Cashing a check onboard

A guest may cash one check per cruise as follows: One check up to $200.00 USD. Only checks written in US dollars which are drawn against a US bank can be accepted. Guests can no longer cash a personal check at the Casino cash desk; they can only do this at the Guest Relations or Guest Services Desk.

Not trying to be argumentative, but that information dates back to 2017. I believe check cashing was discontinued several years ago.

On the last Serenade cruise, there was a guest cashing a check at Guest Services.

I also saw a guest cashing a check not that long ago. But like everything else it may have changed.

I write checks at the grocery store. I fill them out in advance of shopping and just fill in the amount. $200.00 is correct onboard. I also have a couple of Traveler's checks left that I may cash. Last time the guest relations manager gathered everyone around to show how they were processed. LOL. Or maybe I'll just do them at the bank. 🙄☺️

I used to love having Traveler's checks and would cash them onboard.

Hello,

It's a long time since I used a cheque 'on premise', I do it at home to pay monthly/quarterly bills.

However stores I used to use had machines as part of the check-out/cash register that would complete/print the cheque for you and all you had to do was sign it. That certainly speeded things up. When next out shopping I will ask if they still exist.

And before someone starts a debate over 'check' vs 'cheque', read on:

'Drawn Notes', as they were originally called, were single sheets with a 'counterfoil' and no perforations between the two but a series of wavy lines instead. Once written, the drawer would tear the note from the counterfoil through the wavy lines. Once the note had been through 'the system' the drawer would CHECK that the drawn note was his by CHECKING that the wavy lines between the note and the counterfoil matched-up.

We owe the word 'cheque', and much else, to Dr. Johnson's Dictionary of 1755.

Regards,

Cublet

And they wait until everything is totaled up and then start getting out their check book 😬

and their paper coupons....

Which is why I do Sam's club with the app and self check out at grocery stores.  😁

If cashing a check for the ports, I usually set cash aside pre cruise.  I overthink it so I usually come home with cash.  GS can exchange bills for smaller bills which we have done for ports with local buses.

I am always behind that person in the grocery check out line

I do not use checks at stores, but have written several this year as we sold one house and purchased another and had work done on both.  A couple of the handymen/contractors we use don't take credit cards.  Also, I wonder what people do when they have major work done on a property but they don't have enough credit on a card?  Some businesses charge a fee if you use a credit card, so writing checks isn't really outdated.

I do pay a couple of bills via check, but most are autopay now.  We live in a 55+ community and pay our clubhouse restaurant/bar and HOA bills online, but most of the older crowd here pay via check.  They still accept checks dropped off at the clubhouse.  A few I've met have no idea how to do anything else.  We no longer have a mortgage.

For a vacation, we always bring cash from home to use for small purchases and extra tips.  DH and I divide it up between each wallet and one other location to carry.  I don't want to have to go get in line to cash a check onboard.

I think it was @Merion_Mom who stated it was no longer done. I have a short list of CC posters who are always right, and she heads the list. My memory, though, may not be as accurate.

Well, I just happen to be sitting in the Centrum on the Jewel right now, so I walked a few steps to Guest Services and asked the question.

The answer was YES, and he was surprised that I even had to ask, as in "of course."

I myself haven't done it in a very very very long time.  🙂

That is surprising, but good to know, thank you.  The last time I did it was back when the limit was $200, or $250 if you showed them an American Express credit card. That was many years ago.

City Hall here charges 3% to use a credit card for car tags and property tax.  For ships we carry cash for tips and casino.  Onboard charges go to credit card (although some folks do that as room charges to increase the credit card rebate).

Thought the companies that issued traveler's checks quit doing that 20 years ago.

I believe what changed was the American Express thing.

Thanks for confirming!  I didn’t think I was imagining things!  🤣

Definitely not imagining things. I only noticed because she was right next to me. It actually caught me off guard as I hadn't seen it before. She pulled out her check book and wrote it out.
