Dear Avril.

 

Of course you are worried - it's a serious condition as you know. The shock of the diagnosis has probably made you a bit wobbly too. I'm sending a massive bear hug for comfort.

 

Going forward the thing to focus on is what treatment Frank will get to support his heart. I have just read the posts from Kalos and Josy which I hope explain, help, and reassure. The main thing is that you have a firm diagnosis so hopefully over the next couple of days treatment options will be discussed.

Avril I’m sorry to hear about the news of Franks heart failure, and the information on here from others that have gone through this is uplifting, I know you’re really worried and I would be if it was my husband , let’s hope over the next few days he starts his treatment and recovery and will be home with you soon 😘

Not a good start to the new year for us unfortunately. Some of you may remember I had DCIS (early breast cancer) last year and I had my first follow up mammogram in Dec, they rang me last week, “chalky” deposits found so had to have a further more magnified mammogram yesterday, just waiting results now.

 

Our dog was diagnosed with an ulcer in her eye over Xmas, she has been having antibiotics six times a day plus her own blood serum into her eye. Saw vet again last night, it has got worse, appt at 9.15 to see eye specialist in Penrith. She either needs surgery to make a new eye flap (if they can)to try save her vision or she will have to have her eye removed. So it’s an early start for me today as it’s over an hour to Penrith even with no hold ups on M6.

 

Hope all goes well for everyone with appointments, treatments etc

Your poor dog with the sore eye.  Fingers firmly crossed that the situation resolves, either by the ulcer healing or by the surgery.  I know a couple of “pirate dogs” who have normal, happy, pain-free, lives

Avril - I’m so glad kalos posted.  It’s a pity your doctor couldn’t spare you more time to give you a more detailed explanation of the situation and what might happen.  Perhaps you’ll hear more today.  Look after you

@Eddie99 the patient did have a good night thank you and is still asleep.  I have spoken to a real nurse (aka my sister)  last night and she is going to take care of changing his dressing for me if I take him round to her house, only 1.5 miles from us so we will walk round instead of our usual walk.

That’s good news for you josy and the walk in the fresh air will do you both good, I’m a bit like you about blood and stitches and hate anybody picking at cuts or scabs makes my tummy turn .

Today off to the doctors for a medical review, two appointments so maybe they want to start jabbing me for blood,so best drink some water to get those veins pumped up.

Avril - just to say that I am told that  'heart failure' covers a range of situations, from fairly mild to serious, and you should definitely get a full explanation of Frank's condition from the Doctors at the hospital, and your own GP should be able to help when he is home.  (I am not medical, but this is via my son in law, who is a Doctor, and has just discussed my very recently diagnosed atrial fibrillation and the treatment for it, which is necessary but very good).  I am told it will improve my tiredness and shortness of breath after not much activity, and I see a GP next week.  So do make sure you get more detail - it might be less serious  than you fear.  

 

We are all keeping our fingers crossed for you both.

A very wet day down here with torrential rain and colder than of late.

 

Avril, good to hear that Frank is on the road to recovery and his problem has been diagnosed, so treatment can begin. The worst thing is not knowing. Hopefully it won't be too much longer before he is home again. Remember to look after yourself and take care.

 

My day has go off to a good start. I've won £30 on last night's lottery, with a free ticket and bookings have opened up for dining on Azura, so have booked Epicurean for my birthday.

Avril, good news Frank has got a diagnosis and that appropriate treatment can begin.

 

Dog update - she had a corneal graft yesterday at the eye hospital in Penrith. She came home last night, 6 medications every two hours given 5 mins apart. Fortunately during the night we don’t have to do it. Check up next Weds in Penrith. We are very relieved and thankful to all the fantastic vets and nurses who helped her. Hubby was cringing at the bill but she is worth it 

 

It’s turning out to be a lovely sunny day here now, dog walk in order after lunch

It is a lovely sunny day but it us only 6°c. I have just been for a short post lunch walk.  DH decided that it was too cold for a second walk so stayed in doing a bit more on his joke Christmas present from my sister, it is a mechano type model steam train. 

The dog walkers are out in force this afternoon.  I saw one lady really struggling to control  her boxer dog, it probably just wanted to be friendly but I didn't risk slowing down or stopping.

Thank you Jane, we will just have to get on with it and do it for her which we will but it’s quite hard to be able to do anything as some meds have to be in the fridge. Loads of jobs to do in house though as workmen have been here all week

It’s been a much more pleasant day, no rain for starters, some sunny spells but quite chilly. 
 

We took down the Christmas Decorations inside the house, have left the lights up outside for a couple more days or until batteries run out.

 

Community page has been full of armchair flood experts saying what they would do to stop the flooding ranging from taking around 3m out of the river bed, clearly not thought of consequences of doing that to building a 2m wall along the edge of the river. Don’t you just love these armchair experts, not only are they experts on floods, but some of the same names are experts on repairing roads, bus services, bin collections, and multiple other things.

Such a pity that they've not used their talents to train to PhD level as Fluvial Hydrologists, Civil Engineers or Chartered River Engineers so that they could offer their professional expertise, experience and skills to local authorities, consultancies, public bodies and construction companies currently planning and building some of the biggest infrastructure projects in the country! 👷‍♂️👷‍♂️

Lovely day here, it was actually light this morning when I crawled out of my pit. Had a long walk this morning, around five miles which is the longest since my hip op and no adverse effects.

 

Hopefully Avril will have some good news about Frank's recovery and everyone is having a good day.

Peanut, that's good to hear about your dog and the bill will be worth it 😉 you like myself will probably do anything to help your dog they are a big part of our lives.

Thank you. Frank has never had any heart issues before and has always been told, after his doctor's medical reviews, that he has a strong steady heartbeat, which is why it came as such a shock. We were only told he had suffered a heart failure. he had a echo scan yesterday and is still waiting for the cameras. After that things should be a little clearer. Other than that he's still eating like a horse and is begining to settle more into the hospital enviroment. 

I'm sure all will be well for you LL. Our NHS medical staff are amazing and aren't given the credit that everyone, from domestics to consultants deserve. I wish you a speedy recovery. Take care. x

I am pleased to hear that Frank is settling into the hospital.  It is a good sign that he is eating plenty.  As you say our NHS staff are wonderful we are lucky that we have them.

I hope that they will get Frank sorted out quickly and back home to you.

Glad to hear Frank is in good spirit and you sound a little less worried.

Thank you Dawn.  I am not feeling ill at all, but have noticed recently getting very tired after not a lot of physical effort, with some shortness of breath - apparently a common symptom of the particular problem.  If I get put on to an anticoagulant, as is very likely, I am told that this should improve.  The beta blocker I am already on stopped the palpitations I was getting.  I had  prided myself on a healthy heart and lungs, so as you and Frank have found, it is an unpleasant surprise to discover you are not as good as you thought.  Modern treatments can seemingly help a great deal to avoid future problems, so I am going to rely on them to reduce the chance of anything serious happening.  I had not been very impressed with my GPs recently, but they are certainly giving me some priority at present.

 

Whatever we say about the NHS, I think generally they step up to the mark when something needs to be dealt with quickly, as I think you have also found, which is reassuring.
