Nevada Jen Posted September 18, 2018 #1 Share Posted September 18, 2018 got off an 8 day cruise with 6 sea days on Sunday about noon. I'm still feeling like I'm rocking back and forth. How long does this last? I actually didn't notice it Sunday but I'm kinda maxed out with it right now.
joepeka Posted September 18, 2018 #2 Share Posted September 18, 2018 For most people, including me back when I had the issue, it's usually gone in about a week or 10 days. Some folks report it lasting longer some never experience it at all (that's my situation in recent years, not sure why I stopped having it). FYI, the technical term is mal de barquement and you can Google it for more info. :)
nchikk Posted September 18, 2018 #3 Share Posted September 18, 2018 For me it's usually a couple of days, maybe three. Just off an 8-day myself, and it was about that.

A&Jfamily Posted September 18, 2018 #5 Share Posted September 18, 2018 I have had it come and go over 10 days or so at its worst... Sent from my iPhone using Forums
bury me at sea Posted September 18, 2018 #6 Share Posted September 18, 2018 For me it lessened in both intensity and length after each cruise. I don't feel it at all anymore, and kind of miss it. Though I feel the motion on the ship it has never bothered me.
Daphne'sMom Posted September 19, 2018 #7 Share Posted September 19, 2018 Usually 3-4 days for me. Most noticeable when seated or standing in one place. I kind of enjoy my little cruise souvenir while it lasts. Might change my mind if it became as bothersome as some experience.

Time between cruises can make a big difference too.
cherylandtk Posted September 19, 2018 #10 Share Posted September 19, 2018 Can’t say if this works, but rumor has it that the syndrome is an inner ear-eye imbalance that can be ‘reset’ by using a swing or a rocking chair for about 15 minutes a day for a few days. Might be worth a visit to a local park or playground to find out.

Though I feel the motion on the ship it has never bothered me. Ditto for me. I used to enjoy our stay at a motel after so I could pretend I was in one of the long passageways and feel the sway. ;)

Gallivanting Souls Posted September 19, 2018 #13 Share Posted September 19, 2018 My husband has had it last up to a week. He now just takes the meclizine an extra couple of days. No more swaying at the dock.

lasvegascruising Posted September 19, 2018 #15 Share Posted September 19, 2018 Nevada Jen....Could this be a Nevada thing? I'm from Vegas and have had this "swaying" effect for the last few cruises too. I get to work on Monday morning and sitting at my desk I am just "swaying" in my office chair. It is rather annoying. It does take days for this to wear off. I thought it was just me but now I am clear that us desert rats just take longer to get over it. I will say one thing, I am NOT going to stop cruising! Gamecock_Cruiser Posted September 19, 2018 #16 Share Posted September 19, 2018 That is the WORSE part of the cruise for me. Typically 5-7 days. I continue taking my motion sickness medication about a 7-10 days after the cruise for this reason.
Scurvy Seadog Posted September 19, 2018 #17 Share Posted September 19, 2018 I've never experienced this problem. Of course I did earn my sea legs in the Navy. :)
dmdiver Posted September 19, 2018 #18 Share Posted September 19, 2018 I've had it last for up to a week. I agree it is annoying. The more I move around, the less I notice it. So, I guess I just have to stop being lazy after I get back from my cruise. I think last time I continued my twice daily ginger capsules, but I can't remember if it made any difference. Must be the mad cow.
ricew001 Posted September 19, 2018 #19 Share Posted September 19, 2018 I live in NC so not exclusive to Nevada since I've had it too. Goes away generally in a few days but it is weird.
asalligo Posted September 19, 2018 #20 Share Posted September 19, 2018 Only a couple of days for me and I miss it when it leaves.

How long does this last? I actually didn't notice it Sunday but I'm kinda maxed out with it right now. Its about a week for me. I once read that if you are susceptible to it, it will get worse with each cruise, but that has not been the case for me.
BeckyMax Posted September 19, 2018 #22 Share Posted September 19, 2018 That is the WORSE part of the cruise for me. I totally agree with this statement. After each cruise I say I am not going to go again because I can't deal with the sickness afterward. Of course, it's like pregnancy, you forget it and go another round. This will be cruise number 8 for us. Incidentally, several years ago I was diagnosed with a tumor on the cranial nerve the controls balance, this probably makes it worse for me. VolzCruiser Posted September 19, 2018 #23 Share Posted September 19, 2018 I used to get them with every cruise but now I don't unless it is a cruise where the ship is really rocking. A few years ago we cruised and the ship stayed just on the out skirts of a hurricane and that ship rocked all the time except in port. I think I most of had the rocking at home going on 15 days. The worst was when in the shower and I closed my eyes to wash my hair.
abby1257 Posted September 19, 2018 #24 Share Posted September 19, 2018 Mine lasted 3 weeks....I couldn't even drive for over a week! I almost ended up in emergency....nothing helped...just had to wait for it to go away....When I would shower...it was like being on the ship....so unbalanced ...ugh
Bookworm1985 Posted September 19, 2018 #25 Share Posted September 19, 2018 I just take my Bonnie and ginger pills for several days after I get off the ship and never get it (after my first cruise that is where i learned to keep up with the meds) Sent from my iPhone using Forums
