I feel like I'm going to get flamed, but I'll try anyway.  What is the RCI policy on pot products?  I sometimes enjoy a gummy to relax.  I don't really really seeing a lot of drug sniffing dogs working the crowd at boarding on past cruises.  Anyone have any experience with this?  If I throw a bag in my carry-on should I have any issues?

I think you know the answer to this.

Could you get away with it? Probably. Would you get kicked off the cruise if you got caught? Yes.

Thank you. I figured that was out there somewhere, but trying to find specific info on a cruise website can sometimes be a challenge!

I guess I was look for some real life answers.  I honestly have trouble thinking they're going to actually kick off a couple of unremarkable 50 year-olds for having a pack of gummies in their luggage.  Confiscating seems reasonable, but actually booting us off the ship for a first offense sounds a little draconian.  I get that they CAN do that, but I would like to hear if anyone can attest to that actually happening.

I mean, it's kind of like accidentally carrying a pocket knife through security at the airport.  It's totally reasonable to normally have that in my backpack and I forgot to take it out before going to the airport. What do they do? They confiscate it. The don't arrest me or put me on the no-fly list.

Just looking for real-life experiences.

So if something is prohibited, why do some folks think they are above the law and try to get away with doing it? If not caught, is it a proud moment?!

It is a federal crime. It is prohibited in the ports and some ports do send drug sniffing dogs onboard. Bahamas and Bermuda for sure. There have been news stories of passengers getting kicked off. No doubt most don’t get caught but if you are one of the ones caught I think there will be consequences. You might be banned from Royal Caribbean.

The issue isn’t the harmless 50 year olds. You are traveling outside the United States where the laws are much more conservative. Others have referenced getting kicked off and banned. However, the worst case scenario is getting thrown in jail in a foreign country. Is this probable?  No. Is getting banned probable?  That is a certainty if you are caught.

A certain percentage of the population thinks they are above the law. The criminal element exists among all demographics. Rich, poor and all age groups.

That's a bit of a draconian view.  Clearly, the laws and views on these products are rapidly changing and a widely varied depending on the locale.  I do not think I'm "above the law".  That's honestly why I asked.  If they're just going to take them away (a.k.a. the pocket knife at the airport), then I'm cool with it.  But seeing the honesty shocking action taken by Carnival, yeah, it's a hard pass for me.

"Criminal Element"?  That's rich!  So, just to be clear, you've never driven so much as 1 mph above the speed limit, correct?

Is it wrong and a not responsible thing to do? Yes.

Have I taken them on every cruise I've been on the last five years? Also yes.

Thank you.   But I'm still a little stunned about the story of Carnival banning someone for life!

As for the people talking about getting in trouble in ports, I totally get that. But no way would I ever consider venturing off the ship with them in a foreign country.  They would probably just be in my shaving kit in case I wanted one to relax at night.

But I guess that's just my "criminal" mind! LOL!

Yeah, the Carnival reaction pretty much seals the deal.  I would never consider taking them off the ship in another country.  But clearly, if that is the draconian approach the lines are currently taking, not worth it!

Some countries search the ship while in port. Bahamas and Bermuda for sure. I have actually seen it in Bermuda.

When I was cruising on Freedom out of Port Miami last Summer, my sister (who likes to board the ship later than I do) saw a passenger in handcuffs being escorted out of the terminal. The passenger was arrested because they found marijuana in his back pack. My sister said she didn’t know what the guy had exactly (flower, gummie, vape pen, etc.).

That's actually the way to go.

Because obviously if they don't, then people just ignore the rules and do what they want as they think they're above the rules.

Illegal and against the rules but you will be fine on the ship. I wouldn't take them off in port but no need to do that since you can eat just one before getting off the ship.

Do a search on if dogs can smell gummies. A few say it's possible but most say it's highly unlikely.

Here is a true story from about 8 years ago.  A young couple in their mid/late 20s were on a short RCL cruise to the Bahamas.  They were on a sea day and by the pool.  when they returned to their room, a security person was waiting outside their door.  Apparently, their cabin attendant found a joint somewhere in their cabin, and notified their superior.

The couple was placed on "house arrest" (a guard outside their cabin), and the next day when the shipped docked in Nassau, they were escorted off the ship and for some reason were turned over to the local authorities.  They had to appear before a magistrate who actually asked them how much cash they had on them.  When that amount was apparently insufficient, they were escorted to an ATM where they withdrew and paid $500.

The ship left them in Nassau and they had to contact the American embassy (or consulate) to arrange for their trip home (because they had only traveled with birth certificates and not passports.

I know this to be a true story as one of the couple is related to me.

All that being said, I doubt they'd find a couple of edibles, but the consequences can be severe enough to be a real deterrent.

No doubt that some get turned in by crew members not sniffer dogs. Or the sniffer dogs are brought on because they are tipped off by crew.

You'll likely be fine.

It's illegal at a federal level, can't take it over state lines, so although probably be fine why risk it? It's illegal in many countries. For instance, they bring on drug sniffing dogs in Bermuda, and it's an immediate $1000 fine.
