Is it OK to take pics of food whilst dining?

I don't see why anyone beyond your table would care. People at your table need to not feel pressured to agree though. If it is "You go ahead and eat; I'm going to snap a few photos," that's fine. If it is "Do you mind if I photograph your food?" there is a certain amount of pressure to say "yes," no matter how I really feel.

 

No, I'm not a shrinking violet, and am often criticized in the business world for being too firm...but I try to take a "get along" attitude on the cruise. Perhaps the solution for me is to ask for a change of table if someone wants to photograph my food. And yes, I've been at a table where an individual not related to me wanted to photograph every plate brought to the table.

I don't ask to take pics of anyone else's food, I just let the table know that I will take a quick one of each course I have for my vlog. I adopt a "get along" cruising attitude too but luckily haven't encountered anyone wanting to photograph every plate. As someone else said, people do often volunteer photos of their dishes once they see me doing it. I take one pic and put my phone away so it doesn't interrupt the meal. Asking for a different table might be uncomfortable but it would hopefully get the person to wonder why and maybe learn not do that in the future.

Tacky and rude - that's garbage. See it happen quite often. What's the big deal? We have done it a few times and have turned our pictures into canvas prints and have hung a few in our kitchen at home.

There are many cruisers who wish to take photos of the their own food plates in order to post photos on their blogs, Facebook, Twitter, etc., or here at CC. I have no problem with that, as long as they don't expect the rest of the table to wait for them instead of starting to eat.

 

 

I think it gets tricky when one person wants to photograph every plate of every other passenger at the table and wants all the plates passed around, wants to check the camera results for every photo, or wants everyone to wait at the beginning of each course that is served.

 

Every cruise has passengers that are very avid photographers, while other passengers are less interested in taking photos. On our last cruise, there was a family who loved the painting that hung on the wall immediately opposite the mid-ship elevators, and one of the family members constantly was trying to take photos of that painting during times when the elevators were very busy. So, the elevator doors would open for that deck, pax would start to leave the elevator, and the family member would say, " Please wait, I am just trying to get this photo of my relatives with this painting, just a sec, just a sec, just let me get this photo" etc. etc., and that was kind of an inconvenience, as he kept trying to get the same photo over several days. Normally, I'm very happy to stop and allow passengers to take photos, as I know they are trying to create happy memories, but some photographers get so caught up in taking pictures of food, or shipboard decorations, paintings, etc. that they tend to make others wait excessively.

 

When I take photos, I try to be empathetic to others who are stopped and waiting for me to get the shot of my family, dishes of food, shipboard decor, and so forth. JMO -- EBC

I've never taken a photo of food and would be as polite as possible when refusing a request to photograph my meal. We avoid that situation by getting 2 tops unless traveling with family. They know better than to ask me although once I was making a pasta for my husband's extended family and when we sat down to eat a cousin announced "you already have 35 likes for your pasta!" He had taken pictures just a few minutes before of the finished dish. We are not on Facebook but I knew I was supposed to express something (thanks? wonder? don't these people have a life? etc.) so I just murmured 'that's nice.'

Sometimes my dinner is too pretty not to take s quick picture with my phone. The last time I did it, and posted it on Facebook, my college student Granddaughter called her mom and told her to look at my post.

I had a lovely photo of my dinner and the comment

“I just love good porn”!

My question and I know that you do not know the answer to it is why did the other passengers wait while this person was trying to take their photos. I wouldn't. They are just holding everyone up.

 

Another point and this is not directed at your post but to another post and I don't want to post twice. One respondent said that they always asked the other people at their table if it was OK to take food pictures. How many people at the table would say that it was not OK even if they felt that it was annoying. Most people are too polite to say "no".

Meh. If you’re able to get even 10,000 followers on IG, you can start getting ad revenue and endorsements on your photos. At the least, you get invites to food festivals and events. I say, snap away.

I don't see a problem with pictures of your food. Asking to take pictures of other people's food might be questionable.

We have cruised alot and nobody has ever been offended. Some amused people but never a problem. Love to look at the food after the fact. Be sure to get some macro shots. A close up of a berry, droplet on a glass. So much fun. Enjoy!!

I only take photos of mine and DH's food. But I take photo's and share with people who enjoy the food pics

We always do! When we have travelled as a family, we pass the camera around the table to make sure we get photos of everything. My food photos have been very appreciated by many!
