Leaving this weekend. How many one's should I pick up at the bank for tips before departure?

Depends on the length of your cruise and what excursions you are taking. I'll assume this is on top of the autotips? You'll need some for the baggage porters, bus drivers, tour guides, bartenders and anyone else who you feel needs a cash reward for good service.

If you start with $20 (or $50) in ones, and find your need more singles, you can always get them at guest services or the casino cashier.

We usually take 50-100. We tip shuttle drivers, bartenders (above cheers tip) and room stewards. We don't do MDR but back a few cruise ago when we did they passed out an envelope to tip extra on last night. All tips are above what we prepay in auto grats.

We take $75 to $100 in ones and about $30 in $5's...this usually covers porters, room service, bar service and in port (the islands love american dollars) for taxi, tour operators and food/bar service etc...we also always have several $20's set aside for things like tipping extra in the beginning and end of cruise for cabin steward or other people we feel it appropriate to tip extra.

It is a personal choice and you can figure it out by what you would normally tip for things on land and maybe make sure you have a few extra just in case.

Don't bring WADS of ones! Bring a few, and get larger bills broken down onboard. Wads of cash is a pain to carry...larger bills are MUCH easier! You can sign for tips on bar tabs....you'll only need cash for the cab and porters. Figure on about 15% for the cab, and $2 per bag for the porters. Everything else on the ship goes on your account.

Tips for room service are not covered under auto grats and since DH and I order breakfast and/or coffee and juice every morning I plan for $3 a day for that tip - week long cruise total around $21. I also plan for porters, DH's wheelchair pusher for boarding and disembarkation, and excursion guides and/or taxi drivers.

That being said we normally bring $50 in $1s ... $100 in $5s ... $100 in $10s....$100 in $20s. What we don't use on the cruise we can easily spend at home afterwards. Carrying $$$ for the trip is not a big deal - I have a travel wallet that I put the cash in and keep it in the cabin safe with my regular wallet during the cruise removing cash as needed.:)

We took $100 cash on our last 4-day and it ended up not being enough between luggage handlers, tour operators, room steward, taxi drivers, etc.

We used the ATM on the ship the last night to get cash for our room steward and it was EXPENSIVE! So plan ahead and bring more than you think you will need.

We wanted to tip all of these people and so we paid the ATM fee, but I wish we would have just brought more cash!

I take very little for tipping extra.

1. Porters - They make 80-120K a year, and handle you bag for 30 seconds. I don't tip extra, their union takes care of them.

2. Room service - Like pizza delivery, it is customary to tip $1-$2 for service.

3. Bartenders. - They already get a tip. Tipping 40-50% is just plain silly, but they love it. No extra tips from me.

4. Tour operators. Well, that's a tricky one, but usually $5-$10 seems good per person, depending on what they actually do.

5. Taxi - depends on a lot of factors, like, did he just charge me $20 for a 2 mile trip, or was it cheaper. If I think it is overpriced, than no, but if it reasonable, and the driver was friendly and helpful etc, than yes.

6. People on the ship, that get your tips. For starters, the above and beyond is very seldom achieved. When I started cruises, I was told the expected tip, and that's what I brought. Now it seems all any talks about is how much they tip. Honestly, if it is just the expected service, than maybe I will give some extra, but seldom, tip like others brag about.
