Door signs

On the Disney Cruise, people were pretty big into posting door signs indicating what number cruise they were on and who they all brought on the cruise. It was super decorated and stuff. The only reason I would think to put something like that up (me who is completely artistically-challenged) is so that I could spot my stateroom. Do people on Regent put door signs up or is that considered tacky on this cruise line?

No door signs on Regent. Regent is nothing like Disney (thankfully IMO). A girl who works for me just got back from a Disney Cruise with her family. While it might be ok if you have young children, the things she described made me happy I don’t have small children. Don’t need or want water slides, hoards of kids, characters talking to me, basketball courts, crowds everywhere. And the ironic thing is that they paid more than I would have for the same number of nights on Regent.

I guess it was a dumb question. I was hesitant to ask this group, and perhaps I should’ve erred on the side of caution. I’ve actually read an article that said if you want to enjoy your cruise and not second-guess it, don’t get sucked into Cruise Critic. No offense to anyone, but even looking at the Regent reviews on here can be depressing.

We had two children for the two DCLs, and unfortunately have not taken one with our youngest yet. All 3 kids are spaced very far apart. I would love to go once more with the two youngest (the oldest is 21). If you’ve never been on DCL, then you cannot imagine how all out they go to make your experience spectacular. The service is excellent, the ships are well-designed, the children’s programs are superb (fireworks!), the dining areas are very innovative, and the entertainment is Broadway-caliber. We’re taking this Regent cruise sans children since we’re focusing on the destination (which the kids wouldn’t get much out of). If Disney came out with an adult-only cruise ship, we might have considered it. Plus, my husband is like a kid half the time anyway. :)

There are no dumb questions. When going on a different cruise line it brings up many questions.

We sailed on Disney many years ago and loved it but Regent is different. It is much more laid back. It is a shame that you were warned off of Cruise Critic because there is a lot of great information on this board.

It is interesting that most reviews are from people that we have not seen on the review board and it shows. IMO doing research before a cruise is so important. It sets realistic expectations for your cruise. Some things that I read in the review section indicate that they did not know what to expect on Regent cruise.

On the Regent board you learn things such as finding a luxury cruise travel agent that regularly books Regent cruises so that you can receive a percentage back on your cruise, the best way to book excursions, etc.

I hope that you take advantage of the Regent board.

Thank you so much Travelcat! You have no idea how much your post has meant to me and has lifted my spirits. I was starting to think we made a huge mistake in booking Regent as maybe we were too middle class and wouldn’t belong. I like how you say it’s more laid back. We just want to relax on this cruise. You have actually regained my hope to continue reading these boards. I was about to delete the app. So, I’ll continue reading so that I may learn what not to do and what is ok to do, to avoid committing any major faux pas. Thank you again Travelcat! :)

Snuggarelli -

We are curious as to what about the ship (aside from itinerary) drew you to choose Regent?

Thanks for the question, Silver Sweethearts- we saw on the US News and World Report that Regent is rated highly for best cruises for couples and best cruises for the Mediterranean. Plus, it is truly all-inclusive which we thought was pretty neat. So we thought we’d give it a shot. We really wanted a romantic cruise just for the two of us, and we are hoping that this cruise will help us reconnect as we explore Europe (we plan to spend a couple days after the debarkation in Paris). Please let me know if this answers your question?

Yes, you do have to be careful when reading reviews and posts on CruiseCritic.

It is useful to remember that, as with all social media, the information supplied by posters falls into a number of categories:

  • factual based on direct personal experience
  • opinion
  • hearsay
  • fake news

Sometimes it can be difficult to differentiate as some posters present their opinions as being widely held, try to push their personal agenda or angst onto others, or simply make mistakes in the information they post.

However, you will generally find some good advice and information here on the Regent Board; plus I would recommend that you study the useful FAQs to be found on the Regent website.

As regards your original question about door decorations, I suggest you have a read of this previous thread, where you will find some very diverse opinions presented:

https://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2602266

In our experience door decoration on Regent usually only occurs during Holiday cruises over Xmas & New Year.

Welcome to Regent. Have a great time both planning and ultimately enjoying your cruise :)

I thought I read about door decorating contests during each segment of the World Cruise. Pictures were posted in the blog.

I followed the World Cruise Blog and it was truly fantastic. Yes, there were a few times on the cruise that they had a "door decorating" contest. Then everyone would judge their favorite door and a winner was announced (at least that's how I remember the blog). So you are correct.

We were on the unofficial pre-segment of the World Cruise in 2009 with, as I recall, about 100 of the pax who would be starting the World Cruise after we got to Los Angeles. There were quite a few past World Cruise plaques (from Regent) on many of their doors. I recall one door which had 7 plaques! This was the only time in our many Regent cruises where we saw this kind of door embellishment. I thought it was fine. World Cruises (and their segments) operate by a bit different set of rules. In our rather humble G suite, we were across the hall from a couple who had done many world cruises and, before we sailed from Fort Lauderdale, they had some personal furniture delivered...a wardrobe to supplement the closet space.

As an aside: I totally understood why there were quite a few world cruisers on this pre-segment. If we ever do a world cruise, we darn sure are going to start and end in the same port...otherwise you aren't really sailing around the world!

Snuggarelli, Please don't be concerned about "fitting in" on Regent. I had the same concerns when we first cruised with them, and my fears were totally unfounded. I am a retired teacher and my husband was a welder all of his working career. We took our first Regent cruise when I retired, and we enjoyed every minute. Will you find some pretentious people? Of course, but you will see them on any cruise line. The vast majority won't know or care if you're wearing Gucci or JC Penney. ;)Relax, enjoy, and don't worry about anything.

Snugarelli,

I'm a Disney Cruiser too! Been on 2 Disney Cruises and 2 Regent cruises, with my 3rd Regent cruised booked in November, and my 3rd Disney Cruise booked in April!

Obviously, I feel comfortable on both lines. Where I book depends on who I am travelling with.

That said, I used a magnet on the door on my last Disney Cruise so my 4 year old grandson would recognize our door and he could open it with his key card. One of his favorite parts of the cruise!

Never had problems finding my stateroom on Regent. Ships are so much smaller, you don't have the endless hallway of doors.

Really love sailing with Regent. Service is over the top, and all inclusive! Smaller ships are really nice, because you get to know people during the cruise. Have had many interesting dinners with fellow travelers.

Hope this helps.

Martha

This was done on an escorted cruise I was on in 2005 on (then) Radisson's Paul Gauguin. Plasticized signs for all of us. I thought it was not tacky, but, uh, collegian perhaps is the word? Smacked of the name tags that certain tour groups got their participants to wear--not me, not now, not ever.

We still have our sign. :)

While generally there are no door decorations, during the holidays some passengers really go all out with decorating their door and some are really quite clever and artistic - esp from passengers who live outside of the United States and wish to share their traditions.

I have also seen magnets or notices announcing special celebrations

The nice thing about Regent - you can really do your own thing and whatever makes you comfortable (other than wearing jeans after 6:00pm) and you will not be made to feel out of place.

gnomie :)

Flossie - thanks for your reply. Thank you for your advice and link. That was some thread. I read through it all. I did do a search first, but nothing came up for "door signs." If the thread you pointed out here came up, I wouldn't have had to posted. Oh well. Thank you for sharing that link. It was extremely helpful.

Thank you Hotroot! I don't see a thread link, so I wasn't sure if you were referring to another comment here.

Papaflamingo - Thank you!

Portolan - Thank you for your reply. LOL - funny story... When we were picking our cabin for this trip, I made sure we weren't across from any upper level cabins. I knew I would be trying to take a peek any time that door was opened just out of pure curiosity. I know that is so rude, but I'm as bad as my cat!

Thank you Sheltiluv - That's great to know. Where we live, my sister says there are way too many snooty people. I don't socialize nor get out much, so I'm not too impacted. On a small ship though, I think you can't help but be impacted. So, I'm glad it's not like that on Regent.

Marq - Yes, I was thinking of just putting up a simple plaque with our name or something on it. Or maybe just two small magnets of the USMC and USCG logos. Just little indicators for our room. But, if people don't do it, we'll be fine. That's funny you kept your sign. We keep all of our travel mementos too in a box to eventually be put into some sort of scrapbook.

Alaska_bound - that's great to know that a fellow-DCLer loved Regent. It definitely ups the comfort level for us. Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We are also thinking about maybe doing a DCL cruise in the 2020 or 2021. We usually do Hawaii every May with the kids. We haven't done any theme parks with the youngest yet because I hear the parks have just gotten too crowded these days. DCL is nice because there are limits to how many people can be on board. 2019 plans (Hawaii and our Regent cruise) are set, and I think I have to visit my grandmother in 2020 in Japan. So, if you go to DCL in 2021, maybe I'll see you there!

Thank you for your input Wendy the Wanderer.

Got2cruise - Good to know.

gnome - thank you for your advice re: the holidays and special celebrations. I really just wanted it for finding my stateroom, and I don't think there are any holidays during out time onboard. Sounds like real fun when they do have those contests. And thank you re: seconding Sheltiluv's comment regarding fitting in.

-------------------------------------------

Thank you again to everyone who replied with your honest opinions and advice regarding this topic.

Is there a way to close the topic since I think everything is pretty much covered?

A little late to this party, but do whatever makes you happy. You have spent handsomely on your cruise and have earned the right to have a good time. As stated by others, it is rare to see decorated doors on Regent cruises, but that does not mean that you shouldn't decorate yours. We have been on several Regents cruises and generally find that 99.9% of the passengers could not care less about comparing bank accounts, just be yourself and have a wonderful cruise!

Have to disagree with you a bit -- you are as good as your cat;p. If you were on our cruise we'd welcome you into upper level suite - we could talk about our kitties and how great it is to live in Washington!
