And that’s why we get balconies

So there we were, having a birthday breakfast on our balcony when I heard a sudden splash, very different from the waves.

We look out over the sea to see what it was, and see a group of dolphins dancing along side the ship!!  They were not following us, just jumping out of the waves in different directions. Had we not been out there, we would have totally missed it.

Happy birthday, indeed.

I've seen them many times sailing out of Galveston.  There seems to be a pod of dolphins that "escort" ships out to sea by jumping and playing in front of the bow of the ship as it leaves port.  It's almost like a choreographed dance and really fun to watch.  (DH says they are pilot dolphins and their "porpoise" is to help captains  safely steer ships out of Galveston port.)

We have also seen dolphins in the channel at Port Canaveral many times.

I've spent hours out there looking with binoculars, with no luck, only in port do we ever see them (yep in Galveston), Oh maybe one other time we saw some out in the gulf but years ago!  You lucky dog!  Of course we see them many times in Alaska. I even caught a whale breaching on the Gopro.  Lots of jumping porpoi up there as well, but bottle nose are hard to see except at port.

I love seeing dolphins or any wildlife. Happy for you, what a nice birthday gift! In October we were on a sunset catamaran cruise in Tahiti for my birthday, and was so fortunate to have a whale and her calf surface next to us. They were joined by another adult whale and for the next 15 minutes we got to see the little one practice breaching out of the water.

And we like being in our OV cabin, closer to the water than a balcony, and seeing wonderful sights like that!

And the folks in the inside cabins or still asleep can catch the sights on the internet and feel like they were right there beside you. Because somebody's taping them and posting it! (Or should I say, taping a video selfie of themselves gawking at the dolphins.)

This is the 21st century, reality is ...  what is posted on the internet. 😁😉

I should have known that the Debbie downers of CC would try to lessen my mood. Oh, well, thanks to confirm why we keep to ourselves.

BTW, we are in the Atlantic east of North Carolina. Shockingly cool to see in a surprise spot.

Because seeing someone else’s picture is exactly like seeing them in person.

I've had OV cabins where so much salt was caked onto the window that I could barely see the ocean nevermind a dolphin.

I think you misinterpreted my post. That's OK, I probably should have added  a 🙄 after "This is the 21st century, reality is ...  what is posted on the internet. 😁😉"

Have a great birthday.

We have always had a balcony on cruise vacations.

It is so relaxing  to sit and watch the sea go by. Sighting dolphins or whales would be an added bonus !

It is also pleasant to sit outside at night, listening  to the sea, looking up at the stars or looking across the expanse to see the lights of another ship or distant land.

You nailed it. I would just add in while sipping on the drink of choice.🙂
