The Fleet Report and Daily for Thursday October 20th, 2022

With so many Dailyites affected by severe storms or fires, I thought I'd post an article about provisioning your pantry for such emergencies:

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/how-to-stock-pantry-for-emergency-hurricane_l_634ec33de4b0b7f89f5b173e.

This is probably common knowledge in the most vulnerable areas. When I lived in Los Angeles I was always prepared for 3 or 4 days, as is recommended in case of an earthquake, and I took care to use everything after a few months and restock. Where I live now, prolonged electrical outage isn't as likely, but I have a propane stove and a way to charge my phone (but not run appliances -- it's the portable jump-starter for the car). What I most need to stock up for is heavy snow, since ordinarily I don't have a lot of food in the house.

Checking in on Thursday.  I called out sick today.  I got up to get DH to his dr's appointment, and we got there on time, but I woke up with a scratchy throat, a head ache, and my left eye has been twitching non stop for days.  After his appointment we went for breakfast, which was wonderful, and then I got  so lethargic I thought i would just nap the afternoon away.  Which I did.  It was wonderful, and I'm not going to feel guilty about being off one day, if by doing so, I wont feel bad for the next few days.

Thank you all for the recipes, the pictures, the food porn and all the joy you bring to others today and every day.  I too am tired of all the political commercials on tv.  I think we should just buy tickets to an arena and watch the candidates have a mud sling.  Then let them dry with the mud on them, and send them back out naked and covered in mud, and see how they fare in the real world.

The B52 looked really good, a strong temptation...but I will not break down.  What I would have done, was ask for a tiny straw, and then sip from the levels....mix and match so to speak.  I am grateful for my sobriety, and will replace that drink for a coffee ice-cream smothered in hot fudge....

I am also not working the night shift today, my first time to watch nightly news in over 6 months.  DH lost his ballet campaign last week, he is now working a campaign for 5th AVE theatre in Seattle.

We are heading out in two weeks to see the MIL.  My BIL called this week to find out when we were coming, his mom had told him we were coming, but couldn't remember when.  The two brothers chatted awhile on the phone yesterday and when I came in the house, I asked DH  what his brother thought about how their mom was doing.  He said, she has no memory of anything at all.  I've noticed that the weekly phone calls between mother and son are getting shorter and shorter, and she tires out very easily.

Hi everyone,

I am doing a quick check-in just to let you all know that we are alive and well.

We attempted to check in to our alternative living arrangements on Tuesday only to find out that we had to climb three flights of stairs to get to the apartment.  This was not going to work and was not noted on the description on the website.

For the past two days we have been trying to get in touch with the owners and the insurance company to make alternate arrangements.

Airbnb was not cooperative at first but finally gave in and refunded our money after the owner agreed.

We have now found alternate living arrangements in a builiding with an elevator in a gated community.  It is a two-bedroom, two bath  apartment and we have it until the end of February.

Hopefully we won’t need it that long.

it is very comfortable.  We will move in tomorrow.

We were very concerned that we would not have a place to hang our hats.

It has been a very tiring and frustrating time since we got home from Barbados.

i will post more when we get settled.

Thank you for your prayers and concern.

God Bless,

Terri

Terri, what a disaster with the temporary apartment.  I'm sorry it took so much work to get some answers but happy to hear you've arranged a new place.  I, too, hope you won't need the newest apartment until February but best to be prepared.  Good luck!

Annie, sorry you are under the weather today.  With the exhaustion, throat and headache perhaps you should take a test and rule out Covid.  Meanwhile, get as much sleep as you can.  Keep us updated on your condition.  Sorry to hear about your MIL but sounds like a visit is a good idea.

Thank you for the Thursday report, Rich.  Three great culinary days to celebrate, today.  If I were Marx, I think I would rather have a good friend than a best friend.  Rich, I believe Rotterdam is actually going to Manhattan rather than Cape Liberty.  There's a Celebrity ship at Liberty that day and the New York terminal guide shows Rotterdam in Manhattan rather than Brooklyn,  I've never been to Taiwan (scheduled there on Amsterdam in 2017 but cancelled for political reasons) and I have no idea what the meal is.  My alternative is Fruit  Cup au Naturel, the turf from Surf and Turf, and Cherry Crumble Tart, as served on MS Amsterdam October 20, 2017.

RIP StLouisCruiser friend Beverly 10/18/22
Sudden death for cunnorl friend
HAL4NOW testing positive on Koningsdam
Cruisin single’s step son with double cancer
Vict0rian’s cousin in final stages of ALS
Marshhawk’s friend Sheri
Quaartzite Cruiser DH with post surgery complications

HAL Sailer DH visiting his sister
4 days for Oceansaway17 (Equinox 10/24 to 11/3)

Roy

hey Roy thanks for mentioning me.

a well-known YouTuber is on the Rotterdam TA and it looks like tomorrow will be some rough seas for him.  Name is Don FV.  It is cool to be the 150yr anniversary of first crossing.

BTW, the Amsterdam was my first HAL ship in 2010 up in Seattle.  I loved all the places in the back end of the ship one could stand and look at the water.

Oh and check out the new RCI Icon of the Seas.  wow lots of changes and some good and some not so good.  So much pastel and loud colors.

Good afternoon. Thanks for the Fleet Report/Daily.

Brrrrr. It was about 33F this AM. We're up to a balmy 45F now and it's sunny, but there's a wind c

The fall color is outstanding this year. This is a picture from this morning by a local photographer, Dave DiCello.

@Cruzin Terri I'm glad you made it home safely. Oh my on that first apartment with all those stairs! I'm glad you finally got something much more suitable.

@marshhawk I hope you feel better. I've developed a scratchy throat this afternoon and have a bit of a headache (but had to turn my glasses in to get the new ones, so I think my eyes are strained). I just did an at home antigen test which was negative. I may repeat in the AM since I have a doctor's appointment, and may postpone my flu and bivalent vaccines tomorrow.

I caught up reading yesterday...I have been sounding rather morose.  Sorry.  Sometimes my happy bubble just bursts, and I have to clean up all the soapy stuff.

@Quartzsite Cruiser I haven't caught up with today, but I hope that things are going better, and that your DD and DSIL showed up to help you out.  Make the rest of the weekend a bit easier for you.  And thank you so much for your kind comment regarding my life evaluation.  I could just hug you!

@ottahand7 I hope that your brother is doing better with that knee.  I would be very worried if something started bleeding more than a week after surgery.

More extremely early doctors appointments in the morning, but I stopped at Sara Donuts today, so I've got breakfast covered.

Did anyone respond to my questions about dinner reservations?  BFF said when he tried to make reservations for Tamarind he was told (internet) nothing was available.  Are we too early to make reservations for a May cruise?  Or could they already be full?

Thanks.

Annie, I think it’s too early to make reservations. I say check again every few weeks. You’ll know it’s loaded into the system when you have different time options and it accepts your reservation. Don’t worry too much about missing one. Reservations have been very open on all of our recent sailings.

The acupuncturist thought that I needed treatment today more for stress than for my foot, and proceeded accordingly. It seems to have helped.

A lot of the stress is from uproar at work, about things that I can't change (really, no one can). There's also some healthier stress from things that I can deal with and I'm making progress on them, just not as quickly as is needed.

If I go to Canyonlands, it can't be until the last week in April. Until July I can never travel during the middle of the month, and Passover is in April. We may also hold a large public event at the end of April or beginning of May, which could delay it further, or derail it altogether. That uncertainty is not helping the stress and the volunteer leadership is not hurrying to resolve the question.

Good evening.  Evidently the CC gremlins struck after I thought this had posted earlier.  I hit submit reply and it said saving.  When I came back a little while ago, it wasn't  anywhere.  Finally, it popped up in the quote box.  So I'll post it now with what I intended to write now.

Good morning from central Texas where it will be 85F thIs afternoon.  Our warm weather is returning until Monday.

Just having DD and DSIL here has been a great relief, and we both slept better last night just knowing we have help.  With the muscle relaxer out of his system, DH is moving a little better, but still needs help moving over in bed.  That is much easier with DSIL helping.  I think I'll not be as stressed between now and Monday when the second surgery happens, and I can handle the routine things.

DSIL brought two beautiful steaks, aspargus and salad to fix for dinner.  Now, that's real help. 👏

A great big thank you to everyone for their good wishes and support.  I know if I tried to list everyone, I'd miss one or two, so I'll just say thank you all.  I don’t want to hurt anyones feelings if they were left out.

We'll celebrate all chefs and all wait staff not only those in the UK.  I'm not going to celebrate brandied fruit.

I was never a fan of Grocho Marx, but I laughed at today’s quote.

We'll pass on the meal, which was probably one of the dishes at lunch on our tour in Manila.  I don't remember if I tried it.  We'll also pass on the drink and the wine.

We have been to Keelung and Taipei, but not today's port.

@MISTER 67  Sounds like another great day on the golf course.  Glad you're getting a new a/c.  The new ones are so much more efficient.

@aliaschief  Thanks for the pictures of the Paul Bocus market.  The food looks good.  It reminds me of the indoor market in Sete with all the wonderful food and the vast variety.

@Overhead Fred  Safe travels today and tomorrow.

@kazu  Jacqui, when I got my booster and flu shot, the pharmacist told me they do one in each are, so if there is a reaction they can tell which shot caused it.

@durangoscots  Susan, I'm glad you arre enjoying the crabs and fried oysters.  We can't get good fried oysters in the inland part of Texas.  Safe travels home Saturday, and I hope you beat the bad weather home.

@luvteaching  Karen, I'm  sorry your DH fell and broke a bone in his foot, and I hope the infection has cleared up.  It's good he has a good altitude and is getting the help he needs

@Cruzin Terri   Terri,  I'm sorry the apartment didn't work out, but glad you have a nice place.  I hope you don't have to stay until February.

@marshhawk  Annie, i hope you feel better by tomorrow.  I hope your visit with DMIL turns out well.  I'm sorry she is having memory problems.  I consider myself hugged and hugs back to you.

DH got up for dinner tonight which was excellent.  DSIL cooked the steaks and they were very good.  We have some steak left over for tomorrow. I fixed the aspargus in the air fryer, and DSIL made a wilted baby spinach salad with the bacon and mushrooms I'd prepped for the pizza I never got around  making.

We may just graze tomorrow with the leftover steak and meatloaf, aspargus and spinach.  DD and DSIL both had to work today and have to work tomorrow, so grazing sounds good.

While they work, I try to stay off the internet as much as possible.  Right now, I'm using my phone as a hotspot since DD is on a business call with someone some where in the world.

Good evening,

Thanks for all the good thoughts everyone! They are much appreciated. I spent the afternoon at the care facility with DH and he was bright and cheery today. I'm going to have to be his advocate that's for sure. I got there before noon and DH informed me that he didn't have his bottom denture. WHen the CNA came in she said she noticed it was gone this morning. Now, if it was gone, wouldn't you look? Anyway, we looked and it was on the floor under the bed! How it got there will remain a mystery. I also am trying to get a bed rail for him but there's a process. Don't get me wrong - the staff are very friendly and when I ask I get answers but I sometimes think I shouldn't have to ask.

This evening our smoke had dissipated quite a bit and rain is supposed to come tomorrow so we'll see what happens.

Thank you!!!!

Karen
