What if we do not want Medallion Class on PCL ?

Was it you who posted that friends got heavy fines for not quarantining because they were tracked with their EZ pass?

Technically so does a cruise card. However there are those who only eat and drink what’s included in the fare so they will be able to go undetected.

Yes. But they were fined because of airlines tracking and reporting to NY state. My son did a road trip to the Carolina’s and they tracked him through EZ pass. They called the house with Covid questions when he returned. They told him he had to quarantine and they followed up. If you don’t have EZ pass they track you by license plate since they will be mailing you or whoever the car is registered to a bill. There no longer are cash lanes to cross a bridge or on state highways.

Yes I agree there is not way to go 100% contactless;  I was referring to op not wanting to get a medallion pin; and that option and a cruise card will get you tracked while onboard ship.  This is the 21st Century and it is a way of life.

I don't think a legacy cruise card with RFID can be tracked whereas the medallion is designed to be tracked.

I'm new to Princess - my first cruise with them is booked for March 2022. I've been curious about Medallion Class since I first heard about it. So I watched some videos on the Princess site about it. One thing that I picked up is that you can use it in the shops for purchases and in the casino for wagering. That kinda scares me. If someone were to lose their medallion then the finder could go on a shopping and/or gambling spree and their spending would go directly to the owner's account.

If you lose your medallion you go to guest services and they will issue a new one which has a different chip.  No worries about someone charging things to your account

What is the difference between losing your cruise card or your medallion?  This is why you should keep frequently checking your onboard account.

In the shops, when you use the medallion, your picture appears on a screen for the cashier to see/compare. In the casino, if someone wanted to use your medallion on a slot machine, they would need to know your pin number. If you hadn't set up a pin yet, they would then need to know your date of birth.

In New York, the state has put EZ pass readers at certain points where no toll is deducted but the EZ pass is tracked.  They claim that's so that they can quickly determine if traffic is backed up.  That may be the case but they also keep the data on file.  The state also has Bluetooth readers on highways that track the Bluetooth's movements as well.  They say that's how the newer signs indicating travel times are computed.

I think you're asking this "tongue in cheek" but so others understand it, being in the safe should block the radio signal from being received by the receivers located around the ship.  So the system won't 'see' the medallion.

 

As an aside, when I was on the cruise in February, I used a small tablet to track the whereabouts of family using the app.  Most of the time, by the time I got to where the system said they were, they had moved on and I had to use one of the big screens to locate them since I didn't carry the tablet with me most of the time.  When it said they had gone to a shop or the Passenger Service Desk, they were gone again.  I wasted a lot of time believing it was giving me accurate information.  I gave up on it after a couple of days.

Yes, I should have added an emoji. I almost edited it to do that. But you did say SHOULD block the signal, so you really do not know for sure.

 

I see from your second paragraph that one of the benefits of the medallion that everyone seems to tout, being able to track one another, is in reality worthless.

When I sailed Caribbean Princess my wife tracked me down twice by using the large touch screens located around the ship.  I would be sitting in a lounge; and she would walk in and tell me how she tracked me down.  We loved the Ocean Medallion program

There are things called faraday cages or faraday bags that will block radio transmissions.  I bought two faraday pouches to hold my medallions so I could block being tracked if I wanted that option.  You could always pick up a faraday container and put the medallions in them before you put them into the safe if you would be that concerned.

Take the old beater phone out of the drawer, charge it, don't put a SIMM card in it, turn on WIFI, download app.

 

I may do this just because I don't like spurious apps on my active phone. After the cruise, I would reset the old beater phone and put it back in the drawer.
