :)

They say it is better to 'let it out' than fume to oneself.:D

No I doubt they will ever change. This due to the fact that solo is in the minority on cruise ships so they don't really need our do-Ray -Me.:)

Sometimes you just need to vent. That's ok. :):):)

For you solos out there, if you are thinking of booking a cabin for two with the intention of sailing as one... this is how it worked for us on the Coral in December...

We had two mini-suites. One for me and my husband, and one for my mom and son. My mom died. We had paid in full for the four of us, and were not looking to recoup money. We just wanted two mini-suites. One for my husband and me, and one for our son.

At the sage advice from some CC rock stars (thanks Keith, Pam, and Jeff), we said nothing to Princess until our son checked in at the pier. It was then I notified the check in people that my mom would not be sailing. I said nothing else, offered no other explanation, nothing. Just a simple, "Mrs. D. A. will not be sailing on this cruise".

We proceeded to board. We let our cabin steward know that my mom would not be sailing. And that was it... until 2 days later.

My mom was summoned to the Passenger Service Desk to update her credit card on file- as it had been declined (duh. I closed those accounts). I let them know she was not on the ship and would not sail. The PSD closed all accounts for her. There were not additional charges made to my son's account (for the single suppliment). My mom also did not accrue any gratutities. She did not receive OBC, either. And that truly was the end of it.

So, if you get a better deal sailing with a "friend", go for it. Then, oopsie, they miss the boat... You have more than paid for the cabin- but at a fair premium.

All ships have a limited amount of HA cabins. Once they are filled up, there is a cut-off. Unfortunately, those who require a HA cabin need to either book earlier or find another cruise.

Why doesn't Princess set aside a similar amount of cabins for singles and once they are filled, no further single bookings. I realize there could be a problem with TAs attempting to buy cabins for potential clients but perhaps, only in this situation, all reservations have to be made through Princess. At least there is an option.
