Thanks!  I did not read that, you saved me from being one of “those” people.

I’m a rule follower so you won’t find me arguing to make an exception for “my perfect angel”.

Collage is excellent for some no doubt in my mind. Just when I graduated 1999. We were basically told high school grad made 20k tech school made 30k collage made 50k. Also how much better off we would be having that kind of position.

Please forgive me for the correction but my OCD is kicking in.   "College".

I have no problem with a kid walking up to the bar, ordering a soda or Shirley Temple, waiting until it is brought out, and then leaving the bar.  I don't think that's unreasonable.  I'm thinking of the Haven setup on the Bliss, where there really aren't any waiters that I recall, and the bar is very convenient--and the child might have to wait their turn to order while waiting in line.  Mom & Dad don't have to be right there for an older kid and I doubt there's any risk of the bartenders serving booze to a minor.  Hanging out at the bar, that's another story, but just ordering a soda isn't unreasonable.

Re college education vs not - everyone has different talents and aptitudes.  You couldn't pay me enough to be a lineman!  My talent is book learning, another stepson's is mechanical ability, and the lineman one's is hard work and being a lineman.  I think the keys are HARD WORK (mental work is also hard work, trust me!!) and having a marketable skill, and being good at whatever that skill is.  No, it is not essential to have a college or graduate degree to make good money, but it depends on the individual, what they are capable of doing and being willing to do.

I'm the same way...except that my kids order a daiquiri or margarita. 🍸

I'm never more than a few feet away but they like to order their own drink.

The sitting/hanging out isn't something that they would want to do nor would I allow it. Even if NCL allows it (does anyone know the official NCL policy?), I wouldn't let them. My kids prefer the soft chairs, anyway.

I have no idea how we got on this topic, though, because regardless of how much money you make or how you got your Haven room, if you’re getting in drunken fistfights you need to reassess your life choices

I'm surprised that the obvious "bait" post that insinuated that "...bid-Haven guests are more likely to cause trouble than book-Haven guests.." got so many replies.

Horrible experience , but totally agree, children sitting at a bar should not be allowed!!!  My pet peeve also!

No child should be at the bar.  Obviously, poor judgement.  Hopefully, NCL will ban children from sitting at a bar in the future.  It will be in the best interests of safety of their passengers.  Too bad that it forces NCL to take action to assure the safety of their passengers.

There are places on a ship where children should not be allowed and that is sitting at a bar.  I don't have a problem with kids sitting at a table with their parents.  It sounds to me that the parents were more than a wee bit drunk: the mother calling a drunk person fat and the father losing his cool and getting involved in a fight.  My experiences with drunks is to de-escalate the situation not to add fuel to the fire.  I feel sorry for that kid.  Having to spend time with two drunk parents whose late-to-the-party attempts to protect their child ended up in a brawl.  Quite a 'how I spent my vacation' moment having it culminate in your dad's perp walk off the ship.

When I took my grand daughter on a cruise I would have liked to have gone into a lounge but I didn't because I had my grand daughter with me.  I would have liked to have maybe three margaritas on the pool deck but I didn't because I had my grand daughter with me.  She was my responsibility, not some anonymous bartender or some teetotaling parent whom I assumed would watch out for my kid.  If you want to relive your keg days on a ship, don't take your children.

Update.

Docked in Miami this morning. 2 Miami Dade police officers escorted into Haven at 9 am. I’m guessing they’re at least being interviewed if not arrested.

There’s a vacation to remember. Remember that cruise when Dad got arrested??!!!

This had me burst out laughing...

Not b/c the topic is funny - but the quote...

"Remember that cruise when Dad got arrested?"

Hit me....

I just arrived home from this cruise and was in the Haven.  I didn't see the fight, but I did see some of the aftermath.  Saw the NCL security personnel speaking with the guy being referred to as the "drunk" guy on the sun deck.  He had cuts on his face and blood on his shirt.   From what I heard the parents played a major role in the fight.  It sounded like the third guy who tried to break it up may have gotten the worst of it.

I heard that the child was about 13.

All in all very, very disturbing.    I don't care who paid what to be where, haven or a bar anywhere on the ship - the whole episode was completely absurd.

I really feel bad for the kid.

One thing that situations like this can always be relied upon for is a whole thread of judgemental posts from people who have read half a story on the internet and form complete judgements on who is to blame, whilst also bringing completely unrelated things into their judgements.

Thanks everyone. Many of you have been very entertaining.

I think it's rather sad that this occurence has been the focal point of this cruise to this point anyway. I hope the children (and I mean others who may have been witness to this incident) won't just remember this one occurence.

It happens, how often, I don't know, never been witness on any of my cruises... guess I'm just lucky.

Happy St. Patrick's Day.

If you’re an adult on a cruise ship, and you get in a drunken (or sober) fistfight with another passenger, yes, you’re to blame for not walking away or getting ship security involved. “But the other guy started it” generally doesn’t even fly on US soil. Everyone in the drunken brawl gets arrested. It takes two to tango.

If you deliberately quoted me then I can only assume you missed my point.

Any time I've seen a child sit at a bar on an NCL ship, the bartender always tells them they are not allowed to sit there. Sure, they can walk up to order drinks, but not sit at the bar. Sounds like the Haven bartender dropped the ball on this one.

I would like to know what the drunk said the kid ?....was it a girl ?....did he say something inappropriate  that got Mom fired up ?....did Dad step in to defend both Wife and Daughter ?. If it were my daughter, and the comment was inappropriate, you can bet my Wife would step up.....and I always have her back, regardless.

It think whether the drunk guy said something inappropriate or just was drunkenly talking to the child, the thing to do is remove your child from the situation. If it was inappropriate, report the guy. AFTER you remove yourself and the child. Calling him a fat drunk only escalates the situation and really (in my opinion) is not being a great role model for your child as to how to deal with situations like this, or how to talk to people.

Going straight to violence is obviously a point of pride for some people. 😕

Totally agree!

Protecting your child should be a parents #1 responsibility. Get your kid out of there and report inappropriate behavior.

I agree with those on here that there is nothing wrong with a kid going up to the bar to get a drink. My daughter (who's about to turn 19) has been on many cruises over the years and has gone over to a bar many times to get a soda for herself or her mother. She's come up to the bars too when I've been hanging out and stood behind me or beside me to talk a little. Pretty harmless stuff.

I've never witnessed a fist fight on a cruise, but I know they happen more than they should.

Worst  I saw was on the Escape a few years ago, 7 day trip out of Miami. Their was a wedding party of 40-50 people fighting before they even got on the ship. After boarding, (I'm surprised they let them on) their was another fight around the pool deck. Needless to say NCL had enough and booted off the entire group. We were a little late leaving because police had to be called to get the people off the ship

There was a wedding on a cruise where the bride and best man shacked up and got caught. Friends of ours had a cabin directly next to them and figured it out when the arguing went out on the balcony.
