Room Service!

I was quite disappointed to read John Healds post today about this. I will most miss the debarkation morning room service breakfast. It has been a ritual with us as we prepare to debark. I also wish that Carnival would give us more options for late night no fee food if they're going to restrict room service. Unlike at home, where I can either go to my refrigerator and grab a snack, or run out if I want to, we're a captive audience on the ship. The all night pizza place generally has a ridiculously long line, which will probably get worse with this change. Carnival is clearly not a luxury cruise line. I recognize that. Still, it's just disappointing.

Well this is a big bummer. We are going on our second cruise, without kids this time for our 20th anniversary and I wanted to go all out and do things we didn't do last time since it's just the two of us. Room service is one thing we didn't do last time around and since I am a night owl and like to eat late at night, I figured we could take advantage of it this time around. I guess we will be paying if we want to.

Again, I ask "how much food is wasted between 4am-6am"? Their policy in the morning doesn't make any sense.

Bingo! This isn't about food waste at all. It's about adding yet another fee for something that has been included in cruise fare in the past. This is the way of the future. Vote with your cruise booking dollars going forward. :)

How’d I guess this thread would be mostly Kool-aid drinkers who just don’t care about all of the cutbacks in service, increase in fees, additional passengers, less crew. What will it take? Yes, after over 20 years of nearly exclusive Carnival — they are killing their business. Bring back the old Fun Ship days... nothing booked, nothing planned. First time in ages.

What a bunch of self-indulgent nonsense! I couldn't care less about Carnival. Heck my next cruise on Holland America. And the one after that is probably going to be on Royal Caribbean. How about you just accept what people are saying at face value instead of allowing your petty frustration and anger to distort what your understanding of what you are reading?

Carnival is a business. And I bet they know more about what Will bolster and what will hurt their business than you do. As a matter of fact our best information about what's best for Carnival comes from reverse engineering their actions to determine what insights about our behaviors as consumers that they've gained from the vast amounts of data and research they do.

Things change. Just because you find something disappointing doesn't mean that the people doing that something or doing something wrong. They simply have different priorities and objectives from you. And in the context of a cruise line that will always be the case. Passengers will always want to pay less and get more and cruise lines will always want to charge more and incur less cost. This isn't something evil. It is simply the normal state of a competitive marketplace.

They are quickly becoming the "Spirit Airlines of the Seas".

And I am one who happens to know the restrictions on Spirit and will be fully aware of Carnival’s new policy.

When one can Fly R/T to Fla. From up North for 50.00 R/T for 2, give me that anytime. Granted there were mileage points!

It’s all about knowing policies/restrictions.

I always go up to Lido and get my husbands and I coffee every morning 1st thing then bring it back to the room. Then we go to breakfast in Lido a little later

We have never used room service , they take to long for me.

Are there really so many of you that didn't see this coming? I'm not crazy about it, but after seeing various changes on other lines I figured Carnival would be making changes of their own and figured this would be an obvious one. As nice as it would be to keep things the same, change is inevitable. Carnival's a business and will do what they need to do to stay profitable. I doubt this was done on a whim.

Amazing the belly aching about a $1 or $2 tip to room servers from some of the same people that have no issue purchasing a several hundred dollar drink package (and many do it cuz they can try everything then WASTE it if they dont like it cuz they already spent money on it). If your budget is that tight or you cannot see the logic in all that wasted food left on trays all night then perhaps your budget cannot afford a cruise.

Many of you sound entitled and ridicules and if this is going to bother you then dont use it, great about cruises or any other vacation, it is a choice, turn the channel!!!

All that food on trays you see every morning sitting there (from the during the night orders) waiting to be picked up is wasted food, period!!!

Ok, really, you are being kind of rude. I have saved and paid on my upcoming cruise for over two years. I budgeted everything as we are not rich. I make monthly payments for the cruise I just paid off and even prepaid for the excursions and tips, and yes even have envelopes with $1 bills in it for the kids and fiancee to order room service. Yes, I'll be in the casino... also all budgeted and money envelopes. Kids drink packages paid for, plane and hotel before and after paid for. There is 8 in my family... and so yes... us all ordering room service and at the least $2 per item on the menu... will add up. Now maybe next vacation I will chose something else... but like I said.... rude for you to say to me now... as I am already locked into this cruise.

If people are on an extremely strict budget, just order for free before 10PM and after 6AM. At least they don't charge for room service 24/7 like I have heard other lines do. Tell the kids that 9:45PM is the cutoff for the free stuff. Otherwise they can go get pizza or the deli.

I thought the same thing actually... but wonder if they are going to add on the 18% too? I mean the $2 per item? My fiancee gets cereal and milk for his midnight snack... that could get costly for something we thought was going to be free when we booked.

Why not grab cereal and milk and spoons and bowls from the Lido buffet in the morning? No cost, no tip, no problem.

To anyone who really believes that charging for late night room service due to food waste is the real reason for this' date=' I know of a very nice bridge, hardly ever used, over the Hudson River that is for sale at a very reasonable price.[/quote']

This has nothing to do with food waste and everything to do with discouraging room service, what with their newly reduced staff and the logistical nightmares that are popping up because of it. It's a cutback gone too far for them to handle.

Agree, except for your concluding sentence. They are handling it with yet another cutback.

I have never used room service. Why eat in the room when there are restaurants an elevator ride away. There is nothing better than being the sole passenger on the deck at 4am looking at distant coastal lights, stars, or occasional passing ship. The usual light breeze, warm Caribbean air, while drinking lemonade and eating a whole pizza prepared just for you.

I think this can save several tens of thousands per week per ship which will go directly to the bottom line. JH saying this is because of food waste is PR speak blaming pax for what is a cynical move to take a benefit that will affect few pax. I personally have never tried room service. My observation of the operation in 4 and 5 star resorts where I work motivates me to go to the coffee shop or other 24 hour venue if snackitis hits after meal time.

That said, I have booked three future cruises with Carnival, and included was 24 hour complementary room service. How will Carnival roll out this new policy to avoid FTC problems for persons already booked? Will only pax booked after a certain date be charged for room service during the late hours? How would the menu indicate which was included and for whom?

I would like to see something new being included. Comped soft drinks in MDR, or warm mixed nuts with a cocktail?

Takes forever to get pizza late at night these days. Once they charge for room service line will get even longer.

Also the only time we usually get room service is debarkation morning where we get a quick breakfast and head off the ship.

The cutbacks never stop

Room service on disembarkation day is to be discontinued.......

They will probably just update the policy as of next week with no exceptions. Like when they changed to no smoking on the balconies. It was an across the board implementation with no bearing upon when one booked. Or when they took away the Gold party. Up until it went into effect or they changed the terms it was listed as a perk under the VIFP program. Then it wasn't. If you booked when it was still listed it didn't matter. They didn't grandfather anyone in.

Did the other cruise lines that decided to charge for room service at any time of the day or night when it was originally free make exceptions based on booking date?

Well they made us (yes made us) bring rum runners, now we have to bring food runners. Geez Carnival. Your doing this so there will be less need for these employees and you can cut more employees saying "no need for this many employees" with no one getting room service. I see what you did there Carnival.

Actually I just paid my cruise off last night and I'm not really happy to learn of yet more cutbacks. The Carnival site still lists 24 hour complimentary room service, so it appears they are not so quick to notify new bookings of the changes. In fact they are falsely advertising what is included in your cruise rate. Isn't it funny how they can change the terms of your contract but you can't?

I will cruise on Carnival for my already paid for cruise but my future booking with other cruise lines. Carnival may have once been a value for your money but this budget cruise line continues to lower it's standards!

For all of those crying about the changes in room service, here's something to think about. What is the cost for the next cruise you have booked (or are planning to book) on Carnival? What would that same (or similar) cruise cost on _______ Cruise Line? Someone on here whined about Carnival "nickel and diming" them for certain things. Which is better, to have all passengers pay more up front to ______ Cruise Line and have certain things included, such as free items on the room service menu 24/7 (even though there may be several people that don't use room service), or, pay a lower cost for a cruise on Carnival and make most room service menu items FREE from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., with a nominal charge after 10:00 p.m. for those that haven't yet stuffed their faces with enough food from sunrise to sunset? I guarantee that I could fill up our little fridge in the cabin and all available shelves in the cabin in about an hour, making a few trips back and forth to the buffet, with enough food to last at least three days. No extra charge to me, and no tipping required.
