Rumor or not?

Obviously, cruise lines are finding it to be an issue, or they would not be implementing these surcharges. We've been on many cruises where the waitstaff has said its an issue. And now, post covid, cruise lines are experiencing staffing issues with the backlog in immigration paperwork to get more staff on the ships. People are complaining about a $5 surcharge. If you dont like it, dont eat more than two. If you're still mad, look at the reason why.

LOL, this is about Royal, is it not!  I couldn't care less about what Rustbucket Cruise Lines is doing or not doing.  As of right now, the $5.00 - $8.00 surcharge on Royal for extra lobster (or is it crab, I can't keep up) is just a rumor.  And I'm so glad that the wait staff has come to you to complain about the excessive eating of lobster (or is it crab, I can't keep up) and/or you though of it to ask about it.

But, go ahead and have the last word, I really don't care, I've had my fun.  I'm out!

Agree! We just got off of Carnival in July and the food selection outstanding and the quality very, very good. And it was on an older, smaller ship. Im actually a little disappointed in our options on the Explorer and considering some of the specialty dining options. But again, I have the choice to pay or not.

I agree as well.  I find Carnival's food to be better than Royal's.

But really, these people that try to set the record for how many lobsters they can eat are ridiculous. DO you really need more than 2 plus the appetizers, sides and dessert? Especially on the heals of cancellation of Alaskan crab season due to overfishing. If you can find them it will be expensive.

I'm struggling to understand how you're linking lobsters to Alaska crabs.  Should they stop serving all seafood because there's a crab shortage in AK?

"One year" wasnt during a time of supply chain issue and record inflation. Also, depending on where you live, limes were plentiful and cheap. I had a lime tree in my back yard. None of us have a deep, cold body of water at our house

The lobsters served on board are warm water rock/spiny lobsters.  I'm from the Florida Keys.  At any given time, I could pull about a dozen of them out of my seawall.

It's amazing how nice and quiet the Windjammer is in the evening. We've gone from MDR to WJ for desserts or a snack after having dinner, and it's definitely less stressful feeling in there!

We have not eaten MDR for our last 5-6 cruises. WJ is much easier with excellent choices. The pasta bar is a favorite.

Upcharges?? I think 2 meals is more than enough for everyone.

My comment wasn't specific to MDR meal upcharges.  It's the "nickel and dime" creep that is occurring.

Soon to come ... $10 cover charge for MDR.  One plate limit at WJ.  $5 for preferred theater seats.  No, this is just hypothetical.

7+% inflation.  Prices will go up.  The question is, would you rather pay higher cruise fares or let those people who eat 3+ meals pay a bit more?

There are lines where EVERYTHING is included, including excursions, even if you don't take them.  Of course the fares are higher.

They can eat what they want, but just pay extra if you are going to eat 3x or more what a normal portion in the MDR. Maybe, rather than appear pigish, stop at the WJ for anything you like after dinner.

Im one of those evil people that eat 3 meals plus app (no dessert) for dinner... I eat OMAD (one meal a day)  so breakfast lunch and dinner at one shot. I request 3 meats and steamed veggies.. boring diet but it works for my health....  Hope this helps see another side..

Because of all the people who come with Ziplock's in their purses.

So about 5 or more years ago, having a quick lunch at the upscale, expensive buffet at a local casino, I spot an elderly couple walking to their table with plates full from the buffet.  The wife had this INCREDIBLE AMOUNT of food on her plate the my mind couldn't reconcile with her frail petite stature.  Stunned, I watched her sit her plate down at a table close to mine and facing me.  Next she pulled out a gallon sized ziplock back and started to fill it up.  Her actions and manner where "matter of fact" and not at all discrete.  The voice from one shoulder shouted:  "Say something to them!"  But the other voice won out by telling me "they could be living on a limited budget and this is part of their plan to make ends meet."  Yet I was shocked.

But nothing like the shock I got watching RCI passengers bagging up mozzarella sticks and chicken sandwiches from Coco Cay to take home!  Here's the video where they mention what they're going to do in the first few minutes of the video, and then it's about 10:00 that they pack the food up and groan about how good they will be in the air fryer at home  (in their trailer?)

So while I haven't seen zip lock bags in MDR, I wouldn't blink an eye.

I read on another site that Royal will start charging $8 per additional dinner plate in the main dining room for dinner beginning in February.   Has anyone else heard this?  What are your thoughts?  Hopefully, it's not true.

I hope it is a rumor.  It is not uncommon for our table to receive some "speciality of home" to share  in addition to the entrees ordered.  Also pretty common for someone to order a pasta dish for the table to share.  But I guess what might bother me most is that the cruise line is hard pressed to the point they need to do this.

I heard this rumor on the Celebrity web site.

Usually, I do not care what other people do as long as it does not affect me. However, I have to say, that this is disgusting. I have never thought, nor would I want, to bring food back from a cruise. I'm not sure what is worse.. them actually doing this, or the fact that they filmed/posted/bragged about it knowing no one would care.

It was also a really boring video, yet gets loads of positive comments and is making them money to fund their trips! I don’t get it…..
